"Oh NO! She has a SEWING NEEDLE! RRRRRUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNN!!!"

STITCH (Jodi Furman)

Defenses:
Dodge +6 (DC 16), Parry +5 (DC 15), Toughness +0, Fortitude +2, Will +1

Complications:
Phobia (Egophobe)- Jodi is afraid of herself and her own powers, leaving her a recluse.

Total: Abilities: 4 / Skills: 4--2 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 6 / Defenses: 11 (26)

-Stitch is another member of "The Flight", and didn't do much other that be weird (she was afraid of her powers and everybody around her other than teammate Groundhog) and get attacked by a feral Wild Child once. She had a semi-unique power: Low-Level Magnetic Control, utilizing a needle with precision. She's actually a PL 5.5 despite only appearing once, and she even held off The Swordsman for a bit with her powers, but she'd probably never hold up to actual heroics, especially since these characters were apparently around during the Silver Age (where most heroes were weaker).

-Yeah, I don't know who this is either. But he's an Alpha Flight character, dammit, so I MUST stat him! He's one of three Gamma Flight members (the third tier, below Alpha & Beta) not to be promoted to higher levels, essentially created visually by John Byrne in one single page outlining all the members ("I guess I'd better flesh out these guys!", he told himself later when he needed plots). He's supposedly an uber-genius wearing a helmet to enhance his own genius, which is such a stupid power (in addition to his stupid codename) that he was kind of an obvious joke, and disposed of with ease in the comics, but not before going crazy and betraying the team. His death is REALLY convoluted, as he tried to murder Alpha Flight after his rejection, but became brain-dead after looking into Shaman's Magic Pouch of Confusing Plot Devices, then got shrunk and placed IN the pouch, THEN he got taken over by Sasquatch's disembodied mind, AT WHICH POINT he was killed by something (Walt later moved on to another body).

-I presume he built devices to give himself some kind of edge, but obviously from his history he sucks too bad to even be higher than The Enforcers of Spider-Man fame, so there he is, PL 4. His Intelligence is very high, but his Skills are low, since you'd figure someone who professed to be "as smart as Reed Richards" would actually have invented some cool stuff and not died so easily (or at least come up with a better code name). I assume he was just bragging, since in the Comics, smart people are ALWAYS giant egomaniacal hams.

Total: Abilities: 44 / Skills: 48--24 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 84 / Defenses: 17 (179)

-OK, here's one of Alpha Flight's big guns. How big? Well, he's still alive, unlike most of the team, so that's pretty big. Somehow, Sasquatch has come to be the FACE of Alpha Flight in the Marvel Universe. He went from "Team Strongman" to "The one who survives all the team-killing events".

-Walter's got one of those 'only in comics' origins, where he goes "Hey! Y'know that horrible accident that created the Hulk and ruined Bruce Banner's life? Well I'm gonna REPLICATE IT on purpose!" The procedure turned him into an orange-furred replicant of Canadian mythos, but it wasn't the radiation; it was the Great Beast, Tanaraq, taking over his body. This resulted in some very convoluted storytelling (I think comics writers don't imagine what the synopses of their stories would read like- how do you fully describe the situation of him becoming a chick thanks to taking over Snowbird's dead body, which is somehow able to turn into a Great Beast as well?), and of course it all got made better later, and he even got to lead his own super-crappy Lobdell-created Alpha Flight team.

-Sasquatch is one of the few Alphans with some respect in the Marvel U. He's gone toe-to-toe with The Hulk, The Juggernaut and The Thing (alot of "The"s in there), all without clear winners, and in terms of raw power, is well-thought-of in the ranking pile of Earth-borne powerhouses. Not a bad gimmick, since the rest of Alpha Flight has been mostly forgotten or made fools of.

