Goals of Pokemon Trainers
In the world of Pokemon not everyone aspire to become Pokemon masters, beat the Elite Four, catch all species of Pokemon, or even collect Gym Badges. In fact, everyone have their own goals.

Nearly every child between ages 10 to 13 journey out to become Pokemon trainers, this journey signifies the transition from childhood to adulthood, as they learn how to train Pokemon as well as learn who they themselves are.
This journey not only teach young trainers the necessary skills to survive in the world, but also give them a coming-of-age introspection into themselves.

So as you can imagine, the goals of Pokemon trainers are as varied as the trainers themselves. Some seek to catch rare bug-type or water-type Pokemon, others want to explore and travel far and wide, while still others just want to meet new people and Pokemon.

Not every trainer begins their journey by being given a Pokedex from a Pokemon professor and asked to fill it. Those are the rare few.
No, most are just given their first Pokemon, usually from their parents, and decide to head out into the world.

You should try to give your character a goal, but you needn't give him/her one from the start. Rather you should pick a goal when your character have an idea of what he/she wants to do.
My point is, when you do pick a goal for your character, this goal doesn't need to be "to become the greatest trainer ever" or "gotta catch 'em all".
