Background:

Helen Davies would have been the the UK's first female Special Forces warfighter. She had the physical ability, the mental capacity, the guts, and the charm to pull it off. However, this would not be her destiny. As "the perfect package" the Ministry of Defense decided to elevate her status to that of Super-Soldier.

The Super-Soldier project had been in effect since the days of the early Cold War (1952). It hadn't been ready in time for World War II, and the early experiments had provided decent, though not spectacular, results. The British Super-Soldier program had not been as aggressive as the American program had been. The Americans had wanted a Super-Soldier on active deployment in WWII and had pushed very hard for it. They achieved those results, but at the cost of many soldier's lives. The British, on the other hand, were more cautious.

By the 2000s, the British SSP (Super-Solider Program) had proven to be effective and reliable. They'd only lost one soldier (they refused to call them "test subjects" as the American's did) and that was back in the 80s. With Helen sworn to the Official Secrets Act, she was given the choice to accept the treatments and become the UK's first female Super-Soldier.

What no one knew was that the serum used was accidentally altered by a sleep-deprived technician and that Helen had some dormant meta-genes. Since the SSP was about re-writing genetic code, unlocking the hidden potential of the human body, and boosting the physical and mental capacity to that of human perfection, mapping the Soldier's genome was one of the first steps in selection. The usual markers for meta-gene presence didn't show up on Helen's transcription. It was the combination of the altered serum, the radiation, and Helen's own meta-genes that produced such a spectacular result.

Needless to say, everyone involved was ecstatic. Seeing the outcome, the Home Secretary requested that Helen be given a code name, and elevated to national superheroine status.

When she worked with the Great Lakes Guardians, she met Brian Furguson, AKA Blacknight, and the two fell in love. After working on their relationship over long distance and a few years, Brian decided to leave the Guardians and emigrate to the UK, where the two were married.

Background: Lizzy Belle was a normal teenager. She liked to sing, she was good at school, and she loved a man. Not just any man, but the man: the Champion of Indianapolis--Omega. Omega was the protector of Indianapolis, a normal man who, while eschewing weapons, defeated armed men and even some super-villains. Little was publicly known about Omega at the time. He was a large man with a barrel chest, a fierce hand-to-hand combatant, and seemingly indefatigable.

On a school field trip, Lizzy happened to catch sight of Omega in a daring daylight fight with gunmen. She left her school group and sneaked off to watch her hero in action. The fight went well for Omega, as it usually did, but with his attention focused on his opponents, Lizzy managed to sneak up quite close. And on several other occasions Lizzy managed to get close to her idol. Omega had tipped to Lizzy's actions early on, but he wanted to know what this stealthy little girl was up to. He became impressed when she successfully managed to follow him across town.

When Omega finally approached Lizzy and asked her what she wanted from him, she impulsively said that she wanted to be just like him. He told her she'd have to join the Marines first, acquire a dozen years of combat experience and train every day. Lizzy told him that she wanted to do that now, and from the look in her eye, Omega realized that she was serious and determined. He thought there would be no harm in teaching this young girl some martial arts, so after school Lizzy began her tutelage under Omega's direction.

Lizzy gradually worked into the role of Omega Girl. One day she showed up dressed in her costume and Omega didn't say anything. She stopped a liquor store robbery by herself. Then one day, Omega responded to a bank robbery and Omega Girl made her public debut that day.

When she stopped living at home and moved in with Omega was another step in their relationship. The bond between Lizzy and Omega was an intense one. Omega was singularly focused on his role as a crime fighter. He had no interest or time for relationships, but Lizzy sparked something in Omega that was nurturing and fatherly--though he was a strict disciplinarian and not above teaching lessons with his fists or feet during sparring matches.

Over time, Omega and Omega Girl proved to be an effective duo. The press had a field day and floated rumors about their relationship (not necessarily sexual, but that he had brought his own daughter into a dangerous lifestyle). Omega Girl was a talented natural martial artist, and she had a run of several years without injury, which is an amazing feat for any fledgling hero.