-Sasquatch is a PL 10.5 monster on offense (+11 with Area Effects), dealing out +14 Damage from +7 Accuracy- one more notch of power than guys like Warpath, Colossus and Thing get in my builds (and has +13 Toughness), but of course balances it out with relatively weak offensive and defensive skill. He's got the full gamut of Powerhouse-themed stuff, from Impervious Toughness +6, size (he's about 10 feet tall to some artists, and 12 feet PLUS to others), lots of raw strength (Marvel is of course typically low-balling it's stats, as their "Class 100 And Under" guys routinely lift airplanes or battleships, all of which weigh FAAAARRRR in excess of 100 tons- I figure 800 tons is good enough to use Extra Effort to boost it higher- he never really replicated his first feat, tossing a DC-10 hundreds of yards away while it was at full-thrust), some Senses, and a small bit of Regeneration. He's also much smarter and more skilled than other Bricks, going up in cost as a result.

-Not a bad balance, all in all, though he falls to 9.5 in Defense thanks to his sheer size, which I think is accurate based off of his Brickishness in the comics. Ol' Walt is highly-powerful, and probably the top dog on Alpha Flight, but would probably lose in an all-out war with The Thing, by virtue of Ben having way more Combat Advantages, and much higher Saves in general. This is backed up by Sasquatch losing BADLY to The Champion of the Universe (one of the few guys the Champ didn't wuss out on by coming up with "rule violations" that DQ' the REAL contenders), whereas Ben fought to the last drop of fortitude he had left.
-Builds like this, with a distinct superhuman form and a "normal" human identity, always make me think of "Morph" at a single rank for "One other appearance", but really, it for some reason doesn't apply to characters like this. DCA's official "Captain Marvel" build sure didn't have it.

-And here's the 'other' Sasquatch. This one was thought to be an animalized Walter Langkowski, but turned out to be an ACTUAL Sasquatch. Funny, of course, how it managed to be just as big as the one we knew, and exactly the same colour. Also, the idea of a whole family of Thing-class powerhouses living out in British Columbia seems kind of weird. And by weird I mean AWESOME and they should totally take a look at the concept again (of course, there's already a whole tribe of Wendigos out there in my homeland as well. Comics Canada is way cooler than Actual Canada). Oh, and this thing died in a Heroic Sacrifice, protecting his teammates from some super-nano-machines.

-A much weaker, dumber, less skilled version of Sasquatch. Still nasty, but unwise to actually play as, being basically an animal. He's PL 9.5 on offense, PL 9 on defense, so he's not super-elite or anything, but he's dangerous nonetheless.

Complications:
Responsibility (Canadian Government)- Both Corbo Brothers were raised in "Hellhouse", an orphanage funded and controlled by the Canadian government.
Responsibility (Douche)- Cocky and full of bravado, Jared is disliked by a lot of his teammates, and often rubs people the wrong way.
Relationship (Adrian)- Jared is quite close to his brother Flex.
Secret/Responsibility/Disabled (Force Field)- Radius' force field is permanent, and therefore he has no sense of touch, and cannot bathe. He eats using a weird device over his face that converts food into energy.

Total: Abilities: 24 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 46 / Defenses: 8 (99)

-Radius is part of the failed '90s Alpha Flight revamp, a rookie hero who sorta hung around, doing the "wah my force field won't let anyone touch me" thing that Rogue was already doing in X-Men. He went away when the series died, didn't show up for the later revamp, and was confirmed as being one of the "Unimportant De-Powered Mutants" following M-Day. He actually became known as Unus the Untouchable's son (along with brother Flex), thus making them half-siblings of Carmela Unuscione of the Acolytes.

-Hey, it's another Force Field Guy! I've done a handful of these before, and Radius is slightly different in that his field NEVER comes down, and he can't eat or bathe or anything thanks to it. Hence, he doesn't get the usual "Selective" Feat from the Permanent Field. He eats via a special device hooked to his face which he holds food up to. Hence he doesn't need "Immunity (needs to eat)". He's PL 8 on defense (he's easy as hell to hit, since he has no real reason to try dodging), and some of his various Stunts vary, but he can smash away as a PL 8 guy as well, plus Blast away like a PL 7. So he's no elite fighter, but he's pretty good for a rookie.

