New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Established in 2002, the European Academy is governed by the French Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. As per the Vindication Charter, the five founding United Nations members would oversee the administration of the trio of academies—although each school would be built in neutral territory. Due to the location of an existing United Nations Headquarters, Vienna was chosen as the site for the European School.

Many have attested that Geneva, Switzerland would have been a much better choice, given that the city is home to the European Headquarters for the United Nations; cities like London, Vienna, The Hague and Copenhagen have only been home to venues and agencies. However, Switzerland did not become a full member of the United Nations until 2002—after the school was founded. Still, given the scope of Europe’s Neo-Sapien populace, the United Nations has announced intentions to build campuses in London and The Hague, near said offices.

Typically, the New Vindicators Academy accepts any and all Neo-Sapiens between the ages of 13 and 18—however, exceptions have been made for non-NS youth or Neo-Sapiens who manifested their abilities early in life. Not only do students receive a formal education, they are trained in the use of their powers as well as self-defense—allowing them to better protect themselves and loved ones from opponents of Neo-Sapiens.

The school's main entrance is a set of double doors found at Y-12. Once inside, guests can make out the front office (run by Tyson Noble--sort of a jack-of-all-trades for the school). The administrators, Newton and Fischer, have their offices here. There is a main office where they receive guests and an inner office where they can keep whatever they need stored away.

On the other side of the main office are the elevators that descend into the sub level. Up from that is Miss Yavorshak's office, but you haven't met her yet (though a few of you have been demanding her). Beyond that are some of the lecture halls for this department. Each teacher is given their own classroom to outfit as they wish. Each room has cabinet space for them to store any learning materials they may use.

The door marked "L" at G-6 is accessible by the faculty. Here lies the teacher's lounge as well as the entrance to the kitchen where Siege normally is. A counter divides his kitchen from the cafeteria where students can order almost anything.

The greyed out area is for all of the things needed to make the elevators go. I'm not entirely sure what all that requires but... here you go: an all purpose utility room.

On the southern side of the building are elevators that service the upper floors as well as the stairwell that leads to the other classrooms, dormitories and faculty apartments.

Industrial trades workshops are located to the north wall of the building while the computer lab is in the northwestern corner. Here, internet-ready computers are accessible for the students. The Syllabus
Despite that the United Nations defines its official languages as Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish and Russian, all students enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe are required to learn English for communicating with representatives of other nations.

All Freshman must choose a class from each group and must enroll in a foreign language of their choosing (provided they already speak English). Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors must enroll in any six classes of their choosing per semester, for which they will earn dual credit: their classes count towards their high school diploma and towards a university education.

While students will find themselves presented with the normal curriculum young people their age face, they can also be approved for special electives. These range from special workshops dealing with the finer points of their abilities or classes designed to better hone their skills.

For instance, students with an ability to manipulate gravity, magnetic waves or inertia may have Tactical Telekinesis suggested to them whilst students blessed with area-affecting abilities may be urged to attend courses on Environmental Manipulation.

Students showing an aptitude for leadership may be taught the finer points of diplomacy and conversational skills. Others may be training to pilot unique vehicles or be allowed to take classes on network espionage. Special field trips to Greenland or the Tara River Canyon may be designed to teach survival skills.

During their first year, freshmen are taught to control their powers—regardless of how much prior experience they have with their abilities. At the start of each year, two sophomores are selected by the faculty to compete against each other in the Sophomore Blitz. Typically, these two students are the two who showed the most growth during their first year.

They then choose teams from amongst the remainder of the sophomore class and battle each other in a state-of-the-art holographic environment simulator: the Wreck Room. This ceremony is the inaugural session: all sophomores, juniors and seniors are required to attend a weekly training exercise in this chamber. Here, teamwork and self-defense are taught through a battery of exercises created by their instructors.


History
Thus far, the New Vindicators Academy of Europe has had a somewhat uneventful history.


The Faculty
The New Vindicators Academy of Europe is staffed by great men and women from across the globe. Mainly, these counselors have been heroes who have defended their homeland at one period or another.

Due to the Vindication Charter, the European Academy (and possibly academies) will be administrated by two Europeans—one representing the French Republic and the other appointed by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In 2002, Richard Vogel and Louise Beltron were appointed to these positions. However, Headmistress Belton committed suicide before her first year at the school concluded. By the beginning of the next year, an American, Alan Altair, had been hired to fill her vacancy.

In May of 2008, both headmasters lost their lives in the Apocatastasis War and the United Nations scrambled to find two replacements. Ultimately, England promoted Sir Isaac Newton while Doctor Bethany Fischer represented France.

After the Apocatastasis War, many members of the faculty began serving dual roles: they are both educators and Vindicators.

    Anders, Corey: In 2007, Mister Anders graduated from the New Vindicators Academy of Europe. Today he serves as both the mathematics instructor and one of the Vindicators.
    Benson, William: Formerly a hunter for the Thule Society, Mister Benson is an archaeologist and teaches anthropology and archaeology.
    Bradley, Evan: The current history teacher graduated from the school in 2007.
    • Carmichael, Levi: A recent addition to the staff, Levi came to the school after escaping from an American internment camp. Able to control bugs, Mister Carmichael is now the school’s life sciences teacher.
    Catargi, Iulia: Hailing from Romania, Miss Catargi has the ability to siphon the strength and stamina of anyone she touches and add it to her own.
    • Fischer, Bethany: Though an American, Doctor Fischer was chosen to represent the French government as their administrator. She has the distinction of being the only human on staff.
    • Fitzroy, Randolph: An Irish Nephilim, Mister Fitzroy teaches earth sciences.
    Gochnuur, Christopher: A nomadic Scotsman, this short-order cook has been almost everywhere—experiencing the local cuisine and women. Possessing quickness, he had adopted his love of food to make him an incredible short order cook.
    Katz, Val: German-born, this Neo-Sapien possesses immunity to heat and flame. She teaches chemistry and physical sciences.
    Knight, Stephen: This Dutchman's Neo-Sapien power has granted him a prehensile tail; he teaches art.
    • Manuel, Jesus: Mister Manuel is an Esper with high intellect. He teaches computer sciences.
    McClanahan, Peter: A 2007 graduate, Mister McClanahan teaches divinity and philosophy and also serves the school as its chaplain.
    Nelson, Ronald: Former United States Air Force Captain, Ronald Nelson acts as the school's pilot and teaches a select few how to fly.
    Newton, Isaac: Hailing from England, Sir Newton is currently one of the two headmasters overseeing the administration of the school.
    Noble, Tyson: A member of the 2007 graduating class, Tyson teaches in the humanities department of the institution.
    O’Laughlin, Dana: This diminutive member of the 2007 graduating class now serves as the physical education teacher.
    Popagos, Blaine: A member of the 2007 graduating class, this Grecian teaches political sciences.
    • Rodriguez, Hercules: In 2007, Mister Rodriguez became a member of the alumni and stayed on to serve as its maintenance director.
    Sonck, George: An Esper gifted with the ability to process information ten times faster than the human brain, this Finn teachers literature.
    Tally, Samantha: The school’s physician is also the mother of three students—past, present and future.
    Zlatkovski, Esma: Claiming Macedonia as her homeland, the school’s linguistics teacher is an Esper who comprehends all languages.



Former Faculty
    Altair, Alan: Though born in America, Alan Altair considered himself a son of France. The son of French immigrants, Alan staged his death and left his home in the mid-90s for Lyon, France. There, he joined Interpol, openly using his powers to combat organized crime and corruption. After eight years as an agent, Firn retired to sign on as an educator with the New Vindicators Academy of Europe. Less than a year after its founding, former French headmaster Louise Betrone committed suicide and Altair was unanimously ushered into his position.
    • Beltrone, Louise: Formerly the headmistress of the school, Miss Beltrone committed suicide before completing her first year of service to the school.
    Tharivol, Alexander: A member of the 2007 graduating class, Mister Tharivol taught theatre until his sudden departure less than a year into his tenure.
    Vogel, Richard: Richard Vogel was born and raised in Kilmarnock in Ayrshire, Scotland. From 1948 through 1980, the ruggedly handsome Scot served as a member of the Royal Highland Fusiliers, retiring as a decorated man for his activity. A proud man, Headmaster Vogel believes fully in his nation’s motto: “nemo me impune lacessit.”


