Mythos Reborn: World of the Night Breed

Postby Horsenhero » Thu Jan 03, 2013 2:17 pm

In response to a request to run a game where super-powers existed in a "realistic" setting, I created a framework for a setting I called "The Night Breed". While the ideas I put forth weren't used, the setting itself has been percolating in my brain. Obviously what was set forth the first time was hurried and somewhat undeveloped, so I decided to flesh out the setting here.

Note: Like most written works, especially ones tied to a specific genre, the ideas here will, for the most part not be original. Only my spin on them is my own.

Note 2: Feedback and constructive critiques are welcome.

Powers & Principalities...how things came to be-

Once upon a time legends walked the earth. These legends possessed powers and abilities beyond those of their fellow men. They also, for good or ill could never seem to hide themselves from the conflicts of their fellow men, no matter how hard they might try. Supported by "Gods", "Demons" or "Wizards", they found themselves in conflict with monsters, armies and very often...each other.

As mankind rose further and further from its primitive roots, these legends became rarer and rarer. Finally, as rational thought and reasoning propelled the world's civilizations toward greater and greater heights, they disappeared altogether. As the age of science and reason progressed, only the echoes of the legendary past remained. Collected myths about heroes and demi-gods and fantastic stories of heroes, demonic beings and monsters penned by authors such as Shelley, Stoker, Lovecraft, Howard and Leiber.

Then, just shy of the mid-point of the 20th century mankind began to slip backward. Imagination was taken out of the hands of the masses and doled out by a few. Conservative fear of progress too fast began to take hold, as well as a panicked retreat from the responsibility of stewarding society. This awakened the higher powers to the world's dilemma.

Higher powers. Whether god or pantheons of gods or simply conceptual entities possessed of an alien consciousness, man is unlikely to know. Man was unaware of their actions and motivations in the early ages and remained unaware now, for these entities had evolved as rational life in the universe evolved. Entities became nuanced as intelligent life could discern nuance. As both creators and the created they immediately noticed the stumble in their own evolution. Mankind was running low on imagination, the very fuel of progress. Fear and greed grew in the fabric of societies and these atavistic concepts welcomed the increase in power and influence. Except for poets, artists, philosophers and politicians people were only vaguely aware the world was not what it once was. The metaphysical light was fading. Something had to be done.

The first inclination anyone trained to observe such things would have that the powers were moving came in the fading days of World War II. A Chinese man named Lo Xu Pan was being tortured to death in a Japanese Concentration camp. On the verge of death, his soul opened up to the influence of what his ancestors would have termed The Celestial Bureacracy. His essence merged with that of a dragon and the first legendary being of the new age was born.

His captors were not unbelieving when he escaped the camp. In fact, in hopes of forestalling their defeat at the hands of the gaijin powers, or even snatching victory still, they studied the events that led up to Lo's empowerment. A painful existence on the verge of death, rife with hallucinations allowed his mind to open to greater things the Shinto priests said. Unwilling to engage in a voluntary regime of torture against their own soldiers in hopes that one might experience the same sort of awakening, they scoured the hospitals, searching for their own hero. They found him in Yamaguchi Akira. Unfortunately, he would not be the answer they were looking for.

The Korean conflict saw more of these hybrids of humans and beings from myth. Vietnam even more. In fact wherever there was a war, there was painful death and wherever there was painful death, a very few survived. A small percentage of these survivors healed of their wounds and became one of these mythical beings given life. Finally, in the early 1970's, the governments of the world began to search in earnest for these legends brought to life. Some searched to control them. Some searched to destroy them. The Vatican Council pronounced them possessed by demons, the undead and orders to exorcise or destroy them became official church policy. While not as strident, the Mormon church, Orthodox Christian churches and Lutheran church adopted similar policies. Among Christian churches, the various Protestant churches remained ambivalent and the Gnostic Church welcomed the beings openly. As strident as the Catholics were the Muslims, and they were far more ready to resort to violence. The Hindu church had no official policy, while the Buddhists simply believed it was a new form of enlightenment.

By the mid 1970's, a mythic enhanced being by the name of Patrick O'Hearn had discovered he could sense others such as himself if he was in close enough proximity. Throwing his lot in with the ageless Lo Xu Pan, the Red Minister of Heaven, as he called himself or simply Minister for short, O'Hearn founded a hospital that would specialize in treating the critically wounded and terminally ill. Attached to the hospital was a hospice and a school for those patients that were ambulatory. Secretly, O'Hearn and the Minister were trying to save their fellow 'undead' from death or worse.