After several run ins with Maelstrom and Gazelle, Omega and Omega Girl once again intended on foiling their plans. But this time, something had changed. Omega Girl had surprised Gazelle with some seriously good fighting, and Gazelle kind of lost it. She beat Lizzy within an inch of her life and publicly unmasked her. It was captured on video by some bystanders and went viral. The beat down wasn't the amazing (and horrible) thing about the video--it was the release of white hot energy from Lizzy. The fight left both women in the hospital for weeks.

After recovering, Lizzy discovered that she was a mutant with light controlling powers and it was the trauma of the physical confrontation with Gazelle that caused her mutation to manifest, thereby saving her life.

With Lizzy's identity publicly known, she felt she was a liability to Omega and dissolved their partnership. Having lived under Omega's guidance for so long, she changed her name to Glory to honor the true spirit of the patriotism that he'd taught her.

Background: Annika and her family were on a vacation and camping trip in Joshua Tree when Annika began hearing voices. She tried to keep it to herself, but the voices were distracting and it soon became clear that something was wrong. Annika's parents decided to head back into the city to have her seek treatment. Before they left the National Park, Annika clutched at her head and screamed for her father to stop the car. She bolted from the car and fled into the desert. For days they searched for her, but couldn't find her.

Annika had been called to an alien artifact: the sole remaining piece of a battlesuit, the gauntlet. It was the power in the alien glove that had been calling to her in every conceivable language that now pulled her toward it buried in the desert. Once she had touched it, and then placed in on her own hand, the whole story was revealed to her. The pilot of the battlesuit had been in pursuit of a heinous interstellar terrorist, but had been injured and was drifting toward Earth's atmosphere with his suit's protective systems compromised. The pilot died upon reentry, but the battlesuit utilized a synthetic DNA as part of its makeup that it now transferred to Annika. She would be able to camouflage the gauntlet but it was now a part of her as well as the power it possessed. Over the course of several weeks, the alien device rewrote Annika's DNA.

Once she'd been cleared medically and psychiatrically, she took the time to her master her new powers and began appearing on the local scene as Ironhand.

Background: Lilacs-in-Spring Hutchens ("Lilac" for short) was born in Gaia's Community, in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. Gaia's Community is an intentional community--a modern term for ecovillage or commune. Lilac grew up raised by an extended family, inculcated with a sense of responsibility toward others and the environment. At the age of eight, she began to display her mental abilities. These were met with openness and tolerance, and she was instructed in how to responsibily use her powers.

In high school, Lilac came out as lesbian, and it was at this time that she decided that she wished to become a diplomat so that she could sow tolerance and understanding between people and nations. Knowing her own mind, she had little interest in higher education--what she wanted to do in the world could be done with her abilities.

It was during a hostage situation at the UN that Lilac first used her powers to overwhelm another's mind. With this event, Lilac's activities came to the attention of Glory of the Great Lake Guardians. Glory approached Lilac for membership and initially Lilac turned her down. She wouldn't mind being a consultant, but she didn't feel prepared to join a team as a full-time member. Lilac was eventually worn down by Glory and joined the team.

Background: William Grinstead, Sr. was a beat cop in Chicago for thirty-five years. He saw every side of humanity, and the stories he told his son inspired the young man to follow in his father's footsteps. William Grinstead, Jr. was a chip off the old block and all the old timers took the young man under their collective wing.

Junior was a good cop and he did things by the book. Until he began to see that justice wasn't being done by cops on the take, a broken criminal justice system, and even superheroes unwilling to defend the weak and powerless down on the mean streets.

Junior began to take matters into his own hands and intervene on his own, using extra-legal methods. For some time he operated this way, but the stress was becoming too much. It was too hard to do what he felt he had to do and keep it from his fellow cops--who he often didn't know if they'd turn on him because they were on the take or if they were on the up-and-up.

