World War II - Saving Tomorrow

To End All Wars
1. The Encounter

It was a cold afternoon in New York City, and five unusual companions shared a drink at Ma's Dinner: Xavier, the monk, tried to evangelize the other in his strong Spanish accent, while Meno sighed and Georgy, the Russian, tried to drown the words of Jesuit offering vodka to everyone. In one corner, Alice was squirming impatiently: Jimmy was getting late.

James Black was one of her childhood friends, an Irish descendant who started earning his living as a freighter in the harbor since he was very young. But that was years ago, before the abduction, before the chains, before being recruited to serve his country with her special gifts, and the mysterious Carlos Vidal baptized her with that Germanic-sounding nickname with which she had been known since: "Ketten".

It had been several days since Jimmy had made contact, and had asked her to meet before Saturday. Alice had managed to move his influence to obtain a license for her and her companions, but only managed to get it for Saturday, and under two conditions imposed by her superiors: They must have kept together, and their "special skills" should be retained in the utmost secrecy.

While Alice was lost in her thoughts, a black car approached them at breakneck speed. Georgy, who was still standing, saw the rear window opening and noticed how the tip of a machine gun emerging from it.

"Get down", he shouted.

Diners all around him did as he ordered, but Alice, surprised for her companion's yell, turned just in time to see Jimmy waving from a distance, a few seconds before the fire of the machine gun reached him, stealing his life in a matter of seconds.

2. The Chase

Alice stood, stunned by the death of his friend.

Her companions ran in pursuit of the murderers of the car, whose car turned left a couple of blocks away: Talos and Xavier ran into the street, hoping to cut their way, while Meno and Georgy took a motorcycle to follow them. While Alice came forth to Jimmy, Georgy's hands fused to the motorcycle, and the engine started spontaneously.

Xavier was quick to realize that Talos was outrunning him, and the foot chase was futile, so he decided to "borrow" a car to continue the chase. Talos noticed and spontaneously generated a pair of daggers, with which he clung to the back of the car and managed to get on without his partner having to slow down.

Meanwhile, the black car was dodging the motorcycle, getting on sidewalks and sneaking down alleys to avoid Georgy and Meno, while our heroes dodge the other cars and took makeshift ramps to reach them. While the chase was on, Meno focused on the villains, one by one, to hide their senses and camouflage their arrival. As they reached them, Georgy ordered the car to stop.

The car stopped suddenly, and the motorcycle passed though. Meno bowed and opened the back door with the momentum, and then he leaned against the car to pull his opponent, while Georgy slowed down the motorcycle and separated himself from it to meet them, protected by the cloak of invisibility that Meno had provided. Meanwhile, his partner lay down his foe to the ground and left him paralyzed at the stunned sight of his companions, who did not understand what was happening.

Everyone came out of the car to see what happened with their partner. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a metal javelin reached one of them, while another was struck by a bullet: Georgy, invisible to him, had approached at enough range for a close range shot, while Xavier was coming down the avenue, with Talos standing on the roof of the car, preparing a second javelin that materialized in his hand.

Both robbers pulled out guns and started shooting at Talos, who had to cover behind the car while Xavier slowed and threw a dagger that merely touched one of them. Georgy shot the driver and ordered the gun being holded by his companion to jam, while Meno humped at him, passing the car through and through. Overwhelmed, the only attacker who stood took flight, but the heroes reached him and knocked him down.

Before they could question him, however, the villain broke a tooth, and an unknown chemical began to destroy his entire face.

3. Starkweather's Lab

Back in Ma's Dinner, our heroes found a crowd around the dead body of Jimmy, and Xavier came to give him the final rest. While he was leaning against him, he noticed a couple of papers sticking out of his pocket, and cautiously took them. He showed them at his companions afterwards: They were a business card of a Daily Bugle reporter named Valerie Braveheart, and a piece of paper on which Jimmy was asked to report to Starkweather Labs at 8: 00p.m.