The hospital complex thrived under the leadership of the two men, though their styles were in stark contrast. O'Hearn was a friendly, listening ear. A confidant. Everyone's favorite uncle and caring physician. Lo Xu Pan by contrast was a taciturn, strict disciplinarian. A militarist with little time for emotional displays. Still, O'Hearn's idealism and Lo Xu Pan's organizational skills meshed together to make the men a formidable pair.

Eventually, a patient, one of their undead "cousins" heard them discussing the fate of their kind in this modern world and from this debate, the name they would refer to themselves by was coined. It happened so quickly, even the men involved barely remembered the debate.

O'Hearn: "I can't understand it Lo Pan. I speak with the researchers working for the military and they refer to our kind as if we aren't human. It's like it's permissible to vivsect us because we're a different breed."

Lo Xu Pan: "We are a different breed Patrick. A breed they fear. A breed they would exterminate. A breed they would keep hidden in the dark, a night breed."

A Night Breed. The patient liked the sound of it and began referring to their kind that way. Soon it caught on and on a blog it was inadvertantly revealed to the world, where the romance and fear conjured up by the title catapulted it into the popular lexicon. They weren't mythic creatures, or demonspawn or undead, they were...

Night Breed!

Clara O'Hearn Memorial Clinic aka The Castle of Bones-

In the mid 1970's Patrick O'Hearn and Lo Xu Pan founded the Clara O'Hearn Memorial Clinic, a hospital that specialized in researching and treating rare, painful, fatal illnesses, as well as treating critical injuries. In order to be equally accessible from anywhere in the continental United States, the clinic was founded in Aurora, Colorado. Of course the money that paid for the clinic was stolen from the Chinese government of Xiang Kai Xek before it fell to the communists under the leadership of Mao Zhe Dong. Needless to say, both the remaining Chinese royalists and the newer communist regime bear the thief, Lo Xu Pan, ill will. Still, Lo and Patrick have nurtured that money into a vast financial empire, all centered on paying for the activities at the clinic.

While the clinic does good work in the field of research into fatal illnesses, that is merely a secondary goal. The primary goal is to find individuals in such chronic debilitating pain they are about to open themselves to a metaphysical evolution. the primary goal is to locate new undead, new nightbreed. Of course most every patient perishes in the hospice on site. Once again, the hospice does excellent work in the field of dignified terminal care.

Patrick O'Hearn is heartbroken over every death. Lo Xu Pan views the lost as the price paid for saving the newest of their kind. Of course only a few actually stay around on the campus to assist in the birth of the Minister's nation, or O'Hearn's publicity exercise. In fact, in reponse to Lo Xu Pan's self aggrandizing title of the Red Minister of Heaven, one of the patients who changed into a Night Breed nicknamed him Saint Patrick. The name stuck.

Of course over time, the clinic, while officially named for O'Hearn's mother, gained its own nickname. A Night Breed named Alejandra Ramona Letitia Marquez sneered at Lo Xu Pan when he revealed his desire for a kingdom of the undead, of the night breed. She also scoffed at O'Hearn's desire for heroic undead to mitigate the fear humans had of the metaphysically evolved. As she left, her bone cancer cured by her new condition, she let them know exactly how she felt.

"This place? This imagined starting point of our grand and glorious future? It is your palace Minister. A fortress built on the suffering and death of innocent people sacrificed to your dreams...

a Castle of Bones."

Failures, Plots & Schisms-

In 1979 Islamic Revolution swept through the middle eastern nation of Iran. The Shah was forced from power and the embassy of the United States, the most powerful ally of the Shah was attacked and the embassy personel taken hostage. President Jimmy Carter was under pressure to respond to this, but was hesitant to commit the US military, since the memory of the Vietnam conflict was still fresh in the minds of the US public. This was just the opportunity Patrick O'Hearn had been waiting for and the undead idealist contacted an acquaintance at the CIA to offer his services.

A small task force of Night Breed was clandestinely assembled for a secret rescue mission. After a short, boot camp-like training course, the force was flown into Iran by the military. The mission was an abject failure, the helicopters carrying the taskforce crashed on the embassy grounds and an explosion of nuclear proportions, ostensibly generated by an undead named Omar Khan destroyed a large section of Tehran and killed all the hostages, soldiers and undead involved. When word of what happened was revealed, public prejudice against Night Breed skyrocketed. Carters' decision cost him the chance at a second presidency.

