Re: Marvel Ultimate Sourcebook (New Plot Hooks)

Really? I didn't think anybody else cared! Thank You!

This project took me three years really. It was what I did when I couldn't stand to study Torts or Crim Law for another minute in law school. It was my escape.

I know the Ultimate universe is disliked by many people, but I kind of see what I have done here as "Marvel Paragons."

I'm likely to rip this off wholesale at some point.

I like the Ultimates, because I like the (relative) lack of continuity baggage (though they managed to create several such issues within the first 24 months of the line by trying to reference other Ultimate characters), as well as the sense that super powers are "new" to the world. I also think that, with some exceptions you've already noted, the writing and storytelling is pretty decent. The art, too.

I know people who're kind of offended at how, for example, Nick Fury and Hank Pym are portrayed. While I may not like every creative or editorial decision, I feel that if you're going to reboot a universe, some sacred cows are gonna have to be tipped in the process. Which is why I stole from Planetary and made the FF horrific bad guys in the Marvel/DC/Misc mash-up I am currently running :) Speaking of which (tangentially), what did you think of Ultimate Doomsday?

Anyway keep up the good work!
"Persistence is often met with vengeance!"

Inhumans (Template)

Protection 5
– Exposure to the terrigen mists give all inhumans at least protection 5.
– Some inhumans’ mutations grant them much greater protection

Knowledge Technology 7
Disable Device 7
– Attilan society is much more advanced than human, as a result even the untrained understand technology to a greater extent than most humans.
– Inhumans may use their ranks in knowledge technology to make computer use checks.
– They have no ranks in computer use as human level computers are archaic by their standards.

Equipment
– Most inhumans do not leave Attilan, but should they venture out they may have ranks in “device as equipment.”
– For instance, Crystal carried a device that healed Johnny Storm of broken bones quickly.

Mystique has the ability to change her shape into other humanoid forms. On one occasion, in Ult X-Men Annual 2, Mystique is shown taking the shape of a giant creature with a gaping mouth of large teeth, horns and tentacles. This suggests that she is able to take the form of imaginary or mythical creatures. Also, while in this form she exhibits enhanced strength, holding Charles Xavier aloft with one hand. This suggests she can take on the some of the characteristics of these forms as well. This is one of her metamorph forms. The build allows for four more, but I did not stat them out.

The two lived truly charmed lives and none of the machinations of the Austria-Hungarian Empire touched them. In fact nothing of significance really happened to the girls until 1914 when both their world and the entire European Continent would be thrown into chaos.

In June of 1914 Irene began to have strange vivid dreams. The dreams troubled Irene to such a point that she feared she would go mad. During the he first few months she knew little rest and dreaded succumbing to sleep. She lived in this state of exhaustion until she had the dream that would change everything. In it she saw an automobile driving in reverse. The gears on the machine locked up and the car came to a jarring halt. As the driver struggled with the shift, a short swarthy man approached the vehicle. In his hand she saw a pistol. The man knocked another bystander out of the way and fired several shots into the back of the vehicle. The first shot struck a uniformed man in the neck and another hit his female companion in the stomach. Irene awoke screaming. She would not know the true significance of the dream until several days later when the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. Irene told the only person she could trust, her sister. Isabelle, who was always protective of Irene, worried that her sister was going insane.

Isabelle convinced Irene to go and talk to their uncle, Alfred Adler, who was becoming well known for his work in the fledgling field of psychotherapy. The girls kept the visits secret as they knew that their father was opposed to Alfred’s views.

Over the next few weeks, Irene had regular visits with Alfred. The dreams however, got no better. Alfred, who had always had a rivalry with Irene’s father, was determined to help her. Alfred believed that if he could help Sigmund’s daughter he would prove to Sigmund that his views on the human psyche had merit. He decided to try hypnotherapy. Although he did not entirely believe that hypnotherapy was valuable, he was willing to try anything to prove his brother wrong.

As Irene was about to be hypnotized, she became extremely nervous. Isabelle was called into the room to reassure her sister. Isabelle held Irene’s hand as her uncle continued. Eventually Irene succumbed to the hypnosis and in that moment she and her sister’s lives were forever altered.