The Alumni
In 2006, the first incoming class of freshman graduated from the four-year institute. Since then, numbers have increased each year—so much so that the European Academy sent ninety-two graduates to participate in the 2007 Trials. Of those, forty managed to survive until the Fourth Trial, which brought the number of representing Europeans to twenty-four.

    • ALLUMAGE (Claude Delacroix; France): Hailing from France, Claude Delacroix absorbs heat and uses it to fuel his flame aura.
    • DIASPORA: Little is known about this Esper (including his real name and nationality), but his ability causes everyone to scatter and separate from their allies.
    • DRAG (Camille “Camie” Horne; Australia): A native of Australia, this young woman is blessed with an ability to manipulate friction. At their graduation, Claude proposed to her.
    • ROTE (Emma Decker; England): Emma Decker is a born-and-bred Brit with the ability to recreate any learned skill she’s seen.
    • TANTRUM (Nadja Fromm; Germany): Hailing from Germany, Nadja Fromm is capable of tapping into reserves of strength when she becomes enraged.

Class of 2007
    • AMNESIA (Kylie Garrett; Denmark): A young woman who's touch can cause people to forget patches of their memory. After graduation, she rejoined society as a teller at her father's bank.
    • AMOK (Brian Bentley; Finland): A young man blessed with super-strength and cursed with Down Syndrome, he has since returned to his parent's protection.
    • ANTIQUITY (Marie Flannery; Ireland): Capable of manipulating her own age or the age of anything she touches, Antiquity was abducted by the Sixth Reich and used as a weapon against the Vindicators. She lost her life during the ensuing battle.
    AXEION (Scott Axeion; England): A very durable young man who can turn people to stone with a glance, Axeion has traveled abroad since graduation- seeking to become a professional wrestler in America.
    • ANTOINE (Antoine Vitesse; France): One of four brothers gifted with super-speed, Antonine returned home after graduation.
    BACKLASH (Tyson Noble; England): Though he spent several months with the American institute, Backlash returned to the European Academy as an educator. He possesses a reflective field that rebounds attacks back at their source.
    BIG BEN (Benjamin Baxter; England): Capable of increasing his size, Big Ben is now employed as a constable at home in England.
    BILE (Jordan Frazier; Australia): His acidic bodily fluids are more bane than blessing. After failing to assassinate one of the Americans during the 2007 Trials, Bile left the Academy and has since been branded a criminal.
    • CHARITY (Charity Bennett; Italy): Able to absorb and redirect energy so long as she is in physical contact with her sister, Charity went on to join both the Seven Virtues and a nunnery.
    • CHARYBDIS (Scott Fenton; Greece): By inhaling, Scott creates a vortex that begins to draw everything—including the air around him—into his maw, which is actually the portal to a pocket dimension.
    • CHASTITY (Chastity Bennett; Italy): As long as she stays in direct physical contact with her sister, Chastity can absorb and redirect damage. Though still dating Kiln, she is a member of the Seven Virtues.
    CONTAGION (Darwin Straus; Norway): Though he possesses immunity to the rigors of all disease and a penchant for inflicting any illness he has on others via touch, Contagion lost his powers during the Trials. He has been missing since…
    • DELORES (Mary Roberts; Spain): This young woman is an Esper capable of inflicting pain and anguish with a look.
    DIDGERIDOO (Ephraim James; Australia): Able to manipulate vibrations, Didgeridoo took part in the Trials with the intent to collect the price placed on Lodestone’s head by the Wisent during the 2007 Trials.
    DINGO (Mark Smith; Australia): Another of the Wisent’s would-be assassins, this young man is capable of transforming into an anthropomorphic canine. Like Mutt, a student of the Asian Academy, he is rumored to be the illegitimate son of one of the Vindicators: the Hound.
    EXCALIBUR (David Stennis; England): Able to transform into phalanges into razor-sharp weapons, he earnestly hoped he would be able to win the attention of an accredit super-team such as the Vindicators during the 2007 Trials. He failed to do so when he lost to Backlash and left the school to serve England as a vigilante.
    FEY (Dana O’Laughlin; Ireland): Permanently shrunk to a miniscule stature and blessed with ephemeral wings, this young woman remained with the school as an instructor.
    • FRANCOIS (Francois Vitesse; France): The eldest of four quadruplet brothers, each blessed with Super-Speed.
    HUBRIS (Blaine Popagos; Greece): Able to increase his abilities as long as he believes in himself, Hubris stayed on with the school post-graduation, electing to become an educator.
    • INDALO (Edmund Cortez; Spain): Able to manipulate colors and become intangible, Indalo was one of the more promising members of his graduating class, however, his team was eliminated during the fourth trial during the 2007 Trials. Since then he has returned to his homeland and acts as a vigilante.
    KILN (Evan Bradley; England): Along with his best-friend Backlash, the flame-throwing Kiln stayed in America for some time before returning to the European Academy as a teacher.
    PARAGON (Dominique Infinity; Italy): After graduation, Paragon left the school and is now considered a criminal. He encountered several of his former classmates and was captured—though he later escaped custody. Paragon possesses flight, super-strength, invulnerability and red hellfire.
    PHOBOS (Jeffrey Carter; England): The twin brother of Deimos, Jeffrey was left with abandoned at birth and raised by a priest in Cheltenham- a spa town in Gloucestershire, England. Like his brother, Phobos is a Nephilim whose black hellfire powers augments his combat abilities. He is now considered a criminal.
    PICT (Peter Andrew McClanahan; Scotland): With the power to bring his tattoos to life, Pict remained with the school after graduation and now serves as the chaplain.
    • PILLAGE (Bruce Davidson; Norway): Along with his twin brother, Plunder, Pillage gained super-strength and was both invulnerable and unstoppable so long as he was rampaging.
    • PLUNDER (Erik Davidson; Norway): Along with his twin brother, Pillage, Plunder gained super-strength and was both invulnerable and unstoppable so long as he was rampaging.
    QUINTESSENCE (Corey Ander; England): With command over ether, Quintessence can use his powers to create or destroy nearly anything. Unquestionably one of the most powerful individuals to enroll at the school, he has since stayed on and is currently an educator.
    THE RHINO (Alexander “A.J.” Tharivol; Netherlands): A 2007 graduate of the school, AJ possesses the Neo-Sapien ability to turn into any species found in the family rhinocerotidae- living or extinct.
    RUSH (Kasey Clinton “K.C.” Thinruush; Scotland): A super-fast Scottish midget, Rush stayed on with the school until he joined the fight against Apocatastasis. He was killed in battle with the resurrected Nephilim, Amy.
    SCRIMSHAW (Hans Ronke; Sweden): A young man possessing accelerated regeneration and an ability to both shape his bones and pull them from his body. His bones can be used defensively, as weapons, as projectiles or perform a number of tasks.
    • STENDHAL (Stendhal Vitesse; France): One of four brothers gifted with super-speed, Stendhal returned home after graduation.
    • STONEHENGE (Baxter Clinton; England): Able to transform his flesh to stone, Stonehenge had the potential to become a great hero. He abandoned that to follow his dreams and now studies the culinary arts at Le Cordon Bleu.
    TAEGAN (Taegan Mallory; Greece): Younger son of a green Nephilim, Taegan possesses an uncanny ability to manipulate the bio-chemistry of those he can readily perceive. To help in his abilities, his psionic brother telepathically implanted their dying father’s knowledge as a doctor into his mind.
    • TARTESSOS (Jesus Manuel; Spain): Possessing high-level intellect, a knack for developing advanced technology and the power to temporally skip ahead Jesus Manuel is the modern-day name given to this ancient Neo-Sapien. A young man from the legendary island of Tartessos, at the civilization's destruction, his Neo-Sapien powers manifested and he skipped ahead to this day and age. Post-graduation he has remained on with the school as an instructor and lead developer.
    TERPSICHORE (Felicity Venizelos; Greece): After graduation, this young woman left to study abroad in America. She hides her ability to boost the Neo-Sapien abilities of others while studying law at Harvard.
    • TORO (Hercules Rodriguez; Spain): The minotaur-like Spaniard stayed on at the school, and currently serves as maintenance.
    • TRAUMA (Kyle Lowman; Luxembourg): With the power to force those he touches to relive traumatic moments, Trauma left the academy after graduation and now serves as a priest in his home village.
    • TRISKELION (Scott Reiner; Greece): Able to separate himself into three exact copies, Triskelion returned home to work as a cook in his mother's restaurant after gradutation.
    • TRISTAN (Tristan Vitesse; France): One of four brothers gifted with super-speed, Tristan returned home after graduation.
    • UNGUD (Silas Hogan; Australia): Cursed with snake-like powers and an accompanying appearance, Ungud's team went rogue during the 2007 Trials and has since been labeled as a wanted criminal.

