I have been running my latest campaign setting for the past several months for two of my friends. They have been having a wonderful time with the campaign. I felt it was time to share their adventures with you all.

The Mangaverse Madness setting is based very much on my love of anime and manga. Primarily it is based on the concept of science adventures and archaeological exploration; like those found in the pages of Fred Perry's Gold Digger comics.

The world is very much like our own Earth, but with anime-inspired style and wackiness. While it is not an everyday occurance, one can easily see a cat-girl or cyborg walking down the street. The supernatural, high-tech wonders, alien devices, and superheroes all exist. However, the point of the campaign is that of exploration and adventure rather than fighting crime and thwarting villainy.

The Player Characters
The PCs are Margaret Elizabeth "Dizzy" Dryden and Akane "Chiyo" Ichiyama. They live in the city of San Francisco. They are also both members of a secret society of adventuring explorers called the Sextant Society. One can only join this secretive group if they can find it - which both PCs have done in their respective pasts.

EPISODE 1: THE QUEST FOR THE RINGS

It is autumn in the city of San Francisco...

Margaret “Dizzy” Dryden has finally cracked the code on her missing parents’ journal. The final entries describe a set of Prismatic Rings which they sought out on their final adventure. These rings were placed around the world by “The Patron” who did not think any of his children were worthy of their possession. The Patron hid the rings and layered tests upon them to prove the worthiness of the seeker. The journal describes the Drydens' final mission taking them to the mountain of Malselv in Norway. It also mentions that the four Prismatic Rings which the Drydens had already found were in possession of Akane Ichiyama.

Dizzy takes her scooter to Japan Town and arrives to Akane’s antique shop. “Old Auntie” Shizuko and her grandson, Hoshi, are tending the store. Dizzy makes her way through the antiques, desperately trying not to trip and break anything. She goes up the creaky stairs to meet Akane, who invites her in for tea. After the lengthy tea ceremony, Dizzy asks about the Prismatic Rings. Akane changes outfits and has Dizzy hold on to a stuffed bear (Akane: "This is important... it will protect you") while taking her into the basement vault. Akane opens the vault and produces the Prismatic Rings (Red, Green, Indigo, and Yellow).

Dizzy wants to seek out the other rings and trace her parents’ steps in hopes of finding where they went. Akane agree to travel with her. Checking with her guardian Stanford Donoghue for permission, Akane and Dizzy charter a flight to Oslo, Norway…

Where it is very cold. They are told to meet with Hans Jarlson, who will be their guide to the Norwegian wilderness. The Society often makes use of Hans' skill when they travel into Europe, as he is the best outdoorsman in the world. The two take a cab to Hans’ cabin, where they meet Syggn (Hans' house-keeper) and finally Hans himself (whom Dizzy falls in lust with at first sight, thanks to her raging teenage hormones). Syggn prepares breakfast, and after the meal the group adjourns to discuss business. Hans agrees to take the two into the mountains.

After a half-day drive, they arrive to Malselv and begin hiking. Thanks to Dizzy’s tek-pack sensors, they find the hidden shelf that allows them access inside the mountain. They travel up a set of stone-carved steps and discover a Norse temple within the mountain, filled with warrior statues and the carved runes for “Wisdom.” Entering the temple, the group sees two daises. One contains a stone-carved quill; the other holds a stone-carved sword. Dizzy picks up the quill, believing that it symbolizes wisdom. The floor then collapses and everyone falls into darkness…

Margaret is the daughter of the famous Dryden adventuring duo. While they pair would go on their adventures, they would often leave their daughter in the care of her godparents, the retired adventurers Stanford and Priscilla Donoghue.

When her parents were around, they were always loving and affectionate to Margaret, showing her the wonders they had discovered and delighting in each other’s company as a family. But then, one day, they did not come back…

Growing up without her parents was rough on Margaret. She lost herself in books and intellectual pursuits. As she grew older, Margaret became known as “Dizzy” due to her clumsiness; her adolescent body would grow out of proportion to what she was familiar. This caused all sorts of trouble when the Donoghues were forced to leave Dizzy in the care of Auntie Shizuko in her antique shop (many broken antiques were charged to their account). Here, Dizzy met Akane Ichiyama, who taught Dizzy how to appreciate the wonders and whimsy of the world around her.

One day, while going through her parents’ belongings, Dizzy discovered their adventuring journals, which were encoded. She also discovered a collapsible sextant. Using the sextant and translating the code in the journal, Dizzy was able to discover the secret headquarters of the Sextant Society. Not only that, but her parents, godparents, and Akane were members of the group!

With her incredible intelligence and keen inventive mind, Dizzy has joined their ranks and hopes to prove her worth to the Society… and find out what happened to her parents.

Akane Ichiyama is actually the kitsune Chiyo. The kitsune are called spirit creatures in the East. In the West, they are refered to as "fey" or "faeries."

Akane is very old. Even she is not sure how old she is, as, sometime in her past, she made enemies with The Black Dragon. This powerful dragon used its powers to possess her body and use her powers for who-knows-what for an unknown amont of time. When she recovered, Akane was in a different time and place. It was thanks to the efforts of an early generation of the Sextant Society that she helped learn about the world and recover her capabilities.