Junior quit the police and began to operate in a costumed identity and after several months he and Glory crossed paths. They instantly understood one another and Glory offered membership to Revenant in the Great Lake Guardians. This was the best of both worlds.

Background: Byron Lord was a scientific prodigy who was an inventor from a young age. Always fascinated by the military but not gifted with physical prowess, Byron was determined to create a scientific advantage that would level the field. In college, he learned of a military bid for an exoskeleton that would be the prototype for the "soldier of tomorrow." Byron began work on his own model to the exclusion of all else. After several days of nonstop work with little sleep, Byron began to make mistakes. And one of them nearly cost him his life. He was electrocuted and woke up several hours later with new found abilities: the physical enhancements he'd been working toward--but instead of built into the suit, they were now innate. Plus something extra: an insect-like ability to climb (attributable to the electricity? he had to wonder).

Byron continued his work, but instead of working on a project for the military, he did so for himself as Shutterbug!

Background: Phil was always an intimidating man. A big man. But he wasn't your typical brute; he was smart, but he had no drive--no purpose. He bummed around here and there, tried all kinds of odd jobs, and was amounting to not much at all. He managed to keep his spirits up by imagining himself a great hero and rescuing damsels in distress. Saving the city from desperate criminals. And still he amounted to not much.

Then one day, it all fell in his lap. The bank robbery. The shoot-out. The damsel in distress. Frankly, he was tired of amounting to not much and he decided to grab the bull by the horns. He attacked one of the bank robbers and was promptly shot for his trouble. But it was enough to let the damsel get away. So there's that....

Phil woke up in the hospital. He was in a lot of pain. The drugs weren't doing much to alleviate the pain and the doctors didn't know what to do for him, short of inducing a coma. After two days of bone breaking pain, the doctors were about to proceed with the medical coma, when a visitor appeared. It was the damsel who had managed to flee when Phil intervened. She'd lied and told the staff that she was Phil's sister. She had to see him and thank him before they put him under. For a moment, Phil felt no pain. She was beautiful and he knew that he loved her. Just like that. She saw something in his eyes and knew the same thing. The doctors put him under, and yet after a week's full of tests could find nothing wrong with him physically that should be producing those levels of pain. He'd put on weight, which they couldn't account for and one of the nurse's said he'd grown several inches, but that was chalked up to clerical error.

After that initial week of coma, Phil was brought back up to consciousness. The doctor's were convinced the pain was psychosomatic. But when Phil awoke, he didn't complain about pain and only asked about the female visitor. She'd left a phone number.

Phil was released from the hospital as he had all but recovered from the bullet wound. No one could explain this, and that was chalked up to metahuman abilities. Phil balked at this, but no one had any better explanation. Phil was overjoyed! Okay, maybe it was low grade superpowers, but hey, that was pretty cool!

Phil called the woman up and they began a relationship. They were soon married and Phil was the happiest man in the world. He still had to figure out what to do with his life, and he was sure it would involve his new found abilities. He waited for his chance and decided to try to stop another crime. This time it was a mugging and once again Phil was hurt for his trouble. This time a knife wound opened up his guts and he thought he was a goner. But not this time. This time, the wound healed almost instantly. And Phil grew taller! When he went home, his wife didn't know what to make of it and she didn't like it very much. It was dangerous and she was having a hard time dealing with his new height--he was nearly seven feet tall!

But Phil couldn't stop. Each time he was wounded, he began to change. And not just in height. But in weight and in form. His feet began to change into hooves and he noticed the beginnings of horns on his head. His wife was repulsed by this, and Phil was horror struck. The changes began to happen faster and faster, with no stimulus required. Each day he was a little bit more of a man-bull. And each day his wife grew further and further apart. One day she wasn't there any more.

By that time, he'd adopted a new identity as Taurus, and pretty much tried to keep himself occupied as a full-time hero so he wouldn't think about what he'd lost. He felt like he'd gained everything he'd ever wanted, but had paid too steep of a price for it.