Class of 2008
    • AURIC (Eva Nikulainen; Finland): When her ability to transform living matter to gold first manifested, Eva killed her girlfriend. Since then, the woman made of liquid gold has lived in fear of her ability.
    • CERBERUS (Marcus O’Shae; Northern Ireland): A Nephilim capable of duplication, teleportation and summoning hound-like creatures.
    • COMET (Janosh Berbatov; Bulgaria): Somber and sullen, this speedster manifests an aura of frictional heat around him as he moves all-out. Though easily manipulated, he is loyal to a fault.
    • FOLKLORE (Boy Verhoeven; Netherlands): Renown as the school’s resident geek, this metamorph has the ability to transform into creatures of legend.
    • MIND LASH (Gonca Alvadez; Portugal): An Esper whose telekinesis manifests as a pink glow, she typically lashes out with whip-like tendrils formed from psionic energy.
    • PLAYLIST (Alexander Schmiddt; Belgium): Depending on the genre of music he’s listening to, Playlist’s powers vary greatly. He frequently relies in a pair of goggles that feed him visual data and allow him to generate illusions.
    • SAINT (Maxime “Max” Dupont; Algeria): The son of Samael and a Neo-Sapien woman, Saint’s Nephilim abilities grant him a healing touch, calming aura and spectral mallet while his mother passed him augmented strength and constitution. Once the forerunner of his class, he departed with a mysterious woman and several members of his class have devoted themselves to finding him…

Class of 2009
    CATALYST (Emily Adler; Germany): Though the 2011 class originally encountered Emily as an opponent, this young Esper joined the school while she continued to search for her parents.
    DIAMOND DUST (Juozas Cahan; Lithuania): This young man is possessed with the Neo-Sapien power to transform his body into a cloud of ice crystals.
    MILDEW (Matt Meyers; Estonia): Unable to control his Neo-Sapien power to form a creeping layer of mold on anything he touches, this foul-smelling teen has been a social outcast for years. Seeking to conquer his social awkwardness, Matt became a student of stratagem but his social awkwardness and less-than-witty commentary has rendered his tactical opinions less-than-inspiring. He has delved (i.e., read about it on Wikipedia) the occult.
    SIDRA (Alina Amânar; Romania): A master of chess, Sidra has the Neo-Sapien ability to fly and withstand any atmosphere.
    SPRITE (Mira Linden; England): Mira is a relatively well-adjusted girl with the Neo-Sapien ability to manipulate plasma. She comes from an open-minded, albeit poor, family who love and accept her. Her peers often refer to her as ‘happy-go-lucky.’
    • VENEFICA (Unknown; America): Able to transmute any chemical into any other chemical, Venefica was first rescued by the rogue Vindicators, and later transferred to the New Vindicators Academy of Europe to finish out her senior year of high school.
    WARDER (Dag Schenkenberg; Sweden): Possessing uncanny alertness, Sven suffers from hypervigilance, a psychological condition that leaves him distanced from his peers. Unbeknownst to him, he has died before; he owes his immortality to his ancestor, Heimdall.

Class of 2010
    BLUE KNIGHT ("Harry Percy"; Wales): Sidekick to renown British superhero Paladin, Blue Knight is a Nephilim who came to the school with experience in crime solving.

    MAGNITUDE (Kasimir Flaegler; Germany): With command over the forces of gravity at his disposal, Magnitude has proven that he's more than his impairment and become an indispensable member of the student body.
    MAZE (Ellen Woolf; England): A Nephilim who wields yellow flames, Ellen’s unique ability allows her to displace living beings in an extra-dimensional labyrinth.
    MEZZANINE (Anne Newton; England): The cybernetic daughter of Headmaster Newton, Anne is cold and distant.
    PACHYDERM (Mario Tharivol; Netherlands): This Bibliophile has the Neo-Sapien ability to transform into an elephant. He thinks this is awesome. No one is sure why.

    APEX (Cornelis Nooteboom; Netherlands): Cornelis is known for being overtly polite and a bit of a complainer. Uncannily strong and tough, he is also capable of spinning at tremendous speeds.
    CANDYMAN (Vladislav "Vlad" Radikovich; Romania): A farmboy from Transylvania, Vlad has the Neo-Sapien power to cover himself in a crystalline substance that looks, feels, tastes and smells like hard candy.
    CURRENT (Alexander "Lex" Murphy; America): Super-fast and super-conductive, Lex is a survivor of Black Box's nationwide witchhunt.
    EVE (Eve Robbins; America): This attractive young woman's Neo-Sapien powers make her almost as perfect as she believes herself to be.
    FACH (Tatjana Nelson; Germany): This beautiful young woman’s dreams of being an opera singer are on hold while she attends classes at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe and learns to master her sonic scream.
    FELSIC (Pirjo Tähti; Finland): With the power to transform her body into molten rock, Felsic was a member of Laputa, until their downfall. Now, she is in the custody of the New Vindicators Academy.
    FLUXX (Martin B. Curie; France): A young Frenchman with an unstable body and abilities that give him boundless possibilities.
    GAE' BOLG (Randy O'Shae; Ireland): There once was an NS named Randy / who's friends thought he was quite dandy / He could turn into a tree / or control plants with glee / and his teammates thought he was handy.
    GREYSTONE (Jack Rexton; America): Jaded by the events occurring in his home nation, Jack's rugged, survivalist instinct is almost as strong of a trait as his shaping ability...
    IMPASSE (Viktor DeGallow; Spain): This immovable, unstoppable, invulnerable Spaniard is hedonism made flesh.
    LARRIKIN (Australia): A prankster with a dark side, Larrikin is capable of manipulating color.
    LLUVIA (Gaspar Zorrilla e Higueras; Spain): Blessed with an ability to conjure rainclouds, Lluvia has proven himself to be a natural leader.
    MANTICORE (Lexus Rauf; England): With the ability to turn into an anthropomorphic lion covered in poisonous quills, Lexus was once expelled when the previous administration learned of his romantic relationship with his classmate, Cornelis Noteboom. He later joined the terrorist organization, Laputa, only to be remanded to the custody of the New Vindicators Academy following their defeat.
    PARABOLA (Kirstie Arnett; England): A bit of a tomboy, Kirstie’s Neo-Sapien powers allow her to gather and redirect energy.
    PRODIGY (Jason Lamperogue; America): Jason's the brains of this outfit.
    RHEID (Armande; America): Able to transform into liquid rock, Rheid lent his skills to Laputa, only to be placed in the custody of the New Vindicators Academy after the group's defeat.
    URSA (Otso Karell; Finland): After his mother's passing, Otso joined the school in hopes that it would be his best chance of reuniting with his estranged father.

    LULLABY (Sarah Nelson; America): An American refuge, Sarah is Fach’s younger cousin and also in possession of sonic abilities: her voice can put people to sleep.
    TROUBADOR (Mike Mitchell; France): Whenever this charming young man plays music, his powers allow him to turn those who hear his song into mindless thralls.
    QUAIL (Douglas Droll; America): Like Lullaby, Quail is another refuge from America.
    QUWAH (Mouloud Poundstone; Algeria): Super-strong, Mouloud practices total pacifism and refuses to commit any act of violence—even to defend himself…
    SHIVER (Violet Lear): The daughter of a member of the British House of Lords, this athletic young girl has the Neo-Sapien ability to generate an area of extreme cold, as well as generate ice.
    • TANTIVY (Herta Radikovich; Romania): Super fast, Herta was raised by Radu Radikovich and left to join the ranks of Laputa. Following the terrorist group's downfall, she was remanded to the custody of the New Vindicators Academy.
    VERVE (Astrid Tiel; Austria): An orphan who never tires, Astrid is an expert gymnast who employed parkour in order to survive on the streets of Vienna…
    VESTIGE (Beatrice Marceau; France): This young woman’s eyes see auras left behind in the wake of movement.