O'Hearn and Lo Xu Pan were certain the failure had been part of a CIA plot to discredit a power the agency couldn't control, but proving those allegations would be near impossible. The disaster was all the more disheartening because Pope John-Paul II had, just the year before eased the official Papal position on the undead. That too was not without repercussions, because rumor had it, it caused a schism within the Council of Bishops and thus within the church. Much like the CIA conspiracy theory, nothing could be proven.

In 1980, Lo Xu Pan decided he could no longer work with Patrick O'Hearn, as their ideologies had drifted too far apart. Taking those undead loyal to him, the Minister emigrated to France to start his own organization for the empowerment of the Night Breed. After some negotiations with the French government, L'Institute Metaphysique was founded. While the schism within the ranks of the undead was tragic, it wasn't deemed irreparable. Little did any of the people involved dream that soon things would get worse and even then, there were forces in the world awakened or re-awakened with the Night Breed that would test them and the whole world.

The Return of the Fae-

The first indication any in the undead community had that things in the world were changing farther was a bloody warning left on the grounds of the Clara O'Hearn Memorial Clinic. The head of Alejandra Marquez mounted bloodily on a pike was discovered one morning. The night breed who had coined the nickname "The Castle of Bones" for the clinic was slain. Saint Patrick tried as best he could to keep this a secret from the majority of the staff and patients, but rumors of the discovery raged like wildfire through the hospital campus. More worrisome was the fact no clues about what had led to her murder and how the killers had been able to place her severed head on the grounds without alerting security could be found. With no other options, O'Hearn alerted his former partner Lu Xo Pan of the incident.

The Red Minister of Heaven, having just formed his Institute Metaphysique lacked the manpower for a large scale investigation into events, but did task one of his newly discovered undead to see what he could find out. Ulrich Hammerstein was an undead gifted with the power of near physical indestructibility, so he made the perfect investigator. Six months later, he reported a startling, frightening discovery. The coming of the undead was apparently not the only change in the world...the Unseelie and Seelie Courts of the Fae had returned to the world.

The awakening of metaphysical powers had indeed reopened the portals between the realms adjacent to earth. Celtic realms like Faerie and Annwn, Nordic realms like Alfheim as well as the Spirit Realms of Shinto theology had opened to earth. The Unseelie Court, displeased with the inadvertant co-opting of the name of their great fortress by mortals had tracked down and slain the person responsible. While currently no more aggression was being engaged in, both the Minister and Saint Patrick knew the return of Faerie Lords, Brollochan's, Will O' Wisps, Trolls, Goblins and the inumerable inhabitants of the coterminus worlds could only spell trouble for both man and Night Breed.

Little did either suspect how strongly the metaphysical forces had entrenched themselves in the world, their focus having been on their own undead kind. For good or ill, with the general public as yet unaware, both men knew they were witnessing a full fledged...

Return of the Supernatural.

Vampires, Vampyres, Mummies...or undead and Undead-

One of the most confusing issues facing the Night Breed and society as a whole is the return of actual Undead. Unlike the "undead" of the Night Breed, true undead have not returned to a true semblance of life. Rather the same rules, strengths and weaknesses that governed them in the ages past still apply. This is not a problem when dealing with mindless, animate corpses like Zombies. Zombies are simply a plague brought on by wild magic or a curse, or they are the servants of less ethical voodoo practitioners. There might be Night Breed whose abilities animate the dead, but those corpses would cease to function once the Night Breed was not concentrating upon them.

Of all the confusing issues surrounding undead, Vampires are among the worst. Thanks to novelists romanticizing the notion of vampirism, a greater number of Night Breed than normal change into vampiric beings when they empower. These Night Breed vampires, or vampyres as they refer to themselves, have greater than human strength, speed, charisma and the appetite for blood of the true vampire, but do not possess the greater powers. True vampires remain the product of an infectious curse and excommunication by the church. Atheists cannot be turned into true vampires, they simply die. True vampires are universally malignant, malicious entities. They cannot help it, since the curse of the church has linked their souls to the concept of Satan. The general public is unaware of the nuances involved in the differences between the aspects however and all vampiric beings are subject to the same prejudices, whether positive or negative. Vampires and vampyres are aware of each other though and the elder, evil vampires take personal offense at the existence of their Night Breed "cousins", going to great lengths to destroy or enslave them.

