Beware the Batman on CN in 2013

DC Nation on CN

I was okay with it being CG.
I was okay-ish with Katana
I was okay with using some of the new villains
But I'm not okay with "There have been too many Joker stories" and "Alfred is packing heat."
All things considered, I'd rather have that Batgirl CG cartoon from the Batman: The Brave and the Bold finale
You must be proud, bold, pleasant, resolute,
And now and then stab, as occasion serves.

WB won't even give the go ahead on a sequel to the commercially successful Wonder Woman animated DVD. Do you really think they're going to go ahead with a Batgirl series?

I also was at least half-hoping the "Batgirl" segment of the final BATMAN:BATB series was for real. I actually thought it had panache as a trailer, though I prefer cartoon animation to the low-budgeted CGI available for Saturday morning fare.

Pity. A Batgirl series would have been a refreshing change, and would not need to be overly dark. But I imagine the numbers show that boys are less likely to watch a show with a female protagonist. Of course, I haven't always understood WB's creative decisions, especially of late.

All my best.

There's nothing I like more than retooling long-standing intellectual properties, especially big, sweeping, and controvertial retoolings. I'm the first to defend something from fanboy accusations of 'ruining my childhood', or similarly riddiculous hyperbole. I also fully support gun toting Alfred (he is a badass ex-military guy after all) and Professor Pyg as a major villain. So why does everything I see about this show make me cringe?

Additionally, if they wanted a grimdark Batman with an equally grimdark sidekick, why Katana? This would have been the perfect opportunity for Cassie's small screen debut.

In the animated series, Alfred was a former MI-6 agent

Following Infinite Crisis, elements of Alfred's Pre-Crisis backstory got woven in to his past. One of those elements was his military record. Before that I think he was a retired actor or something.

Alfred's convoluted backstory due to retconning is almost as bad as Donna Troy's.

Have to admit, nobody'd think to look for the bad ass secret agent living his retirement as a butler ;~)

It seems like they'd taken Wintergreen, Deathstroke's former Butler's backstory, and migrated it over to Alfred.

Actually no-there were indeed backstories for Alfred which included military service and even serving in British Intelligence going back quite some time. His original "origin" was that of a retired stage actor. In both cases, he felt obliged to take up the role of "gentleman's gentleman" after the death of his father (or maybe uncle), as Alfred's family had a long history of what they considered honorable and distinguished service to royalty and the elite.

But like most characters whose histories span eight decades, there have been numerous "official" versions of Alfred's life story before his time as Batman's aide-de-camp.

All my best.

I was actually really hoping the Batgirl preview from the BAT:BAB finale was for real as well. Actually looked really good.

I have to agree with Greycrusader about Alfred as I remember reading a story that had him serving as a member of the French Resistance during WWII. From memory that story dated from the 80s.