VINDICATORS OF EUROPE
Following the defeat of the Vindicators in 2007, the world saw the rise of three localized teams. One group of Vindicators appeared in America, while another spawned in Asia. In Europe, however, the former Vindicator Falkenburg revealed his team to the public: Apollo, Quintessence, Shirley Holmes, Taegan and the Thespian.

Falkenburg's group defended Europe for months before they were dismantled in the battle with Apocatastasis. Some of their teammates were slain, some defected and others just quit. From their ashes though, a new group was born. Today, Crusader leads Backlash, Fey, Hubris, Kiln, Quintessence.

    Quintessence – A graduate of the New Vindicators Academy, Quintessence is a young man with more power than he realizes, an incredible drive to save the world, and an attitude that has him believing he doesn’t truly need his teammates so much as they need him. Far from arrogant, Quintessence simply believes (despite evidence to the contrary) that he could do more good by himself than burdened with a team.

Former Members
    Falkenburg (leader): In the seventeenth century, Captain Bernard Fokke was rumored to be in league with the devil. Nothing else could explain how the Dutch East India Company captain possessed such uncanny speed. Not wanting to hurt his reputation, Captain Fokke dared to sail through a storm, proclaiming, “I’ll sail ‘til Judgment Day!” Now cursed with immortality, Bernard Fokke has become Falkenburg, the man forever forbidden to rest peacefully. During the battle with Apocatastasis, Falkenburg fell victim to the Nephilim's soul-drain: while his body lives in forever, his essence is recovering slowly, leaving him in a comatose state.

    Apollo – The Greek god was long ago imprisoned in Tartarus for his vicious acts and only recently made his escape. His father dispatched his twin sister to hunt him down and return him to his punishment. Knowing he stood no chance against her, Apollo had made allies with the Vindicators- heroes oblivious to the crimes he has committed or to where he has spent the last few millennia. Apollo left the Vindicators during the battle with Apocatastasis, joining up with a fellow servant of Semyazza, Mister Willoughby.

    Shirley Holmes: After her husband was killed by an SPB, this Scotland Yard inspector drank from Mímisbrunnr, the well of knowledge. Now blessed with uncanny insights that reach even into the near future, Inspector Holmes is working alongside the very sort of people she despises… and falling in love with one of them… In the wake of the battle with Apocatastasis, Detective Holmes returned to London to act independently of the Vindicators.

    Taegan: Another graduate of the New Vindicators Academy, Taegan is blessed with biokinesis- the ability to control the life function in others with a simple look. Terrifying powerful, Taegan is possessed of a desire to always do right, though his chivalrous code often causes him some setback or another. Taegan lost his life fighting Adrammelech during the battle with Apocatastasis.

    The Thespian: Once considered to be the greatest actress to ever grace the Royal Shakespeare Company, Eva Renton was also an alcoholic and a prima donna. Expelled from the troupe she observed Siegfried cornering Melpomene, the muse of tragedy. He cut her down with Gram and left her to rot. Approaching wearily, Eva found the Mask of Tragedy which allowed her to shapeshift into any form she could imagine. Putting the mask and her career as an actor to use, she joined the Vindicators--what she considers the role of a lifetime.



Enemies
    Artemis: Twin sister of Apollo; after her brother’s escape from Tartarus, their father sent the huntress on his trail. The Vindicators do not yet know the full truth of Apollo’s history (nor that he has spent hundreds of years imprisoned beneath the earth), only that Artemis seeks to capture him.

    Auberon: King of the Fey, Auberon commands the race of banished celestials. He understands that the Fallen are executing a plot against his former homeland and is employing his own tactics to divert them- all the while unconcerned with the effect his countermeasures may have on humanity.

    F.A.S.T. – Francois, Antoine, Stendhal and Tristan are four brothers blessed with super-speed. Recent graduates of the New Vindicators Academy of Europe, the quadruplets have since turned to a life of crime- stealing whatever they want and running away before they face punishment.

    Laputa: An mysterious terrorist organization consisting of several members, Laputa's goals are yet unknown.

    Paragon: Yet another graduate of the New Vindicators Academy of Europe, Dominique Infinity is a Nephilim with many physical gifts. Unfortunately, these talents have made him exceptionally arrogant and under the belief that he cannot (and should not) be denied anything. What Paragon wants, he takes- be it money, cars, or women. During his tenure at the academy, Paragon forced himself upon Prende Kreshnikëve, an act that led to her suicide. Her boyfriend, Quintessence, partly blamed himself and partly blamed Paragon- and is incapable of forgiving either man for their sin.

    Presto: A street magician from Paris, the Amazing Presto is a man in possession of a pair of magical gloves that give him a modicum of arcane ability. Though hardly a competent rogue for the Vindicators, Presto shows up in a crowded area every so often to perform a magical mugging: demanding the valuables of his audience while stunning them with a terrifying magic act.

    Savateuse: Hailing from France, Savateuse is a cat burglar who loves nothing more than the rush of a adrenaline she gets on a job. As a Neo-Sapien, the martial artist is gifted with uncanny leg strength, allowing her to leap incredible heights and shatter steel with a kick.

    Siegfried: After killing Fafnir, Siegfried gained invulnerability, the power to understand the language of the birds, agelessness and the gift of wisdom. With his new insight he understood that Odin had manipulated him through most of his life and dedicated himself to slaying Odin and his kin. His sword enchanted with the ability to kill even the immortals, Siegfried is now on a quest to slay the gods…

    The Sixth Reich: Following the defeat of Nazi Germany, Johann Meinstein named himself the Fuhrer of the Fourth Reich and used his psionic abilities to take control of Allied Forces. Though he was stopped by the Vindicators, his servants continued his work, returning in the 1980’s as the Fifth Reich. Again they were put down by the Vindicators, only to surface recently and finally put their hated foes down. The Sixth Reich consists of Lebender Schatten, Schadenfreude and Weltschmerz and is led by a mysterious new man who claims the name of the Fuhrer.

    Spring-heeled Jack: During the Victorian era, England was plagued by sightings of a terrifying man capable of leaping extraordinarily high. As the sightings increased, a diabolical image was collected. Over time, many began to fantasize about the fantastic origins such a being held- ranging from ingenious devices to Jack being the devil himself. The truth is that Spring-heeled Jack’s real name is Jack Dawkins and he is a tulpa, a being born from the mind of Charles Dickens. The first recorded appearance of Spring-heeled Jack occurred in 1837- when Bentley’s Miscellany began to publish the serial that would later be collected as Oliver Twist. One of the characters, more popularly known as the Artful Dodger, took on a life of his own and became the villainous Spring-heeled Jack. One of the original Illuminati, the group was shattered and Jack has since gone rogue- returning to plague England once more.

    Thalia: The Muse of Comedy has made it her life’s mission to use her abilities to make life miserable for the Thespian, who now wears the mask belonging to Thalia’s late sister, Melpomene. A prankster by nature, she usually uses her own shapeshifting powers to manipulate others into fighting her foes for her.

Base of Operations: The GM’s Apartment
First Appearance: New Vindicators #24

Biography: Greg Gygax lived in the basement of his mother’s house. As her fourth marriage began, her new husband had given Greg a handsome proposition as a means of encouraging him: for $100 a month, Greg had reign over the sublevel. His privacy was ensured by a lock and key and his utilities would be provided, as would his necessities of life.

All he had to do was get a job and pay the rent.

At twenty, Greg started his first job but the exciting, fast-paced career as a checker at Wal-Mart came at a heavy price: the time he invested behind the register meant time away from planning the next exciting adventure for his PCs.

For all five of them, life was a massive Catch-22. They were all gamers and their habit was often an expensive one. Newer systems were costing between $300 and $600, core rulebooks for their favorite tabletop RPGs were nearly as expensive as the latest video games, and booster pack of Magic: the Gathering were almost $4—forcing them to work an hour to afford two boosters. The day Greg spent $60 on a new controller, he had had enough.

Gaming cost money, money was obtained through work, work took away time that could be better spent on gaming. It was a vicious cycle but the day Greg realized he wasn’t the only Neo-Sapien in his close-knit gaming group the wheels started turning and he devised the greatest adventure ever…

What began with Garfield Richards’ (PWNAGE) accidentally outing his absorption powers led to each one of them coming clean with each other other. Takeshi Naru (sp4wn_p01nt) told them all of his teleportation abilities while Kenan Elvis (RedHott315) displayed his pyrokinetic mastery. Jim Thompson (n00b), the youngest of their group and the only one still in high school, was relieved to be able to finally display his super-strength.