In Egypt, once the true undead revealed themselves, the Islamist, Jewish and Christian holy men that reside there took it upon themselves to consecrate every mummified corpse they could find to prevent the rise of an undead pharaoh. Unfortunately, forgotten were the Nubian Pharaohs in the part of Africa which is in modern times, Sudan. Sure enough, the Pharaoh Shakatak rose from his crypt and established a power base, a modern day Kush. Like myth would indicate, the Mummy Pharaoh is a powerful sorcerer and possesses superhuman physical attributes.

Also returned, though to a more nomadic existence is Selk, the King Scorpion accompanied by his Queen, Shesh I. In some ways, despite not having the freedom to consolidate a base of power as Shakatak has done, King Scorpion is of greater concern to the authorities aware of his rise. Thanks to his legendary status in pre-dynastic egypt and the charisma and mystique he carries, there are people worldwide who follow him.

As of yet, no Aztec or Mayan mummy has arisen, but the Night Breed and other undead feel it is only a matter of time. In the Americas, the majority of undead are imported vampires or ghosts. While the general public is still largely ignorant of the rise of both the Night Breed and that of the True Undead, the governments of the world are more and more likely to investigate reports of either, no matter how slim the evidence. At this point in time those in power do not deny it...

the awakened dead are out there.

Skin Changers, Practitioners of Magic & the University-

As the rest of the Night Breed and Undead communities watched each other with distrust, another set of factions rose quietly. During the ancient ages, skinchangers were common in one form or another. Natural skinchangers in the western world hid their natures from their more static brethren. In the east, especially Japan skin changers tended to prefer their animal forms. As magic faded from the world and metaphysical powers vanished, the bloodlines of skin changers stabilized and only those that withdrew to the fading realms kept their dual natures.

As metaphysical powers returned, the bloodlines reawakened, along with the blood memory of what they were. Almost immediately the skin changers turned to their primals, the most powerful of their kind to guide them, just as they had in ancient times. Almost every major animal type is represented in the skin changers, but a few have garnered a worse reputation. Werewolves in the west and the Sharkmen of Polynesia specifically. As it turns out those bloodlines are the most vulnerable to an insidious curse that causes the bloodline to become tainted and homicidal. Knowing this and knowing that these diseased individuals form the basis for most public opinion, skin changers opted to remain concealed.

Natural skin changers are just a single type of skin changer. The diseased skin changers can pass on both the curse of madness and the ability to assume a half form in a non-fatal attack. Fortunately attacks are rare. The other types of skin changers are those who use magic to alter their forms. Ulfsarks and Bearsarks of the Norse and Saxon tradition use enchanted hides of wolves and bears to change their shape and even without the change, adopt some of the more desirable traits of the animals. Native American skin walkers and wizards who follow the animist tradition of Taliesin can change into multiple animal forms, but lack the supernatural power of the totemic skin changers' half form. Japanese Hengeyokai kept their animal forms as their primary forms and when the metaphysical world separated from the mortal world ages ago, chose to stay in Chikushudo, the realm of spirit animals. As a result their physical forms are less powerful than western skin changers, but their spiritual powers are much greater.

Just as the skin changers had returned, so too did sorcery and wizardry. Those who practised true Wicca, Voodoo or other mystic traditions were the first to notice. When the lake appeared again around Glastonbury in Britain and the Isle of Avalon once more appeared, even the government had to take notice. Still, Avalon appears rarely, as does the glorious spiritual version of Caerlion-on-Usk, in France, Aix au Chapelle and in Denmark, mighty Heorot can occasionally be seen. These are the noticeable signs of magic returning to the world. Like the skin changers, those mages who withdrew from the mortal realm remember their power and can teach those who have the talent.

To this end, to instruct modern practitioners of magic and to instill a sense of community and safety in the skin changers, the two disparate groups united and formed a modern university. In Gunnison, Colorado in the United States, they founded Black Canyon University. The university is a private university with some 5000 students, 2000 of which are either skin changers or magic practitioners. Of course, in the modern world even a haven for their kinds could not exist without profit, so the majority of the students are normal people, unsuspecting of the university's secondary purpose aside from a center of higher learning.

Concealed from Night Breed, Undead and natural humans alike the primacy and council of sorcery train in secret...

a secret the skin changers and sorcerers go to great lengths to keep.

One more entry and this setting will have its' framework finished. All that's left to cover are the other races of the supernature, the elves, trolls and dwarves and I'll have worked this thing out of my system. for those of you that have been reading this, in advance of that final essay, I say thanks for putting up with my rambling.