Xavier called the newspaper, posing as Jimmy, and they informed him that Miss Braveheart had already gone to meet him at Starkweather Labs, Georgy recalled it as a company dedicated to creating pharmaceuticals from plants and exotic animals. Xavier looked for the address in the phone book and they all went over there in the car that Xavier had "borrowed".

They arrived to Starkweather Labs around 7pm, and found three trucks with the company logo, and a brown coupe parked in front of a big warehouse. Several workers were quite busy loading them with individual metal tanks identified as medical products. They decided that Alice, Georgy and Talos would question them, while Meno and Xavier mounted watch from behind.

The freighters knew Jimmy, and they were waiting for him, but did not have much more information. Georgy noted, however, that they were armed. The three decided to go up to the office to investigate a little more, and no one seemed to prevent it. At his signal, Meno and Xavier followed them, hidden in the shadows.

As they climbed the stairs, our heroes heard shouts coming from the back of the cellar: Apparently, a deep-voiced man violently interrogated a helpless woman. As they approached to see what was happening, they could see from one of the windows of the warehouse a woman tied to a chair, and a muscular man slapping her to get information, surrounded by a dozen henchmen with swastikas applauding his violence.

Immediately, Meno and Georgy rushed down the stairs, while Talos smashed through the window, creating a wondrous armor that protected the woman as he fell. The man tried to hit Talos, but he stopped his fist and created a spear with which he attacked back, striking the big man on one side.

Meno fell suddenly upon them, performing a stunt in the air that allowed him to reach the big guy with a kick, while Georgy joined himself to the crane controls to catch two of the thugs, who began shooting his teammates, with them. From above, Xavier started throwing his daggers against the villains, knocking several of them out, while Alice spread out the chains she was wearing, animating them to hit the henchmen, making a knockout blow to several others.

In the end, only one of the men managed to escape through a back door before, after a deep wound of the spear of Talos tore his side, the strong man threw a grenade into the containers. The explosion immediately generated a huge chain reaction that Talos successfully contained, expanding his shield as much as he could. Eventually, the shockwave managed to push him back a little, but Meno and women were safe.

When his shield shrinked back to its normal size, the strong man had disappeared.

4. Klauss Adler

Meno ran after the strongman, while Alice and Georgy returned to the trucks. By the time they arrived, the trucks were moving away. Hurried, Georgy opened the coupe, manipulating the door mechanism, while Meno reached them after completely surrounding the warehouse following the trail of blood.

They hurried in pursuit of the trucks, which separated and took into the labyrinthine street to avoid them. Georgy, bound as he was to the mechanisms of the car, sped up after the nearest one and quickly began to cut the distance. Suddenly, the rear doors were opened, and two ruffians came out with machine guns ready, but Alice was faster: She extended her chains and trapped both men, pulling them out of the vehicle.

Georgy was aligned with the truck, and Alice used her chain to start the driver's door and out of the cabin where he was, while Georgy ordered the truck to stop. Frightened, his companion ran away, but was chased by Meno, who reached him and immediately neutralized him.

Questioning him, the heroes discovered that the strongman was a German spy named Klauss Adler, and the trucks were heading to the airport, but he couldn't say if it was to La Guardia or Newark. They also found that Adler had established a meeting place not far from there, in case they had to separate. With that information, they decided to take the truck and go to the meeting point.

Upon arrival, they were recognized by Adler, who ordered the other two trucks to flee. Once again, Georgy quickly reached them, and once again they were greeted by the bullets of his enemies, while Alice used her chains as a shield. Georgy began to overtake, but the knaves shot his rear tire, causing him to lose control. At the last second, while Georgy did his best to avoid the imminent collision, Alice threw a chain to the truck and Meno clung to her as she was dragged by the truck.

Meno tried to protect Alice from being dragged against the pavement, but suffered from several scrapes on his back. Meanwhile, Alice was greeted by a burst of machine gun fire, which only caused scratches, but forced her to loose grip from the truck. Both were rolling on the ground as the truck moved away in the distance.