Greg revealed his ability to manipulate the odds and hatched an insidious plan: why work for money when they could steal it? Their powers and one-hundred and thirty-seven combined viewings of Oceans 11 would enable them to pull of perfect heist after perfect heist. Every so often, Greg coordinates a strike to liberate one institution or another of their cash. He’s careful not to fall into a patter and Takeshi’s teleportation has left police unable to find the criminals. In under a year, the group has pulled off a series of heists and has stolen millions of dollars.

NEW VINDICATORS: absit omen—The power_gamers attacked the Ambassador Grill, the restaurant atop the Plaza Hotel. It was also the location Ben Altair (Frostbite) had chosen to take his girlfriend out for her birthday. When the attack began, Frostbite got a distress call out to the school and Gabrielle teleported her brother Gabriel into the melee.

It wasn’t long before the teen speedster Blur joined the fight and Oscillator flew into the fray behind them. The heroes’ combined efforts held against the criminals, creating a stalemate that lasted until Bulwark arrived.

Ultimately, the villains teleported away, though the heroes had captured one of their number: their leader, the GM. The ringleader sustained a crippling injury from Bulwark, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. In such a condition he was given over to Alcatraz Island but the heroes didn’t yet breathe easy… The other four were still out there and still had the power and potential to be a threat.

ILLUMINATI: Interwebs—The remaining power_gamers went to San Francisco with the intent of rescuing their GM from Alcatraz. As they plotted to take down the Guardians, they ran into the Illuminati and a battle began—one interrupted by Elemenoh P. Quarez. During the adventure, Elemenoh took a liking to the precocious villains. After Elemenoh departed, sp4wn_p01nt rescued the GM, only to find that Elemenoh had healed his spine as a way of thanking them for entertaining him.

NEW VINDICATORS: hostis humani generis—The New Vindicators next encountered the power_gamers during their exodus into Peoria. When Bluetooth caught wind of the power_gamers in the act of committing a crime, Gabrielle used her spatial distortions to take her team directly to them. Doing so brought the power_gamers wrath on them though, as the villains hacked Bluetooth’s head and turned her on her friends.

NEW VINDICATORS: contraria contrariis curantur—When Suicide Dave’s latest plot to end his existence blacked out New York City, the power_gamers bounced on the chance to make out like bandits during the rioting—an act that put them against the Vindicators.

NEW VINDICATORS: condemnant quod non intellegunt—In an attempt to impress the newest member of his group (Ding!), the power_gamers attempted to get into a club, Hell in a Handbasket. When denied entry, they moved to cause a scene only to have such an attempt thwarted by the newest class of New Vindicators.

sp4wn_p01nt is one of the more effective members of the team- given his high Defense and feats. Going up against the team's tank he can redirect most attacks from the party's resident meat shield to less impervious characters such as energy manipulators, psions, speedsters and the like. His best trick isn't just turning the PCs' bruiser against their team but in removing others from combat. Do the PCs have a Probability Controller who's ruining your day? How about a cleric running around healing away your hard efforts? Teleporting them away from the battle can play havoc on the party.

Next up is PWNAGE. Most players fall into the pattern of punch, kick and bite. When they're not expecting an opponent with Absorption, watch them lunge in for the attack and scratch their heads as their best blasts don't seem to slow him down. The party just might assume he's a straight-up blaster for the first few rounds until someone finally puts two-and-two together.

RedHott315 and n00b are fairly straight forward, and archtypes for any super-team be they good or evil. The muscle and the flamethrower don't serve some extra purpose beyond raking up damage on some PCs- keeping the more troublesome occupied while the others do their thing.

I've always done my best to make this campaign world as real as possible; that's a difficult task given the subject. Still, I've always been of the opinion that ordinary people get powers too. It's something I'm exploring more with the new class of New Vindicators, but... I'm always intrigued by the concepts of how the world would be different if terrorists had duplication, if television evangelists could actually heal, and... if gamers had powers.

They're made all the more entertaining through their RP. I promised my players that the first to drop to any of the power_gamers would be tea bagged and I kept my word. Additionally, when the power_gamers win a battle (hasn't happened yet) they pose dramatically and collectively hum the victory fanfare from Final Fantasy. Is it surreal? Sure, it is... but I'm of the opinion that were a group of gamers to obtain powers they would either A) devote themselves as super-heroes and get in the way of the trained hero or B) deside they never had to work again.

I also like the 'how to use' bit, as it makes it easier for people to pick up and play them to their full potential.


Thanks, that's just what I was hoping. With the various villains I'll be working on in the weeks to come, I hope to integrate this a great deal.

POST-WAR: 1945-1949
With the end of World War II came the incident which alerted the world to the presence of Neo-Sapiens—super-powered beings born with gifts unlike those of your average man.

In 1945, the Fuhrer struck out at allied soldiers. World War II was on the cusp of officially being a thing of the past and a remnant of Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich appears from the darkness, abhorrently ready to continue the efforts and see Germany victorious. With President Roosevelt’s radio broadcast, the existence of Neo-Sapiens was made public knowledge and the world shuddered to think of what horrors would come next.

“Genesis 6:4 says, ‘There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.’ My fellow Americans,” said the President, “like in the days of Noah… we live in an era where men of renown still hinder our continued existence.

“There are dangers in this world that the average person may not be aware of. There are powers at play throughout the world that would do us harm. There is no escaping that vile, horrible men like Adolf Hitler are born in this reality. There is no avoiding that these wicked beings seek to rip from us what is rightfully ours: our freedoms, our resources, and… our very lives.

“Today, September 8, 1945, a man calling himself the Fuhrer has launched an attack on the world. He and his Fourth Reich had made a mighty strike against this world and have begun a battle that cannot be fought with guns and tanks, planes and bombs… The Fuhrer of the Fourth Reich has an ability—a power to enter our minds and control our thoughts.

“Remnants from Hitler’s Third Reich and his Nazi Party have joined this man—willingly throwing their support behind him and onto his terrifying bandwagon. Allied soldiers have fallen to his frightening will.

“The governments of the world have scrambled to dispatch a team of equally powerful beings. These new men, these… Neo-Sapiens… they carry our hopes and our prayers for a better tomorrow, a safe tomorrow, and simply a tomorrow.

“God speed, Vindicators.”

Joann Meinstein hid his fantastic gift to control the minds of others throughout his years serving in Hitler’s ambitious faction. However, he refused to accept the defeat the allies had handed Nazi Germany. Proclaiming himself the Fuhrer of the Fourth Reich, he had created a great army to use in striking a terrible blow to those who had stood victorious at the end of the Second World War.

Normal soldiers could do nothing against the Fuhrer- they were quickly brainwashed to his side of things and only helped add to his forces. Ultimately, the freshly formed United Nations decided that only others with gifts like the Fuhrer could contend with him. Led by the patriotic Uncle Sam and shielded by Jaundice’s own psionic talents, the team of five heroes was dispatched to stop the tyrant before his amassed power advanced on the world…

However, there were others with frightening abilities amongst the Fourth Reich—some willing and some psionic puppets the Fuhrer recruited. Amongst those “drafted” in the Fuhrer’s army was the tyrant’s own son, Wilhelm Meinstein, who possessed an uncanny control over the forces of magnetism.

Also in the Fuhrer’s company was the mysterious shadow creature Lebender Schatten and the vicious Schadenfreude. Along with Wilhelm, the trio was the first to face off against the Vindicators.

It was when they confronted the Fuhrer himself that he revealed the horrible truth that he was the bastard half-brother of Uncle Sam. The Fuhrer reached into the hero’s mind and learned the two called the same man father. Uncle Sam had believed his father slain in the First World War. The villain unveiled the truth: he had been wounded and nursed back to health by a young German girl. Together the two had made a child, Johann Meinstein.

Enraged by his claims, Uncle Sam put his all into a last-ditch effort. With Wilhelm staving off the Iron Curtain and Jaundice using his mental abilities to counter the Furher’s, all hope fell on the Frog to salvage victory.

Though the younger Meinstein had been slain, the shadow wraith and Schadenfreude managed to escape. They would return over time, constant thorns in the side of the Vindicators, who went on to serve the world for the next few years as champions of justice and defenders of freedom.