Dwarves, Trolls & the sunken lands-

The last thing the undead, night breed and the primacy wuould want is for powerful enchanted items to make it back into the world. Unfortunately for them, with the return of the Fae came their darker cousins, the Dwarves and Trolls. Trolls for all they are powerful, obsessive and below average intelligence, especially by human standards, are master smiths. Fire and cold do not harm them overmuch, but the light of the sun can turn them to stone, so they live in vast underground caverns. Despite their skill with the forge, the Trolls are a surly race, almost universally bitter over their twisted forms, ugliness and stupidity. Trolls are one of the few races just smart enough to realize how stupid they are and it plays havoc with their attitudes.

Sharing their underground kingdom, but not as ugly, far more intelligent and craftier are the Dwarves. Led by their king, Evadeam they labor at the forge and construct sculptures and artifacts of great power and beauty. Unfortunately, besides skill, the defining trait of the Dwarves is greed. Dwarves hoard their magic and their wealth, paranoid that others want to steal their treasures. They are unwelcoming to visitors and drive a hard bargain for any treasures sought or even constructed on contract. Dwarven men and women like to trade for the favors of beautiful members of the fairer races. To lure a human to be is a victory. To lure one of the Fae, the fair folk into carnal relations is a coup, an absolute triumph.

Even more secretive than either Trolls or Dwarves are the sea folk. Living in the sunken kingdoms of Ys, Lyonesse and Atlantis, the sea folk avoid all others for reasons unknown. Sometimes they will drive their cattle onto land to graze or a water horse will abduct a foolish rider. Each undersea kingdom is independent and is uncooperative with the others. The inhabitants of each kingdom have their own unique morphology. Atlanteans are Tritons, true merfolk. The citizens of Ys are spectral in nature and the denizens of Lyonesse appear as mortal men with blued lips and pale skin, as if from drowning. It is rumored that the sea kingdoms have treasures even the Dwarves would be jealous of, but since they rarely interact with the landwalkers, no one living knows for certain.

The one thing Trolls, Dwarves and sea folk all have in common is a merciless hatred of True Undead. They are also suspicious of this new, varied type of creature, the Night Breed. Since the Night Breed have only existed for a short period, the hidden races are witholding judgement...for now. Still, these folks agree on a single desire...

safety lies in being no more than a rumor.

And unless for some reason somebody has a question...that's it. I may come back later and list the template abilities for some or all of the groups described here, or not. I think I got this bug out of my head. I hope those who read it enjoyed it.

As it so happens some ideas on further fleshing out this setting have started to bubble up in my mind, so despite thinking I was through with the basic layout, more is coming. To be specific:

 Patrick O'Hearn's "First Responders". In 2011 the aged founder of the Clara O'Hearn Memorial Clinic has been forced by his advancing years to abandon field duty himself, but that doesn't mean he's given up the mission.

 The government agencies tasked with hunting and cataloging the metaphysical powers in the world.

 The metaphysical enemies of mankind and the Night Breed. Conquerors, criminals and terrorists local and global.

 L'Institute Metaphysique. More on Lo Xu Pan's enterprise in France and the ongoing rivalry between the Institute and the O'Hearn Memorial Clinic.

 Anything else I can think of as the inspiration strikes.

L'Institute Metaphysique & the Fantastic Legion-

Lo Xu Pan's break with the Clara O'Hearn Memorial Clinic was far from painless. Despite Patrick O'Hearn's desire to let his longtime friend go with no bad blood, there were quite a number among the Night Breed that viewed the departure as a betrayal. From 1980 to 1982, while the Red Minister of Heaven was waiting for his promised facility to be built, he was the subject of several assassination attempts. Everyone involved is certain that at least two such attempts were initiated by former patients of his, however the reaction of the awakening otherworldly forces to his arrival in France complicated things. The entire experience embittered Lo Xu Pan toward his former charges and instilled in him a growing contempt for Patrick O'Hearn and his inability to keep "his people" under control.

Still, in August of 1982, L'Insitute Metaphysique opened its doors as the first publicly acknowledged facility dedicated to the research into and management of the undead. As part of the bargain Lo Xu Pan made, he had to require any Night Breed that came to his facility for assistance to make themselves available to the French Expeditionary Military Services. These Night Breed soldiers were put into their own unit, which was dubbed in the press "The Fantastic Legion". Almost immediately, the Night Breed were deployed in hot zones that had French forces in them. The use of Night Breed soldiers was a success, of sorts. Many of the Night Breed troops possessed abilities that did not make them any more effective on the battlefield than regular soldiers. However, enough Night Breed with devastating powers and inhuman appearance were present that the unit was able to steamroll most conventional forces they ran up against.