What Irene had not understood was that she was a mutant. Her powers had slowly begun to manifest themselves. Her subconscious mind had been suppressing the powers, until now. The girl’s powers sprung to the forefront and manifested in a burst of potential.

Irene’s dreams had been brief glimpses of the greater power to come. She was psychically traveling out of time to the future and viewing events there. It will never be known what her power may have evolved into if left to develop naturally. As it was, when they were unleashed, Irene’s power effectively pulled her and her sister, who held her hand, out of time.

In that moment Isabelle had merely fainted. She would not know what had truly happened until years later. Her sister’s experience was far worse. Although both sisters had been separated from the effects of time, Irene had the misfortune of being able to sense it. She could see into the future. More accurately, she must see into the future. Her sense of sight was being constantly bombarded with both perceptions of her current time and the future. She lapsed into a comma, her mind unable to process both stimuli.

The event caused predicable repercussions in the family. Sigmund completely severed any ties with his brother and moved the girls out of Vienna. Irene was comatose for nearly eight months. When she finally awoke it was not a happy occasion, but a gruesome one.

It was Isabelle who found her sister early in the morning. She lay crying in a puddle of her own blood. When Isabelle saw the source of the blood she gasped. Irene had gouged out her own eyes. Irene babbled incoherently. Isabelle managed to make out only a single sentence. Irene had said that if she could not stop the visions of the future, she could at least destroy her view of the present.

The next ten years passed as normally as could be expected. Isabelle met and married. She endured the tragic news that she could not bear children. She took care of her sister loyally, despite her husband not approving of Irene.

Soon, Isabelle came to a grudging realization: she was not aging. At first, she had thought it was merely good luck to look so youthful. But every time she passed a mirror, or saw female former classmates, she knew the truth. Irene still looked sixteen and she eighteen. Something had happened that day when Irene had gone mad, she sensed it on a fundamental level. Fearing what might happen if her secret or Irene’s be found, she forged her husband’s signatures on some bank document withdrew as much money as she could. Together, she and Irene would flee to America. When they were nearly ready to go, Irene refused to leave without her journals. When Isabelle realized that these journals contained prophecies of the future, she realized that they must not be left to fall into the wrong hands. She took them with her.

Over the next fifty years, Isabelle realized that she could not age. In fact, her inability to bear children had something to do with this. Any change she made to her body, a tattoo or something more extreme like cutting off a finger, would, given enough time, slowly revert back to the moment Irene’s powers manifested themselves. Even Irene’s eyes had eventually grown back. Isabelle would forever remember the first day she had to sew her sister’s eyes closed. The thread needed to be replaced occasionally, but when it was in the lids they did not heal around it. This fact had given Isabelle dark thoughts about driving a stake through her own heart and leaving it there, but she knew could not abandon Irene nor could she harm her, so she endured immortality.

She endured it and unfortunately she did so alone. Irene’s insanity manifested itself in a very specific way. In her mind Irene was perpetually 16. Not a perpetual Victorian young woman, but rather the product of the current day. Her view of the future allowed her attitudes to remain contemporary. She could hold no memory longer than a year or so in the past. She was a girl who could see the future, but not the past.

In 1999, Isabelle’s worst fears happened. As she and Irene were out for dinner a man appeared in front of them with a gun. He demanded that she give him her money. Isabelle was not a bit concerned as she had studied many forms of combat over her more than ten decades of life. She moved to take the gun from him, but somehow he moved more quickly than she thought imaginable. He shot her through the heart. She woke up in a morgue about a day later. Apparently the bullet had passed through and she had not yet been cut open for the autopsy. She got out of the hospital easily enough and returned home.

When she got there, Isabelle realized that Irene had not been home. Isabelle almost never read Irene’s journals, but she realized that they could help her find her sister. When she went to find the journal, she found it sitting out on Irene’s desk. Isabelle was surprised by its location, as Irene never left them out.

Isabelle began to flip through the journal and found a letter. The letter was from Irene and dated the same day. In the letter Irene explained what had happened, that she knew Isabelle would be shot. She also explained that she would be taken, by the man. Irene did not include why a man would kidnap a 16 year old girl, but Isabelle feared she knew. Irene told Isabelle not to worry about her, that in the end she would be reunited, but not for many years.