On March 21, 1947, President Harry S. Truman signed Executive Order 9835—a loyalty program designed to root out communist influence within varying departments of the U.S. federal government.

In 1948, the Department of Justice deemed the Vindicators subversive and campaigned for the heroes—Uncle Sam, Crusader, the Frog, Jaundice and the Iron Curtain—to submit to loyalty review thanks to the presence of a Russian and a Chinese man on the team.

A year later Uncle Sam was killed in action, Jaundice had died of natural causes and Senator Joseph McCarthy dug his teeth into the Iron Curtain. America pressured the United Nations into terminating the Soviet’s son from the Vindicators and, grudgingly, the powers that be buckled. Crusader resigned in disgust, leaving the Frog as the only remaining member of the Vindicators.

ROSTER

    CRUSADER (Naomi Brewington)—Hailing from the United Kingdom, Crusader was a beautiful young woman who seemed to most embody what the Fourth Reich wanted: a blonde-haired, blue-eyed super-woman of unparalleled physical abilities.

    THE FROG (Pierre Money)—Growing up in the French countryside, Pierre Money was always made fun of for his cowardly behavior. His teenage years found him discovering the abilities he would later put to use to defend the world, but in his youth they merely helped him flee from simply bullies. The young man never had anything resembling self-confidence until after he played a vital role in taking down the Fuhrer and saving his companions.

    GUIREN (Huang Li)—The eldest member of the original Vindicators, Guiren was a sagely old man with a talent for mental abilities. Born and raised in the center of China’s government, Guiren used his telekinesis, telepathy, and mental blasts to protect his compatriots from the mental powers of the Fuhrer. Though he survived the encounter, his age caught up with him two years later.

    IRON CURTAIN (Nikoleivitch Volkov)—Born with the ability to absorb heat, transforming his body into organic steel bestowing him with enhanced speed, strength, endurance, and invulnerability, Nikoleivitch served both his motherland and the world with all that he was and more.

    UNCLE SAM (Samuel Meinstein)—At the helm of the Vindicators was Samuel Meinstein, the man with a well of mass inside of him. Uncle Sam could tap into this energy to transform himself—increasing his size to astonishing heights or distribute it to generate many duplicates. Uncle Sam most symbolized what America is: a sleeping giant and a powerful collective of brave soldiers.

In the midst of the Thule Society’s study of all things related to the lost continent of Hyperborea, several members came across an ancient artifact known as the Sephirot- ten keys that could open a portal into Atziluth, the World of Emanations. Fearing the destructive power the keys held, the men formed a secret society… the Illuminati- sentries set to protect the world from the possible onslaught of all existence.

One of their number, the Rabbi known as Ahasuerus saw the keys as a way to end his maddening wanderings and bring his immortal life to an end. In his quest to unite the ten shards the Illuminati charged a new generation of heroes- brave souls who now take up the mantle to protect mankind from things that would drive the average person insane.

Thus far the Illuminati have dealt with animated statues of the Mothman and Big Joe Montferrand, the Jersey Devil, Spring-heeled Jack, Ogopogo, the undead, the Papal Swiss Guard and even Ahasuerus himself. The threat of the Sephirot behind them, these young heroes look on into an unknown world… and marvel at what awaits them next…

The Chapel
The Illuminati live in a church, located in the heart of San Francisco. Though one would assume they would be forced to sporadically deal with the annoyance of parishioners (especially come the holidays), this wondrous building as a defense all its own.

The Chapel itself is but a guise. To truly reach the headquarters of the Illuminati, one must also be able to traverse into the Astral Plane.

    The Chapel

    Book of the Grigori - Passed down from Aurelius to Aurelius, the Book of the Grigori is what allows the Aurelius to take in apprentices and teach them to wield arcane forces. As the Book of the Grigori is the source of magic in the OUBLIETTE Comics universe, any character with magical powers has had to have been taken in as an apprentice of the Aurelius at some point or another.

    The book serves a secondary purpose though. A compendium of universal knowledge, the book can bestow the answer to almost any question one might need to know. The book knows only knowledge though- it cannot read minds, predict the future, scry on current events or determine motives. Knowledge is also not added automatically to the book- meaning it can only be used for checks in Arcane Lore, Earth Sciences, History, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Theology and Philosophy.

    The Vault - Inspired by Egon Spengler’s invention, the Vault is a massive wall space with extra dimensional holding. The inner capacity of the Vault is believed to be near infinite- capable of holding anything in a state of constant flux and is inaccessible via any means- terran or extra-dimensional, mystical or otherwise. While this does make for excellent holding cells, it is also where the Aurelius have kept their more powerful artifacts over the years. The combination word is trusted only to the Aurelius- so only one of the Aureli gens can truly open it.

Former Members
    The Aurelius (Coup Field): Formerly the Apprentice to the Aurelius (Dr. Stephen White), Coup inherited the title by default when his master mysteriously vanished. Coup is a former street magician who takes little seriously.

    Deimos: A Nephilim with powers that augment his fighting abilities, Deimos is a brash and impulsive young man with a dark and troubled past.

    Doctor John O'Reilly: When his wife died in an explosion meant for their nephew, Doctor O'Riley became obsessed with finding a way to plend science and sorcery to revive her. He created the Alpha Virus, a bacteria that keeps his body alive against most other odds.

    Oafeon: One of the Fey, Oafeon was freed by Coup from a magical urn the Aurelius had long ago sealed away. The two quickly became inseparable.

    Odin: A mysterious old man with one eye, the wisdom of the ages, and the power to shapeshift. He has a mysterious connection to the Aurelius and a hidden agenda with the Illuminati.

    Rumble: Following her mother's death and her father's disappearance, this graduate of the New Vindicators Academy of America liquidated her mother's estate to fund the Illuminati and their hunt to find the Aurelius.

    Tick-Tock: Born in 1957 as Joseph Higgins, this master of temporal energies appears to be a teenager. Unbeknownst to him, his real name is Chronus Aeon; as the Lord of Time, he is history incarnate.

    Unno Rokuro: A shinobi and part of Sanada Yukimura's group of immortal ninja, he was captured by Indrid Cold and brainwashed into turning against the Illuminati.

    William Benson: A low-ranked peon amongst the Thule Society, William has a thirst for knowledge and an adventurous soul. He also has a knowledge over the unknown that rivals even the Aurelius.

    Xrix: Little is known of the Nephilim who calls itself Xrix, only that the entity is capable of reading thoughts and has a penchant for using their illusory guises to further play with the minds of those around it.


Enemies
    Ahasuerus: Cursed with immortality, the Wandering Jew seeks to end his suffering by using his arcane knowledge to unravel reality and bring all of existance to a grinding halt.

    Auberon: King of the Fey, Auberon commands the race of banished celestials. He understands that the Fallen are executing a plot against his former homeland and is employing his own tactics to divert them- all the while unconcerned with the effect his countermeasures may have on humanity.

    Indrid Cold - The entity that calls itself Indrid Cold secretly commands the Thule Society and is responsible for bringing the Illuminati together. Unbeknowst to the heroes, Indrid Cold is a being almost as old as time itself...

    Purgatory

    Sigfried: After killing Fafnir, Siegfried gained invulnerability, the power to understand the language of the birds, agelessness and the gift of wisdom. With his new insight he understood that Odin had manipulated him through most of his life and dedicated himself to slaying Odin and his kin. His sword enchanted with the ability to kill even the immortals, Siegfried is now on a quest to slay the gods…

NEW VINDICATORS ACADEMY OF ASIA

In 2002, the People's Republic of China and the Russian Federation came together to administer the Asian continent's New Vindicators Academy. As per the Vindication Charter the school would rest in neutral territory from each of the governing powers. Ultimately Tokyo, Japan was chosen as the site for the school.

Typically, the New Vindicators Academy accepts any and all Neo-Sapiens between the ages of 13 and 18- however, exceptions have been made for non-NS youth or Neo-Sapiens who manifested their abilities early in life. Not only do students receive a formal education, they are trained in the use of their powers as well as self-defense - allowing them to better protect themselves and loved ones from opponents of Neo-Sapiens.


The Faculty
The New Vindicators Academy of Asia is staffed by great men and women from around the world. Mainly, these counselors have been heroes who have defended their respective motherlands at one point or another.