Relationship (Jared)- Jared is quite close to his brother Radius.

Total: Abilities: 38 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 17 / Defenses: 11 (82)

-Flex was Radius' brother, also from the failed '90s Alpha Flight team. His gimmick was turning his hands into bladed weapons, which is kind of neat for a one-shot villain or something, but really not the kind of thing a guy in a super-hero team should have. For one thing, he can't really attack any non-robots if he's a non-Wolverine type, and as the "shy, reserved guy" on the team, that was about all he could do.

-Flex is a low-end Scrapper-type hero, as he's pretty good in Melee (but not as good as a PL 10 Scrapper would be), but only PL 8 on offense, PL 7.5 on defense. His Blades are pretty good, getting better reach, a higher Crit, and the ability to split his attacks, but he's not dishing out furious amounts of damage either.

-Murmur's probably the weakest of the 2nd Generation Alpha Flight members. She could command people by touching them, and was mostly scene flirting with people or desperately avoiding physical combat. She's currenly de-powered thanks to M-Day, and really she wasn't that interesting.

-Murmur's pretty cheap, for obvious reasons. Not much in the way of Skills or Avantages (though she can control the bestial Sasquatch, giving her some Animal Empathy), and she's mostly dependant on keeping the hell away from fights. She's about as weak as a Power Level 10 hero can actually get, since her Mind Control only works at Touch range, despite it's relatively hard-to-overcome effects. This makes her a PL 9.5 on offense, as it's a powerful Mind Control effect (keep in mind that in comics, nearly EVERYONE fails a test against Control, and it takes some big force of will to break it- that's part of why I give most guys pretty low Will Saves). She can also force people to fall asleep, or even DIE!

Hm, do any Alpha Flight fans know the specifics of which of Windshear's Power Feats come from his armour, and which ones he can do solo? All the bio-sites imply that he needs the armour for accuracy and control, but don't specify if his Air Bullets or some junk require his armour's control?

Way i read it is hes basiclay like Cyclops. All power without the suit better control with it.

A better analogy might be thusly. Without the suit hes swinging a tree around. Big powerful but not much you can do with it.

with the suit he turns the tree into a baseball bat, which is infinitly more useful and versatile but just as capable of hitting like the tree trunk.
Dr. Silverback has wryly observed that this is like trying to teach lolcats about Shakespeare

-Silver & Auric are two Gamma Flight inductees so bad (introduced late in the run, and with the tired old "mutant twins/siblings with similar or opposite powers" schtick) that even Alphanex, the giant Wiki site of Alpha Flight that lists supporting characters that've appeared once or twice, has no entries for them. They're a pair of twins from Hong Kong, who initially sought to take over the government there to prevent it's handover to the Chinese, and then ended up on Gamma Flight, where they died and got merged with some other dude to turn into something. So yeah, "worst characters ever" may suffice here.

-Fairly boring builds, and pretty weak. Even PL 8 seemed too good for these guys, so they get PL 7, with +8 to Damage, and +6 to Attack, making them pretty useless to super-hero battles. It befits a pair of characters that appeared in only eight issues, and never did much in any of them. Auric's more of a generic Flying Blaster, but Silver has more versatility, Creating Ice, using a Fortitude-Damaging Blast, and Snaring things. This comes at the cost of her Fort. Save and overall power, so she's PL 6.5 despite being more expensive by a bit.

-Northstar gets some cred for being the first gay character in superheroics (that's reasonably mainstream). John Byrne states that while desperately attempting to give the team SOME characterization beyond flat 2-D archetypes that can last against the X-Men, he decided to make one of the team members gay. In doing so, he was left with only Jean-Paul, since the women would make it too sexy (and lesbianism was way too associated with Claremont books already- and this was still the early '80s), the married people would be wrong, and Sasquatch would be REALLY, REALLY wrong. It was really subtle for the longest time, until the mid-'90s, when comics could get away with that kind of thing. Not that it made him that much better a character, but it was there. He even got to join the X-Men for a while, before being casually offed by Wolverine, and reborn as a lame assassin type with more powers. And HEY LOOK! A hot-headed, impulsive speedster! Never seen THAT one before!