Tears flooded Isabelle’s eyes as she read the last line in the letter. “Some things in future are not definite, not fixed. They can be changed. Other things are set points and cannot be manipulated. The coming terrible events we must endure are immutable. Do not weep, there is no cause for weeping. It is my Destiny.”

Powers:

Destiny’s powers are a blessing and a curse. As a result of premature manifestation her powers caused her to be ripped from time. While she is not entirely sure how this happened, or even how it is possible, she no longer ages. She cannot be killed permanently, she will always rise from the dead. She and her sister have hypothesized that if the instrument of death was left in the wound causing death it might prevent the resurrection, as the thread in her eyes is not forced out. They have never tested such a theory.

Additionally, she can see the future, but, unlike the traditional effect, her precognition is constantly in effect. She receives visual stimuli from both the present moment and the future at the same time. This causes her to see a confusing overlapping of events as they occur and as they will occur. As a result she sews her eyes closed. She has learned to interact with the world working on her perception of a few moments in the future. This gives her great advantages in combat, as she knows what will happen before it does. Her power ranges from, at a minimum, a few seconds in the future to as far off as several years. She loses control of her precognition the further from the present she tries to look, only gaining random, but often significant, snippets of information from the distant future.

Her ability to interact with the world disqualifies her for a blindness drawback. I have named her ability to see the immediate future “foresight.” It gives her all of her combat feats and traits as well as bonuses to skills like notice and saves like reflex.

Personality:

As stated above Destiny suffers from unstable mental health. Her condition manifests in many ways, the foremost is her inability to recall personal memories more distant than about one year in the past. Her personality is that of a perpetual 16 year old girl. Her powers give her the ability to gather contemporary information. This means that she has not merely stagnated as a girl from the turn of the twentieth century, but rather she thinks she is a girl of 16 born sixteen years in the past from whatever the date. When questioned as to her origins, she will equivocate saying she does not remember her parents. If pressed she will become sullen refusing to answer any more questions. Whether she constructs an imaginary past for herself as a coping mechanism is unclear.

As she has been apart from her sister for longer than one year, she no longer remembers her. However, she has a subconscious desire to replace the relationship and is attracted to young woman emotionally and occasionally physically. Her relationship with Mystique found its animus in this desire.

It is important to note that Destiny’s personal memories expire, but her other knowledge of the past remains. As a result she will often know much about the past generally. She does not dwell on where such knowledge comes from.

Aside from this significant psychosis Destiny’s fragile mental state manifests in many other ways. She might exhibit many other symptoms such as depression or mania. Her visions haunt her and she obsessively records these in a series of journals. Since the time she separated from her sister, she destroys a journal as soon as she fills it, so that it will not fall into the wrong hands.

Powers:

When Ricky manifests his detonation powers, his body detonates as well.

This means that when Detonator uses his Explosion power, either through his focused explosion or explosion, his physical form is fragmented in a dispersion of energy. Detonator can reform himself anywhere within 300 feet. In the interim he exists in an imperceptible particulate ghost-like form. While he is in this state, as he effectively has no body or organs, he must rely on his ranged mental sense.

This is represented by an area attack which is chained to insubstantial and concealment. Afterwards, he teleports to any place within his range. This teleportation triggers his power loss on the insubstantial and concealment representing him reforming.

Background:

Ricky Gibson’s mutant power to detonate his own body emerged when he was 16; unfortunately unable to control his power, he soon drew the unwelcome attention form a mob who intended to kill him. Luckily before they could do so, fellow mutants Charles Xavier and Magneto intervened, driving the mob off and offering him sanctuary, and better yet, hope. He joined the Brotherhood of Mutants, moving to their San Francisco lodgings where he was taught to control his abilities. After a time, anti-mutant protests caused the group to relocate to the Savage Lands. Ricky, at Magneto’s urging, left behind his former name and was dubbed Detonator. Detonator chose to follow Magneto’s teachings rather than Xavier’s when the two split. This led to him eventually attacking the Pentagon. In the canon, he was never seen again.

NOTE: This build represents my interpretation of the character. He was never developed enough to show any details about his powers.