Originally China chose the leader of the Cabal, Yuanji Huo, to act as administrator on their behalf. Russia opted to select Mother Russia as their headmistress. Both of these heroes lost their lives in the Corruption, however - killed by Dumah and Adrammelch, respectively. In their place two new administrators have been promoted.

The Syllabus
Despite that the United Nations defines its official languages as Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish and Russian, all students enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe are required to learn English for communicating with representatives of other nations.

While students will find themselves presented with the normal curriculum young people their age face, they can also be approved for special electives. These range from special workshops dealing with the finer points of their abilities or classes designed to better hone their skills.

For instance, students with an ability to manipulate gravity, magnetic waves or inertia may have Tactile Telekinesis suggested to them whilst students blessed with area-affecting abilities may be urged to attend courses on Environmental Manipulation.

Students showing an aptitude for leadership may be taught the finer points of diplomacy and conversational skills. Others may be training to pilot unique vehicles or be allowed to take classes on network espionage. Special field trips to Siberia may be designed to teach survival skills.

Students are also required to attend bi-weekly training exercises in the dojo.

RED SCARE: 1947-1957
April 4, 1949: the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed. NATO served as military alliance that vowed to defend each other in the event of an attack on any member. As a sign of faith each country presented a national super-powered being to represent them in the second incarnation of the Vindicators…

Each nation was prepared for the inevitable and ready to attack and in the midst of those feelings the unthinkable happened: one young man, sent to the Gulags for his political outcries, discovered there his latent Neo-Sapien ability… the power to control radiation.

With America fearing the end of their monopoly on nuclear technology, a young man in Russia with such powers signaled the start of a horrible battle. Russia dispatched its own team of super-heroes gathered for defense (and led by former Vindicator the Iron Curtain) and from there the hammer fell.

The nations that had assembled their best saw everything as the beginning of an attack and dispatched their own team, gathered under Lodestone, the son of the Fuhrer.

After their inaugural battle, the Vindicators and the Cold Warriors clashed many other times over the course of the next decade. However, in 1957, both teams found themselves working together when they responded to a supernatural entity who appeared in the Middle East. Only Falkenburg returned from that fateful battle—and with no memory of what had happened…

ABSOLUTE ZERO (Vincent Johnson)—From Iceland came a former boxer. Absolute Zero’s body radiates extreme cold that he can either contain inside of him or unleash as a blight on the area around him. Following the mysterious death of his wife, he fell to a new arch nemesis: alcohol.

THE ARCHMAGUS (Charles Tharivol)—The most mysterious member of the group, the dark sorcerer represented Luxembourg.

CAPTAIN CANADA (Chuck Gladstone)—Canada’s native son was blessed with an ability to summon the arctic climate of his homeland’s northern shores.

CECAELIA—Denmark sent a Cecaelia, a Daughter of the Air. Once upon a time she had been a mermaid who—heartbroken—tried to end her life. Now she must spend several lifetimes doing good deeds in hopes of earning an eternal soul.

FALKENBURG (Bernard Fokke)—In the 17th century, this Dutch sea captain was renowned for his uncanny speed. Relishing his reputation, he refused to do anything to tarnish it—including yield to a terrible storm. Insisting that he would sail until the second coming, Falkenburg found himself cursed with immortality…

THE FROG (Pierre Money)—As the only surviving member of the original team, Pierre incorrectly assumed that his seniority would place him in a position of authority. When the reins of leadership were instead handed to Lodestone, the Frog found himself dispassionately obeying his former enemy.

LIBERTY (Virginia Bell)—Though only in her teen years, this American debutant was the descendant of the Æsir Libertas, who was revered in Ancient Rome. As such, this young woman was empowered with unbridled strength and an unparalleled will.

LODESTONE (William Loder)—The son of the Fuhrer, Lodestone strove to prove that the apple falls far from the tree: not only was he devoted to justice but his powers granted him mastery over magnetism, rather than the mind.

MURMILLO (Markus Sergius)—Once a member of the Sergius gens, Markus was deposed by his younger brother and forced to fight as a murmillo in the gladiatorial arena. He became a champion warrior who eventually won his freedom, although not as he would have believed: Markus was catapulted across time and arrived in the twentieth century, where he opted to devote his strength and skill as a Vindicator.

THE TEMPLAR (Simon de Payans)—Hailing from England, this Esper was a gifted mind reader—a talent he applied in combat as a martial artist.

TICK-TOCK (Joseph Hartley)—This Norwegian man is the latest host to personify time.

TRAPPIST (Georges Janssen)—From Belgium came a monk of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance. This soft-spoken, contemplative man was gifted with a Neo-Sapien power to distort sound—either nullifying it or altering it to his whims.

VIETNAM WAR: 1959-1974
Seeking a swift end to the war in Vietnam (and to the protests against the war) America and her allies in the conflict dispatched a third generation of Vindicators. These heroes became embroiled in a shadow war against an evil organization bent on controlling the world: Hecatonchires. As such, many of their exploits are not very well known…

ROSTER
    DRUID (Roy Levy)—A magus whose magic is strongly rooted in nature, Roy wields a mystical shillelagh and a magical amulet that permits him to adopt the traits of various animals.

    HOLLY GOLIGHTLY—Inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s performance in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, this young woman inherited her ability to manipulate light from one parent, while the other passed on their inhuman luck. Trained in ballet, Holly became an invaluable member of the espionage team.

    JARHEAD—Formerly of the United States Marine Corps, Jarhead is an All-American Hero endowed with augmented physical abilities.

    NAMATAR (Mathew Cook)—An altruistic musician empowered by his infernal blood, Namatar undergoes a physical transformation when he uses his powers, gaining uncanny strength, physical resistances and wings strong enough to buffet his opponents.

    WALKABOUT (Jacob Lang)—Born in New South Wales, Walkabout was an indigenous Australian, or an aborigine. He was not of pure blood: his blood had some watered-down English in him, left over from the 19th century explorer Doctor Lang. Blessed with the ability to manipulate time and space, Walkabout joined the Vindicators in their crusade against evil.

VINDICATORS IV: 1974-1979
Life sometimes has a way of manipulating the events—forcing them to take an ironic twist. Four school teachers at John Adams High School to secretly be Neo-Sapiens was not ironic. That for years they had worked together and counted each other amongst their friends was nothing. That each one’s abilities corresponded to a different element however, was certainly something…

Doctor Kenneth Bradley had spent much of his high school years at JAHS infatuated with the lovely Victoria Richmond. He had watched as she went from jock to jock to jock, at one time even dating Patrick Goodman—the bully who tormented the geeky captain of the chess team throughout their careers as students. Things had been better after Kenneth accepted an invitation to return to his old high school to teach history while he wrote his second book. Victoria and Patrick too were teaching there: Victoria taught literature and Patrick coaching football while teaching driver’s education and health.

Things were good and life felt normal—like it should have been.

Life has a way of changing things when everything is feeling good too…

The school was attacked by Miss Multiple; the woman was looking for a student who had accidentally revealed his morphing ability and had his identity exposed by the media. Miss Multiple wanted to create a group of Neo-Sapiens to fight against the building aggression her kind was suffering. With the school under attack, Doctor Kenneth Bradley slipped away to transform into his aquatic form, intent on defending his students and the object of his affections.

Unbeknownst to him, Victoria had also evoked her own abilities with the same intent. Despite having known of her abilities for years, Victoria was not as experienced with her abilities as Kenneth was. Lacking control, she unintentionally reverted to her actual form during the fight. Her identity and vulnerability exposed, Patrick revealed his own ability to defend her whilst Kenneth continued to work in the shadows. He was aided by the quiet, reserved chemistry teacher Professor Philip Alston, who revealed his control over flames to Kenneth (and that he had known of the other teacher’s dual identities for some time). The two brilliant minds quickly concocted a plan that saved the school (as well as their two companions).

Kenneth revealed his identity after the school board terminated Victoria and Patrick for fear of public backlash and how their status could endanger their students. He kept Professor Alston’s secret and Alston continued teaching. The trio instead took to the hero-business, deciding to continue the fight against Miss Multiple and the clan she was starting.

Soon Professor Alston joined them after his other secret was exposed. Philip Alston was a homosexual and had been carrying on an affair with his assistant—a junior at the high school their adventures had started in. His name and reputation soiled, he turned to the only other option open to him and joined the other three in their adventures.