Akane has help guide the Society for the last century, using her knowledge of the mystical world and hidden places to her advantage. During WWII, Akane adopted a young girl named Shizuko, who had lost her parents in the American interment camps. Their relationship took many turns over the decades, from Akane being a mother figure, to the two being more like sisters. Evantually, Shizuko settled down and had a family. Shizuko now runs an antique shop in Japan Town, San Francisco, where Akane lives in the upstairs apartment.

EPISODE 2: THE FIRST TEST

As they fall, Akane attempts to grab everyone and slow their fall. She manages to get everyone together, but they all hit the ground before she can put her plan into action. Luckily, the ladies land on Hans, who seems unharmed by the fall. Dizzy is muddled, but Hans brings her to consciousness with Dizzy having a brief, amusing waking dream.

Dizzy: “Please be gentle…”
Hans: “Are you alright...?”
Dizzy: “Huh?” :oops:

The team once again sees before them a stone sword and stone pen. As they stand, an army of statues awakens and raises their weapons. Using their Dizzy's technology, Han's great strength and Akane's martial skill (an the ability to produce massive weapons from seemingly nowhere!), the group fights off the first wave of animated statues.

As the second equally powerful wave arrives, Akane picks up the stone sword. This causes the statues to halt their movement.

A stone plaque in the room, holding Nordic runes speaking of the true path of a warrior, tells them they have passed the test. A shaft of light appears, and a Blue Prismatic Ring is given to them.Having succeeded, the group leaves the stone temple and makes their way down the mountain.

They camp in the wilds that evening, with Dizzy unsuccessfully attempting to use the powers of the Prismatic Rings. In the morning, after a breakfast of fish (raw for Akane) they pack up and leave for Hans’ cabin. On the way, Dizzy reads through her parent’s notes. She is able to surmise – based on the locations of the previous Prismatic Ring finds – that the next Ring can be found within the Himalayas. Arriving to Hans’ cabin, they renegotiate with Hans to join them on their continued expedition. He agrees and invites the two to stay overnight.

Hans and Dizzy get to know each other while Akane and Syggn make food preparations and pack for the next expedition. As Dizzy and Hans get caught up in each other's life stories and "personal grooming," Akane ends up eating all of their food.

EPISODE 3: COLD, HARD BITS

Arriving at Nepal, the group gathers their equipment and checks through customs. They rent a truck and drive to a small village where they set up a base camp. The next morning, the group makes their way into the Himalayas. Dizzy is bundled up to an excessive fashion, as she is incredibly cold ("Why does no one talk about the crappy, unconmfortably cold parts of adventures?").

The journey through the mountains takes several days to reach the designated coordinates. Traveling through a crevasse, the group enters a hidden valley where heat and vegetation are abundant. The hoots of strange beasts can be heard in the distance. Akane recognizes the region as a yeti valley (she knows these places, as several are hidden throughout these mountains). In the distance, a stone structure can be seen; something Akane notes that yetis do not build.

Approaching the structure, the group sheds their heavy layers of clothing. Yetis can be seen in the mists...

Dizzy is terrified, as the yetis look like Wompas. Akane assures her that - while fearsome in appearance - yetis are gentle and benevolent creatures.

As they arrive to the structure, the group sees it is yet another Norse-like temple. However, they note that they are not the first to arrive as the rusted remains of Nazi German vehicles are found around the structure. There are no signs of the former owners.

After setting up the camp, Akane makes contact with the yeti. They inform her that: "Dude, the last folks to arrive, several decades ago, were rude and totally violent. They went into the temple and never came out."

The group travels into the temple and eventually encounters a vast chamber with a pillar of light and two standing braziers; one full of burning embers, the other filled with freezing ice. Runes around the chamber speak of “Temperance.” They also see a grizzly sight of Nazi soldiers. Some of them are frozen in blocks of ice, while others appear to have been burned into ashes.

Figuring that the test must be about placing the right amount of ice and coal into the shaft of light, Dizzy plans the approach of Hans and Akane to match each other step for step. They then place a piece of coal and ice into the light at the same time. This completes the Test of Temperance. The orange Prismatic Ring appears in the shaft of light. Just as Dizzy is about to reach of it, an armored man appears in the chamber. He teleports across the room and steals the ring from Dizzy’s grasp.

The armored figure introduces himself as “The Last Son” and demands the other Prismatic Rings from Dizzy. Refusing him, Dizzy activates the weapons of her tek-pack and throws a neural-stun blade to Hands. Akane summons forth a massive sword from nowhere. A massive battle ensues between the heroes and the Last Son. He is able to shrug off one blow after another, until Akane attacks him from surprise and binds him in a cocoon of stone. The Last Son recognizes her as a fey-thing and teleports away.

Confused as to what the Last Son said about Akane, she confesses to Hans and Dizzy that she is a kitsune.

EPISODE 4: STILL TOO COLD!

Akane contacts the spirit world, attempting to figure out why a Norse temple is located in this region. She is answered by a dryad with strawberry hair. The dryad shows Akane that the region is one of the roots of “The World Tree.” Looking "upwards," Akane sees a massive tree that goes into the ether of the spirit world farther than she can perceive.