Background: Keith Terry grew up in the shadow of the Mob on Chicago's southside. A bug guy, he was recruited early on for his strength and eagerness to please the made guys. Pug, as he came to be known, was happy in his role. He did favors for the locals and did as he was told by the bosses. He was liked by everyone.

In the alien invasion of 1999, Keith helped out like everyone else. When an alien fighter was brought down by Blackbird, Keith was first on the scene. The injured pilot produced a strange silvery weapon, but was in no shape to properly wield it. Keith took it away from him, and as soon as he touched it, it liquefied and seeped into his body through the pores of his skin.

Keith dropped to the ground, in agony! The alien metal was "fixing" his body, augmenting his strength and reinforcing his bones and musculature. After an intense few minutes, most of the pain was over, and Keith was a very different man. Soon the alien metal wept out of his body, and pooled on the ground next to him. Keith didn't know this, but it was awaiting his command. He remembered that the pilot had produced a weapon. And now that he thought about it had resembled a sword of some kind. How was he supposed to turn the pool of metal back into a sword? He didn't know a thing about swords; it was of little use to him.

Keith stood up and felt woozy. He also felt leaden, like he weighed far more than he had previously. But he also felt strong! He began to walk away from the pool of metal, but it followed him! He tried to scoop it up and it began to oscillate and change shape as he thought about different things. He soon realized it would pretty much become whatever he wanted it to. He didn't want a sword. But a chain, now that would be old school. He pictured a chain in his mind and the metal took the shape. He practiced swinging it and thought about hitting the crashed spaceship with it and it lengthened to do just that!

Over the years since that time, Keith left his employ in the mob (there was little they could do to stop him), and with his celebrity fighting for his neighborhood in the invasion, he earned the respect of the local citizens. Blackhawk (Glory's predecessor as leader) was impressed with his selflessness and offered him a slot in the Guardians.

Background: Harold ("Harry" only to his family) was born into wealth, with a very long dynasty of magickally influenced individuals. In one way or another, the Huffington family has wielded money, influence, and outright power for the betterment of Mankind for untold generations throughout the world.

When Harold was born, it was his destiny to wield the power arcane. He was tutored from an early age in the mastery of his abilities and as a youth not only protected his family, but the world from arcane, eldritch, and unearthly onslought. It was much to ask.

At seventeen, in preparation for his magickal sigil (his license to practice magicks without supervision), a trial was proposed by the Supreme Council that took Harold from this plane for two dozen years while only a month of time passed on earth. It was an arduous challenge; one that tested him physically, mentally, and of course, magickally. It was also one that required of him the decision to kill, so that when he returned he was no longer a naive young boy, but a man prone to a certain intensity and determination.

His parents, clearly not ones to coddle him, sent him out into the world to make his own way, to take up his mantle as Chosen Protector, and be ever vigilant to the corrupting influence of mystical might.

Harold is a professor at the University of Chicago and also a member of the Guardians, although not full-time. He is prone to becoming involved with his former female students--he does not influence them, nor will he become involved with current students. He has a loyal following of students (of both sexes) and while quite serious, injects self-deprecating humor into his seminars.

Background: Paddy Kelly was a third generation doctor. After completing his internship, he joined Doctors without Borders and headed to Afghanistan to help civilians injured during the war. Late one night during a call, Paddy was unable to save the daughter of a tribal elder from the damage she had received by errant shrapnel. In the man's grief, he cursed Paddy. Before he was able to complete the cantrip, his wife comforted the man and he stopped--his rage turning to grief over the loss of his daughter. Regardless, part of the magical spell was bound to Paddy. As Paddy walked back to his Range Rover, he was attacked by a tiger. Horribly mauled by the beast, Paddy was rescued by his security and whisked back to his comrades who worked through the rest of the night to staunch Paddy's bleeding.