Other villains and other adventures followed, but it always seemed to come back to Miss Multiple. Just as Kenneth and Victoria were beginning to build a relationship, the madwoman captured Doctor Bradley and had her cohort Hippocrates alter the good doctor’s genetic makeup in an experiment. The result left Doctor Splash forever imprisoned in his aquatic form.

Fearing the life he would be subjecting the woman he now loved to by continuing their relationship, he withdrew from her—going so far as to disband the group after years of missions on behalf of the United States government. Though he claimed it was because of his inability to continue the fight against Miss Multiple, it was to spare Victoria from a continued romance with a man incapable of loving her physically and to prevent something similar from happening to the others. Not understanding this, Victoria sought comfort from her only other friend: her ex-boyfriend, Patrick.

As the 70’s closed, Kenneth found himself attending the wedding of two teammates: he had driven Victoria away and back to the arms of her former boyfriend and alone he stood at the threshold of a new generation’s dawning…

    COACH CRAG (Patrick Goodman)—After high school, this quarterback gave up on his dreams of making a career out of playing football and joined the Army where he learned to “drive anything.” The strongman of the group, this former Driver’s Education teacher and football coach has the ability to transform his skin into solid rock.

    DOCTOR SPLASH (Kenneth Bradley)—An unfathomable genius with a love of history and tactics, Doctor Splash used his mind and his ability to transform his body into liquid as the team’s leader.

    MISS MIST (Victoria Richmond)—Trading in her pom-poms for a library card, this former cheerleader returned to teach literature before using her Neo-Sapien power to transform into air as a Vindicator.

The Astral Plane

In the world of OUBLIETTE, some characters are able to traverse to other dimensions. Heaven and Hell exist, as do the notions of Purgatory and the Dreamtime. These places are connected to each other and to the mortal realm by the Astral Plane.

The Astral Plane is mirror world: it is a thin layer that lies over the Material Plane. All that exists in the real world appears in the Astral Plane, albeit in an intangible state. Those who fully traverse to the Astral Plane are able to pass through walls but are incapable of affecting objects that rest on the other side.

While precious few possess the ability to physically move to the Astral Plane, there are numerous individuals who become astral themselves. In most humans this is achieved through dreaming; the consciousness separates from the body and begins to move about the Astral Plane. Some stronger-willed humans are capable of controlling the landscape of the Astral Plane in this state. For example, those who physically journey across dimensions are unable to pick up a vase in the Astral Plane, but Dreamers are able to heft it (a process which causes the vase to move in the real world as well).

Others may have the ability to consciously leave their bodies- though they are still anchored to them. These individuals can only move so far from their bodies. Neither on the mortal realm nor fully in the Astral Plane, these soul forms are unaffected by those on either realms (though their physical body is still at the mercy of those near it).

The Astral Plane is also the bridge to the afterlife. A rare individual may be able to exert their will over the human soul- binding them to the Astral Plane rather than passing through to Heaven or Hell. It is for this reason that the Purgatory, a choir of angels, resides in the Astral Plane and hunt those who are no longer able to return to their physical body.

For reasons yet to be discovered, the Astral Plane has an odd effect on those capable of wielding hellfire. Demons and Nephilim both become unnerved upon stepping foot into the realm. The longer they remain, the worse the psychosis becomes: eventually, they transition from unsettled to panicked before becoming terrified and eventually losing their sanity.

It is commonly believed that this is due to another affect the Astral Plane has on demonkind: while in the mirror dimension, their hellfire powers are completely nullified. It is impossible for any being to channel a single spark of hellfire or evoke any of their associated abilities while on the Astral Plane.

Base of Operations: An island in the Mediterranean, possibly the Adriatic or Aegean Sea; according to Erudite, the engines absconded during the Kaiserslautern Event are being employed in making the island mobile.

Goals: According to Erudite, the goals of Laputa are to overthrow the United States of America as well as any other nation that would oppress Neo-Sapiens. Then, using her intellect, she strives to usher in a utopia that will guide mankind--humans and Neo-Sapiens together--into an era of prosperity.

This has since been confirmed by Therianthrope to be misinformation. According to his confession, Erudite is actually a Lacuna-possessed Tabitha Lamperouge and that her goals cannot possibly be as simple as forging a utopia or world domination.

In reality, Lacuna was Elizabeth Lamperouge, who blamed her brother Jason for splitting up their family. Laputa was nothing more than a weapon she wielded in her crusade against him and any happiness he may have found in life.

Crimes: On September 9, 2008, two members of Laputa (Basilisk and Confectionery) abducted the parents of Emily Adler and used them to coerce the young woman to mind control Captain Nelson into creating a hostage situation in Kaiserslautern, Germany's townhall. These events are currently believed to have been a means for distracting the Bundeswehr, Germany's Federal Defense Force, while Therianthrope attacked the nearby Ramstein Air Base.

Then, on September 27, 2008, Herta Elaide, the adopted sister of a student (Vladislav Radikovich) at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe unexpectedly arrived on campus. After finding her brother in the school's sublevels, she revealed the tattoo of a black pawn on her left shoulder and exposed herself as a member of Laputa. She then used a wireless detonator to activate a bomb planted in one of the many buildings composing the United Nations offices that flanked the institute. This explosion was shown to trigger the activation of Lacuna's personality within another guest of the school: Gabrielle "Elle" Curie (younger sister of student Martin Curie).

In the ensuing chaos, the possessed girl made her way to the sublevels where she liberated Basilisk, who had been captured two weeks prior during the K-Town Incident. In their flight from the school, one of the students (Alina Amânar) pursued them in the air. She was ambushed by Therianthrope, who effortlessly ended her life miles above the Earth's surface.

On October 13, 2008, Lacuna took control over Matt Meyers, a student at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe, and opened fire on a classroom, injuring two classmates (Juozas Cahan and Fiore Caspian) and one teacher (Iulia Catargi) before being brought down.

The following day, Nadja Nelson, a secretary at the school, was found murdered. While the suspects were initially Tevfik and Lexus Rauf, several of Laputa's agents involved themselves in the investigation: Entier was observed manipulating the body in the sublevel's infirmary while Felsic, Tantivy and Therianthrope were observed searching Vienna for a student at the school, Beatrice Marceau. Though the pawns fled, Therianthrope fought a handful of the students and was successfully brought to justice.

Operation: Aeneid
Therianthrope turned out to be a Trojan horse, however: one of Lacuna's seeds was inside the man and set to bloom with the conditional trigger of entering Pandora. There, Lacuna would mentally take over both the guards and the inmates of the secret prison and expose its location to the other members of Laputa. Entier, Confectionery, Zehirli and Lioness (as well as their respective pawns) were assigned as an advance party whose task would be to rendezvous with the infected prison for yet unknown reasons. This plot was exposed by Cornelis Noteboom, carrying a message from Candyman, as well as deduced by Martin Curie following a conversation with his mother. Therianthrope was steered away from Pandora, ensuring that Operation: Aeneid would be a failure.

The Invasion
With the failure of Operation: Aeneid, Laputa moved their time table up significantly. On October 24, 2008, their island appeared in the skies over Vienna. Ultimately, the Vindicators and the New Vindicators both invaded the island. Though they were split up, they began to take down one member of the organization after the other before finally disabling the island's controls. Once evacuated, Magnitude and Quintessence moved it to a remote location in the Alps. However, during the conflict, two students of the New Vindicators Academy of Europe lost their lives: Warder (Dag Schenkenberg) and Apex (Cornelis Noteboom).

Organization: Laputa is composed of sixteen members who operate as eight two-man teams under the direction of one individual. Each member represents a chess piece, with a pawn assigned to every major piece. As demonstrated by Tantivy and Lacuna, each member is marked by a tattoo that depicts their rank within the group.

Hostages: During his confession, Therianthrope revealed to his son that it was the bishops' were given the task of abducting "low-threat individuals of significant importance to the Vindicators and their allies." It was Laputa's hope that their presence, scattered about the island, would discourage their enemies from attacking the island, out of fear that a loved one might be harmed.

Each one was kept under house arrest and bares an abdomen scar where a explosive device was surgically installed; straying too far from their respective cottage would result in its detonation.

During the invasion of Laputa, Tallemaja twice took on the appearance of friends and family of the heroes: once, adopting the identity of Vicente DeGallow (Impasse's older brother), and later Gundrun Flaegler (Magnitude's little sister). Neither was ever shown to actually be on the island.