Across the sea, Patrick O'Hearn was appalled by the use of Night Breed conscripts for military use and began a concerted campaign to lure the majority of them to the Castle of Bones. Inevitably this led to confrontations between Lo Xu Pan's people and O'Hearn's recruiters. These confrontations grew increasingly tense until in 1997, members of the Fantastic Legion attacked and killed a duo of civilian recruiters from O'Hearn's clinic. This would force Patrick O'Hearn to adjust his tactics somewhat as the Red Minister's forces had forever changed the dynamic of their relationship with their secretive brethren.

All the while, Lo Xu Pan became more and more embroiled in French politics, as the world reacted to an ever increasingly imperialistic France. With L'Institute Metaphysique decades ahead of any other public research effort into the Night Breed and other supernatural forces it seemed the French were well on their way to eclipsing the United States, Russia and China as the world's preeminent military power. In 2010 that changed when an expeditionary force of the Fantastic Legion deployed to Brazil was met by a mysterious strikeforce and decimated. Despite the violence of the battle, only three out of the 25 soldiers in the expedition were killed. Lo Xu Pan knew only one man would command such counter intuitive battlefield objectives; stop your enemy while leaving most alive.

Now the Red Minister of Heaven and Saint Patrick were not simply estranged comrades, they were actively engaged in a shadowy conflict for the "soul" of the Night Breed community.

The First Responders-

After the incident where the Fantastic Legion killed a pair of his recruiters, Patrick O'Hearn forbade his people from making too many forays into the field. Caution was now the watchword like never before since Lo Xu Pan knew their operation inside and out. He'd helped design it after all. Ironically, it was Lo Xu Pan who provided the answer to O'Hearn's dilemma.

In the early days of Night Breed recruitment, the Red Minister had always presumed that eventually a government force would become aware of their kind's existence and seek them out. He had postulated that this would lead to dangerous situations and at some point, violent conflict. To deal with the possibility, he had designed a training program to instruct the undead recruiters on how to fight. Patrick O'Hearn, worried about being perceived as terrorists if they were ever found out, refused to initialize the program. The events of 1997 changed that.

For the next several years the Night Breed of the Clara O'Hearn Memorial Clinic constructed a training facility hidden from the world of men. Since there was no way to build such a facility, much less have it active, on earth without one of the major governments becoming aware of its' existence, he contacted the reclusive Dwarves for help. After some negotiation, the Dwarf King, Evadeam agreed to construct the training camp in the ruins of Asgard. Ragnarok had left the Norse Gods sorely depleted, with the major players remaining being Balder, Hoder, Magni and Modi. The old gods were simply not in a position to oppose the construction and opted to ignore it as best they could.

So it was that within a few years the Castle of Bones was fielding a combat trained team of some of the most durable, combat ready Night Breed volunteers at their disposal. Still, operational procedure demanded they avoid Lo Xu Pan's french sponsored forces whenever they could. It wasn't until 2010, when the Fantastic Legion had fallen under attack by Death #3 in the Amazon rain forest that the two forces met. Unlike the Legion, which took every Night Breed from L'Institute Metaphysique into it's ranks for a predetermined time of service, the team from the O'Hearn Clinic was composed of volunteers who were combat capable even without training. They rescured the beleagured Legionnaires, losing on three lives in the process. Embarrassed by what happened the Legionary Captain claimed that the team from the Castle of Bones ambushed his men and tried to kill them.

The Red Minister and Saint Patrick were both alarmed at the escalating situation, but both had to follow their hearts, and the die was cast. From now on the two sides were enemies. The Red Minister did refuse to publicly reveal the true nature of O'Hearn's clinic though, for he remained bound by his word of honor, even if it did not play to his advantage. Not to mention that information gave him enough leverage over O'Hearn to keep the Night Breed from the United States from becoming too active in striking out against his Institute.

O'Hearn's people meanwhile are concentrating on locating and socializing all the Night Breed they can and protecting society against threats that conventional law-enforcement has little understanding of. Since they are based out of hospital, they call themselves First Responders...an homage to emergency crews everywhere.