-Northstar is a PL 10 Speedster, packing a lot of power if he needs to (especially with the Full-Speed Ram), but mostly does Quicksilver-like accurate punches. Great reflexes, initiative, etc. as per usual for speedsters. That Dazzle is pretty effective, but has a very crippling Flaw that alters it's effectiveness. He's basically a pricey PL 10, like most X-Men-class characters would be.

-Aurora was part of the 'twin duo' with her brother Northstar, which is always a nifty thing for one-shot teams, but not much of a good one for writers attempting to flesh out the whole squad. See, the identical costumes, cutesy names, sibling relationship always serves to make the characters just less special to the squad (Shaman has magic, Sasquatch is strong, Box is the tech guy... but they have two speedsters). Byrne made up for this somewhat by making Aurora a crazy psycho with split personalities thanks to a religious upbringing, which would get used over and over again across the years. Poor girl never really got a break.

-Aurora costs a good bit more than Northstar, by virtue of having more Speed Tricks and some Energy Blast stuff, She's almost as fast as he is, but less powerful overall, depending on more tricks. Writers kept adding to her powers over the years, giving her a blast, lightning, and leaving her almost impossible to mentally scan (what with her split personalities) making her a bit more versatile than Northstar, and they added even MORE stuff with The Hand's upgrades, but I'm ignoring all of that for these builds.

Defenses:
Dodge +9 (DC 19), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +1 (+2 D.Roll), Fortitude +5, Will +4

Complications:
Prejudice (Obvious Mutant)- Kara's skin is purple in appearance, and she won't pass for a normal human without lots of make-up.
Power Loss (Submerging)- If Kara's victims are submerged in water, her hold will be immediately broken.

Total: Abilities: 20 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 50 / Defenses: 18 (101)

-Persuasion (originally given the HORRIBLE code-name "Purple Girl", which is even lamer than "Purple Man"-- it may be, in fact, the worst superhero code-name in world history) is the daughter of Zebediah Killgrave, the result of what is essentially long-term rape, as Killgrave controlled Kara's mother for years (he eventually fell in love with her for reals, but she understandably was rather peeved about the, you know, RAPE, so she abandoned him). Kara ended up gaining her father's powers (thus making her less of a mutant and more a new species, as some biologists would note) at a massive level, and she joined Alpha Flight's junior league Beta Flight team. She wasn't much of a super-hero, but her power got the team out of quite a few scraps. She eventually retired, realizing she couldn't hold up to the ideals (which is the fate of 80% of the supporting charactes in the book, oddly enough)

-Hey, a PL 10 Beta Flighter! But that's mainly because her Save DC is +10 for her Pheromones (Scent-Perception, even though I've seen her use it on sentient crystals). She's remarkably effective at that one thing, but like most one-trick power types, she's got NOTHING else up her sleeve, with Skills, Advantages, or anything. Hell, her melee attack balances out to PL 3.5, and her Defenses to PL 5.5, making her all but completely useless against something like a robot, super-willful type, or if her powers get de-activated. Her control is actually kind of interesting though, in that it has neat flaws- people will turn purple if controlled (making their teammates obviously see something is wrong), and her power is broken if the subjects are submerged in water. It's REALLY powerful and wide-reaching (Selective Area Perception Mind Control is NOT something you want on a Player Character), but she's such a one-trick pony that she's really not worthwhile in a major super-hero battle.

Weakness (Must Leave Armour)- There is a danger of permanently fusing with the Armour if Roger does not leave it periodically.

