That's the general consensus I've been hearing.

I watched it again, because I was writing a review, (which is here) and I just can't believe how absolutely it came apart in the third act, clumsy, patronizing, lecturing, when the first part had been the exact opposite of that.

I would say it was rushed. The Elite were around for a few days before having a throw down with Superman?

It certainly seems like an abrupt shift. I can't remember where I read it, if it was here or elsewhere, but someone posted something that struck me as plausible, that the DCAU movies have a maximum run times of about 75 minutes mandated in order to fit in a two-hour-with-commercials programming block.

I don't know if that's true or if it was at work here, but I do think the interaction prior to that scene was really top notch and the climax could have benefited from a little more easing into it. Mind, I don't think that would have fully fixed what I see as the failures of the ending, but it would have maybe helped soften the blow.

Have you read the comic it was based on? I ask because I haven't; were the problems a result of deviation from the comic plot or was it fundamentally a bit too "preachy"?

I think it's a bit better than the comic. In the movie, I felt the Elite are given more character and they come across as people who actually believe that they're doing the right thing. (Or could at least convince themselves of that at first.)

The writeup on Manchester Black on Wikipedia has a pretty decent summary.

I just checked Heroes & Villains. No wonder the Skull got his butt kicked. He's only PL 11 :D