Afterwards, Akane spends the day gathering herbs and vegetables from the valley. She notes that this particular yeti valley has vegetation from all over the world; plants she has never before seen in other yeti valleys she has encountered in the past.

Dizzy spends time excavating a frozen Nazi officer so she can take his luger. She then goes to the old vehicles and scraps them for parts, which she uses to fashion into a massive satellite antennae. She uses the rings as a focus and attempts to hone in on the energy signature of the rings in the possession of the Last Son. She discovers the energy coming from San Francisco!

As she was building the satellite, the curious yetis gathered around to watch the massive structure being created. They asked if they could watch TV on the array. Dizzy turns on the Food Network. A good night is had by all.

The group leaves the yeti valley, bundling up once again to trek into the freezing Himalayan Mountains. On the way to their base camp, they are ambushed by The Last Son. This time, he has sought to “even the odds” by bringing two frost giants and four winter wolves. The battle is joined, as the winter wolves are loosed on the heroes. Dizzy gives Hans the neural-saber and activates a gauntlet weapon for herself. Hans cuts through the frost giants, while Akane and Dizzy deal with the wolves. In a truely anime fashion, Dizzy’s kinetic weapon blasts the wolves, the knockback throwing them several miles away.

Akane creates a 'bologna golem' to drive the remaining wolves at the Last Son. She directs the wolves towards him until one of the giants manages to regain control of the giant animals.

Hans manages to neural-stun a giant (the saber's nauseating effect causes the giant to vomit a snow-man :lol: ).

Attempting to destroy Dizzy’s weapon, the Last Son disrupts space around her gauntlet. She manages to pull the weapon away in time, but suffers some damage herself. The Last Son then teleports in close and attempts to dispatch Akane. They trade blow after blow with one another. Their powers seemingly equal in strength, one cannot take advantage of the other. After his allies are defeated, the Last Son teleports away.

The heroes continue to the Nepalese village, where the team celebrates their expediation and combat victory. Afterwards, Dizzy cuddles with a fox-shaped Akane like a teddy bear and dozes off to sleep...

EPISODE 5. HOMEWARD BOUND

The team flies to San Francisco, along with Hans. Once past customs, they stop by McWrap to get American food. Arriving to Dizzy’s home, they are brought in front of Stanford and Priscilla for questions about their journey.

Dizzy asks for her guardians to contact the school board in an effort to see if she can get special courses that would allow for her to take time off for adventuring. Stanford mentions he will look into it.

As Hans has never been to San Francisco, the girls decide to take him on a tour of the city. Sight-seeing montage occurs…

That evening, Akane, Dizzy, and Hans go clubbing. While at the club, they have a brief encounter with several of Dizzy’s schoolmates: Tiff and Claude. Tiff attempts to steal Hans away, but is rebuffed and mocked by Akane. The group spends the night dancing to the songs of Nekkid Neku (with their hit song “Yiff Me Stupid”).

The next day, Dizzy is sent to school to inquire about her special courses. Akane accompanies her in the guise of a nerdy schoolgirl named Jenny.

EPISODE 6: BACK TO SCHOOL

Dizzy and “Jenny” are ambushed at school by questions from the gear-heads about where Dizzy has been. They hear rumors she is leaving school. Carlos (BC: Antonio Sabato Jr.) seems heartbroken. Before she can answer any further, Dizzy is called to the Principal’s Office.

Dizzy meets with Principal Stevens while Jenny gets a visitor’s pass. Stevens informs Dizzy that he will allow her to get special courses so long as all of her teachers sign off on it. He provides her with the necessary forms and sends her to collect signatures.

Making their way to Dizzy’s first class, she and Jenny are blocked by a massive crowd. Passing through the crowd, they discover Dexter and his sister, Deirdre, have locked off the science building to prevent Dizzy from getting her signatures and “leaving school.” He mocks her “limited genius” and inquires why she should get a pass while he must suffer by staying in school. Dexter is determined to show everyone that Dizzy is inferior by blasting her with a neural stunner cannon. Dizzy attempts to counter with an EMP blaster, but Deirdre interposes herself and blocks the beam.

Deirdre and Akane enter an impressive martial arts battle while Dexter and Dizzy blast each other with energy weapons. Eventually, Dizzy neutralizes Dexter’s weapons and immobilizes him with epoxy. Akane slams Deirdre to the ground, also covering her in epoxy.

Dizzy and “Jenny” spend the day gathering signatures from one teacher after another. They are happy to sign off as Dizzy is a model student and incredibly intelligent…. Until gym class…

The coach refuses to sign off until Dizzy has proven she can pass his physical examination. With that, he activates an obstacle course worthy of Ninja Warrior, with the signature sheet at the end. Dizzy heroically struggles with each obstacle and eventually succeeds in making it to the end… only to fall off the climbing rope after she has grabbed the sheet. The coach agrees to sign off, and an exhausted Dizzy is carried away by Jenny.

Returning home, Dizzy is helped into bed by Hans, who spends the next several hours massaging her tired muscles.
