Narsil's Builds (Build 200: Thor)

Postby Narsil » Mon Feb 23, 2009 9:17 am

Narsil's Builds
Most Recent Build: THOR!, 16th November 2009, GMT.
Overall Number: 200 builds. 1 set of templates.

Welcome to my thread of builds. As you can guess, I am Narsil, and my goal is to build whatever the bloody hell I feel like at any given time. It began with the (now probably abandoned) Earth-42 project, and as a place to put my builds from Section 20 and mainstream comics. It has become the latter two almost exclusively from this point. Perhaps it'll probably evolve again. I've also begun a (very slow-moving) templates project for the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting.

I will accept requests, provided I know enough about the character in question to formulate a decent enough approximation within the M&M ruleset. And, of course, I like the character enough.

Notes
Ah yes, it's none other than the British equivalent of Captain Marvel. And probably one of my favourite 'superheroes'. Quotes are used mostly because all of the 'heroic' nature here is more or less overshadowed by the fact that he turns into a totalitarian dictator by the end of it, utterly remaking the whole world into a utopia. Or dystopia. It's not really much of an easy question to answer, I must say, but Marvelman's interesting because it was one of the first to mix politics and superheroes. Without being an intensely racist 'Slap-A-Jap' poster in an old Superman comic, that is. Naturally; this character was, although made by someone else, completely remade and refined by none other than Alan Moore. Whose run on the comic is the one that I've taken most of the influence from. Or, rather, all of the influence. I've never seen Marvelman in any other context.

He's also known in the USA as Miracleman, due to copyright concerns and massive amounts of hatred coming from the direction of Marvel Comics; they didn't want to be associated with Marvelman.

And it strikes me, on some level, that this is the first ever build of Marvelman made for the Mutants & Masterminds comic. And here's Micky Moran in normal form, possibly a bit overstated for a baseline human, but he was able to outrun and dodge the Super-Dog for quite some time even without turning into Marvelman. I'm not sure if I should insert a power loss or weakness to hearing the word schadenfreude in his ordinary form, but I ultimately left it out.

Nicely done. I've always wanted to read Marvelman due to his connection to Captain Marvel, though I think I'm more interested in the original stories rather than Alan Moore's revision.

I liked Alan Moore's revision better than the idea of the original stories, myself. They were really just a bunch of cheesy and cheap Silver-Age stuff that was more or less just Captain Marvel renamed and with Mary Marvel replaced by a male character, from what I can gather. Some of them are reprinted as flashbacks in the main comic.

The remake basically revises the whole origin story from scratch and makes it into the first truly twisted superhero comic. It's not to everyone's tastes though; it's even darker, grittier and more violent than Watchmen was.

Yeah, I like cheesy and silly more than I like dark and gritty. It's a thing.

Notes
This is the Earth-42 version of Captain Britain, after some mild setting alteration in which this was originally a superhero called Superman. As it stands, he's still generally the same bloke.

For this build, I've mixed in a few odd background ideas for Superman from just about everywhere. And I've given him the different costume; while iconic, I didn't really like the original costume, and while I like the mythos of Superman, that costume drags him down a whole bloody lot. I suppose it's the whole underwear-on-the-outside thing. As a bit of a consolation, he wore the classical outfit for about a year or so, and got a bit tired of being called the Man of Boxers.

Anyway, this is more or less classical to the Superman mythos despite him technically being the Earth-42 version of Captain Britain. He's a hero in the traditional sense. He won't kill people, but he's less naive and boyscout-like. I suppose that puts him at somewhere between traditional Supes and a certain Kheran Warlord.

His origin story more or less fits the original, with a few minor details added in. He was sent away in an experimental faster-than-light vehicle, and arrived at Earth; unlike the Byrne reboot, he was born on Krypton, and placed inside the experimental pod as a last-ditch attempt to save the Kryptonian species. He was not the only person sent away. Kal-El arrived on Earth in the year 1981, and was raised in more of a traditional fashion. No kryptonite-mutated freaks turning up. Another rather major difference is that he was raised on a farm in Yorkshire, England, not Smallville, USA. In the first few years of his career as a superhero and news journalist, he operated in Huddersfield. Ultimately, he relocated to London, and operates there. I haven't included cities like Metropolis or Gotham in this continuity, generally.

Other than that, this represents a fairly easy Superman build. And one that seems to make a bit of logical sense to me; super-senses and heat vision being alternative powers. I haven't included freeze breath due to him not actually having freeze breath yet. He does have super-breath, which does the same job in a pinch, except for the whole freezing thing.

Welcome the Roll Call Narsil, and congratulations starting out with a big bang on your thread. But i do have to say, that has to be the coolest picture of superman i have ever seen. And a pretty clean build too.

Ditto. Only critique is it looks like unarmed attacks break caps +13 melee, +18 damage is over the PL15 cap.

Thanks. :D The image is by the late Michael Turner (died last year of bone cancer). And I'm glad that the build worked; I'm relatively new to using this particular system.

Ah, that'd be one of those obscure rules that I missed. I'll rectify that.

Abilities 28 + Skills 16 (64 ranks) + Feats 10 + Powers 62 + Combat 24 + Saves 14 - Drawbacks 4 = 150

Complications: Addiction (using magic), Prejudice (lesbian Jew), Responsibility (friends, saving the world)

Notes
Ah yes, Willow Rosenberg; very, very powerful, but ultimately weaker than, say, the typical comic book mystic (even though, in season eight, she is a comic book mystic). Where she excels in this is her versatility, I think. She can do practically anything from hurling cars about to teleporting to just about anywhere in the known galaxy given a full-action. I haven't counted in any Astral Projection, Dimension Travel or other such as they're often shown as tiring for her to do or as part of a big ritual, as such I've basically slapped the ritualist feat on her and given her a very high rank of Arcane Lore. Anything else, such as far more incidental portals, can be handled via power-stunting off of her magic array, given extra effort.

She is a few pp over the typical PL10 mark, but I didn't think she warranted being a full PL11. It's best to handle established characters as NPCs anyway.

Update, 23rd August 2009; I've cleaned up the build to use this to reflect Season 5 and 6 Willow. Far more reliant on rituals, and still in a relationship with Tara. Also technically the most powerful character of the era; it didn't quite seem right to me that Willow was PL10 when Buffy was PL12, but I'm going to also create Dark Willow and Season 7 Willow as a pair of follow-ups.

Very spiffy Willow. You've inspired me to do some much needed updates to my (Season 5) version.

You have Marvelman and Mike with the same INT, but I remember Mike saying something like, 'He's cleverer than I am, we share the same mind, but he's cleverer'.

I personally would give mike a 12 or 14 and MM an 18. He presumably has the same intelligence as the kid, who went from being homeless to running a multinational corporation in 20 years or so.

EDIT: NEVER MIND!!!!! I missed the enhanced INT. I'm getting blind!!!!

Which is exactly why I gave Marvelman about twelve ranks of Enhanced Intelligence. I re-read the scenes where they tested out his powers while I was making the build. It's also why I gave him Enhanced Dexterity; not only is he smarter than Mike, he's more agile than Mike.

Notes
This was too tempting to pass up after I saw the image, really. I'm not really trying to offend anyone, but Jesus as an uber-awesome superhero who fights with the POWER OF GOD would, in essence, be awesome even by the most uptight person's standards. I didn't include much in the way of Divine Wrath powers like bolts of lightning or Old Testament style rains of fire and brimstone, instead opting to make him more like Jesus, Last Son of Krypton.

If anyone finds it offensive, I'll take it down. I may not be religious myself but I'm not insensitive.