Total: Abilities: 4 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 99 / Defenses: 7 (135)

-Box strikes me as the kind of messed-up crap a writer thinks up when he's out of ideas for his series. "Hey, y'know what's new? A super-hero with NO LEGS!" At least he's one up on poor Barrage of the Dark Riders. Byrne drew him up as one of the background guys in his first issue of "Alpha Flight", and decided a year later to figure out just who this guy was. This inventor is on Gamma Flight, controlling a robot with a helmet he invented. And then he merges into the next robot he creates, becoming a minor-league hero, aiding Alpha Flight for a bit. Then they killed him when Lionel Jeffries took over his body, and we NEVER heard from or saw him ever again. Especially since his buddy Madison became the newer, cooler, Jim Lee-drawn Box. Kind of a waste, as the guy had SOME characterization, but the terrible shiny blue robot design and his own appearance (a fat guy with no legs) probably held him back.

-Statting a guy with no arms and non-working legs who goes into a power-suit that lets him move around is easy once you realize that the Suit "buys off" all of the low stats the character starts out with (and naturally, wouldn't give unnatural boosts to any other character using the suit). He ends up being very powerful on some levels, but is horrifically limited by his deformities, making him very, very dependent on it. Box ends up being a PL 8 Powersuit build because he's so inexperienced (he doesn't last a whole lot of time on the book).

-Note that Madison Jeffries can ALSO don this armour. At which point, it actually gets cheaper, since his natural strength, dex & con, along with Attack & Defense, are high enough that the suit doesn't have to add to it. I figure that most armours have a default strength, and merely build their wearer's strength up to that level. I mean, Aunt May wearing Iron Man's armour would probably have the same raw strength Tony would in it, since it's SOLELY the machine doing the lifting (and if it's not, Tony himself is only providing like 400 lbs of lift onto 100 tons- not much of a difference), y'know?

Complications:
Relationship (Heather Hudson, Diamond Lil)- Jeffries had a fling with Lil, then hooked up with (and got engaged to) his team leader Vindicator, and finally (after Mac returned to take Heather again) married Lil. They were happy in Comics Limbo for years until she died as a side-character in some X-thing.
Power Loss (Check Required)- Jeffries can effectively create anything using his mutant powers, but he still has to know how it works. It's not worth a full Flaw since his Technology Skill is very advanced, but he DOES need to make a check, especially for complex machinery, or when working with unfamiliar materials.
Enemy (Lionel Jeffries)- Madison's brother is insane- a mutant possessing the power to manipulate flesh and bone the way Madison does technology, Lionel experiments upon human beings, and has threatened Alpha Flight many times, including the events that caused the first Box's death.

Total: Abilities: 28 / Skills: 38--19 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 147 / Defenses: 17 (219)

-Box (Madison Jeffries' version) is probably my favourite Alpha Flight character, by virtue of the Rule of Cool (ie. he looked the coolest, so must therefore be the best). A big, Jim Lee-drawn robot body made for some cool visuals, and it didn't help that he could turn stuff into a Box Ship, fly around space, and do all sorts of other neat stuff. Unfortunately, his run was never that huge, and he eventually became one of those "Marvel Limbo" characters that would only pop up occasionally, tending to be controlled or going crazy or something, as tends to happen when you're a third-stringer character. He could've been something if he's stuck around with Heather in their little hook-up, but marrying non-entity Diamond Lil did him no favours. If there was a character I would make into an uber-badass if I wrote comics, it'd be Madison Jeffries. He's currently a background guy in the X-Books, as they realized with Forge being crazy and evil, they had a spot that needed filling (ie. "Tech Guy").

-Not an easy guy to stat, but a fascinating test of a game system's strengths and limitations. I mean, theoretically, he could have Variable Power (with "Needs Sufficient Mass" or "Check Required" Limitations) in the just about any combination, but that ignores the fact that he's always got the Box Armour with him, and he can't just make it out of anything. So I settled for using the Box Armour as a Device, and used Transform (Wide Variety to Wide Variety, which would include machines, Devices & Equipment as long as they're made of plastics, glass or metals) to show the occasional cases where Box turns into a drill, or lets out some massive guns, or shoots out a solar burst or something.