But it was no use. By seven in the morning, he'd lost too much blood and was pronounced dead. However, that night, Paddy woke up. He hadn't been dead, but merely in a state of transformation. Paddy prowled the camp and was soon spotted and chased. He managed to flee and took refuge in a cave where he realized what it was that he'd become: a tiger. It took him several days to master his transformation, during which it was assumed that the tiger had taken Paddy's body. He stayed away for more than a month, as he was uncertain how to return. He had been pronounced dead; there was no coming back from that condition without raising great concern.

Paddy wended his way back to Kandahar where he was able to sneak on board a transport back to the States. He was legally dead. He could no longer use his identity without incurring great scrutiny. Paddy wandered the eastern seaboard for several months, doing odd jobs to earn enough to eat and secure shelter. He began to intervene in people's lives as either doctor or with skills and abilities he could provide as a tiger.

On one occasion, and his first encounter with another super, Paddy chased the invisible serial killer to Chicago where he took the man down and was brought to the attention of the Great Lake Guardians. With Glory's help, Paddy was able to reclaim his identity again and joined the team as a full time Guardian.

Background: Agnes Primeveire was a nun born in 907 CE. She was only fourteen when her father brought her to the nunnery, and it would be a very long two years before she was able to speak to them again.

One night a man was brought into the cloister with an arrow protruding from his abdomen. It was Agnes' task to minister to him. While she nursed him back to consciousness, he began to look at her more oddly each day. Finally on the day he was to be turned over to the magistrate--for it was discovered by the Abbot that he was a wanted felon and heretic--the man confided in Agnes that he was a mystic warrior who had been dispatched by his order to murder a man who was a kidnapper and rapist of children.

Agnes was appalled. Her ears were innocent and knew nothing of the atrocities that man could inflict on his fellow man. This purported mystic warrior had three hours before he was to be turned over and he continued to talk to Agnes, and educate her on the ways of the world. When he braced her shoulders to stop her crying, he felt a surge of energy flow into him. She was an Inchoate, someone who had inherent mystical power without training. There was little he could do with this newfound information, for his life was forfeit as soon as he was turned over.

Agnes might have been naive, but she was not stupid. She didn't trust this man, and wondered if it was all a ploy to secure his own escape. She would not be moved by his protestations of having a greater purpose in his assassination, nor would she listen to his tales of her hidden power.

The man was turned over, and Agnes heard nothing about the matter again. For five more years, she worked in the nunnery. One day another man appeared in her chamber in the middle of the night. He carried a strange looking staff. He told her of her destiny while she slept and placed the staff under her bed.

Another year passed. A group of marauding brigands thought to loot the nunnery, and make off with the women, selling them into slavery in the far east. Agnes hid in her bed chamber. Two men had been searching for women such as her, who thought to hide from them. They approached.

Agnes heard whispering. Strange, very old voices told her to retrieve the staff. To use it. Protect the nunnery. Let no woman be harmed. The brigands must be stopped lest they repeat their foul crimes throughout the land.

Then the men were upon her. Their powerful hands ripped at her habit. Their hands pressed against her flesh. Then the staff was in her hand and she felt them. All their minds. Their voices. Encouragement. Their strength of will. And then men felt it, too.

She stood before them imbued with the power of the ages and she did as she was bade. Single-handedly she saved the nunnery and punished the brigands. When it was all over, the Mother Superior and the Abbot knew what must be done. She had to go. They could sense the ancient energies moving through her now, and no matter that she had saved dozens of lives; the power in her was incompatible with their faith. She would have to serve another master. Secretly they were pleased that the force within her was benevolent and that she was grounded, but they knew the path she had to walk would not be an easy one. They were glad she was in the world as a force for righteousness, but she could no longer be a part of their world.

And Agnes has walked the earth since then. Only a few select times have the voices communicated with her. She has made her way through a thousand years, never growing a day older than That Day. Doing the work of the just and the right. She has had many names over the centuries. Today she is known as Valiant.