-It's a complex little set-up, so I'll go through it bit-by-bit. He can Comprehend Machines (rarely shown, but he can do it), Reduce things to scrap (basically Blasting at short-range- he did this to a Sentinel once), or just plain move Metals around. There's his big effect- the Transform, which has Reach 5 (he has to be within 25 feet to use it, and this fits better than a "Diminished Range" Ranged Attack), can affect 400 tons (that's what the Increased Mass is there for), and it works in a Precise manner.

-Then there's the Box Robot, a big powersuit (it's size varies by the artist, but 10 feet seems a good start. He CAN make it bigger, anyways) which gives him Powerhouse-level stats, Flight, and a Blast (usually with Multiattack) that can hit nearly any type of Energy (he's used Sonics, Light, Plasma, Bullets, etc.). This is his usual Equipment, and he sometimes makes it out of OTHER stuff, so it qualifies for a Device (in that it's easily replaceable). Now the issue comes when combining his Transform WITH his Device- he can effectively change the Box suit's size, shape and capabilities (tank treads, he turns it into a ROBOTIC T-REX at one point!). There's a minor Quirk on the Transform that he cannot use it to modify other Tech unless he's out of the Box Robot- it's worth about two points since he can still modify the Robot ITSELF, but he'd be highly vulnerable otherwise.

-His "phase in" trick where he jumps into the Box Armour is pretty much him using the Transform to make a hole in whatever he's going into. All in all, he's got what is almost Variable Power, but using two different effects, and paid for a bit differently (he pays for 2 ranks of Variable Descriptor, for example).

Here's another optional set-up for Box's power, and it's a fair bit pricier (18 points' worth), because Variable has to cover the entire breadth of the Box Armour:
"Mutant Powers: Ability to Manipulate Metals, Plastics & Glass"
Transform 9 (Any Metal, Plastic or Glass into Any Metal, Plastic or Glass) (Feats: Increased Mass 4- 400 tons, Precise, Reach 5) (Extras: Continuous Duration) (Quirks: Cannot Use Powers While Inside of Suit -2) [53]
Comprehend 2 (Machines) [4]

Variable (Any Technological Power) (Flaws: Limited- Removable/Requires Technology) [108]

(Sample Powers)
"Reduce to Scrap" Damage 10 (Feats: Reach 5) (Extras: Penetrating) (Flaws: Metals, Glass & Plastics) (15)
"Move Metals" Move Object 7 (Feats: Increased Mass 5- 100 tons) (Flaws: Limited to Metals, Glass & Plastics) (Diminished Range -2) (10)

"Box Robot"
Growth 2 (Str & Toughness +2, +2 Mass, +1 Intimidation, -1 Dodge/Parry, -2 Stealth) -- (8 feet) (4)
Enhanced Strength 9 (18)
Protection 8 (8)
"Automatic Blasts" Blast 10 (Extras: Multiattack) (30) -- (31)
AE: Blast 10 (Feats: Variable Descriptor- Any Technological) (20)
Flight 9 (1,000 mph) (18)
Senses 4 (Infra & Extended Vision, Extended Hearing, Radio) (4)
Immunity 7 (All Environmental Conditions, Suffocation, Drowning) (7)
-- (90 points)

Comic book-wise, I liked both the Roger Bochs and Madison Jeffries versions of Box. Personally, I think a physically challenged super-hero, who isn't blind (Dr. Mid-nite I-III, Daredevil, Shroud, Tagak) and has hands so he can wipe his own butt (Barrage, Ripclaw...yes, I know ripclaw has hands, but, really would you want to put those claws near your heinie?), was a good idea.

I like both armor designs, though most of the Roger Bochs stuff I saw was drawn by Mike Mignola, who, Hellboy aside isn't one of my favorite illustrators.
