Issue 1: Trial by Fire!

Another night has fallen upon Bay City, a quiet night like any other, quiet enough that Seven heroes are enjoying the night off...

Afterthought

Mmmmm... brains... A great big steaming bowl of REAL brains, not that vat-grown stuff you've had at your residence, real, fresh from the skull, taste the blood brains! granted, its boiled animal brains in some sort of sauce, but they are brains nonetheless, wealth from the depths to your sophisticated pallette

"I'm glad your enjoying yourself Illise," Mira, your girlfreind says as the two of you ride a rickshaw through Chinatown, just a quiet night together before you start your new job tomorrow...

or right now, as far up head, outside the dragon's gate you see a massive explosion erupt like a midnight sun

Atom girl

you can rattle off several curses on those idiotic irkens, but they sure as Apokolips know how to build jetpacks. maybe that's why you're taking such a lazy, meandering flight path... which saves your life as you watch a very large fuel tanker truck come hurtling up from below, right through your normal flight path, before hurtling down to the streets below and exploding in a massive fireball

Cryo

Another night, another soup kitchen. Not as many bums as you'd expect at this time of year, but then, your soup kitchen isn't offering the same deals as those Scions of Caine hucksters, who've shown themselves to be just as vain and uncaring as the false gods of the Pantheon.

unfortunately, you hear some mutterings from the bums, more 'thank you oh glorious master' than you'd care to ever hear again, but the Pantheon's reach is long...

And that's when you see the wall of fire rolling in on the soup kitchen, the doors and window exploding inward from the shockwave

Draco

Tomorrow is a new start for you, meeting those heroes you'll call teammates, and perhaps friends. But to you, that's not important right now, what matters is the list given to you by Doc, the leader of the wildstruck clan that has become your surrogate family. you've staked out an abandoned subway station, but now supplies are needed, so you've been sent topside with what money could be scrounged together for a shopping list, your family rightly think you're too dangerous for nat punks to try and steal from...

And that's when you see the tanker truck fall out of the sky, and explode into a monstrous fireball

Jammer

Another year, another company christmas party. Much as you'd love to spend tonight with the rest of the bumpers, until you get these powers truly under control your skating career is over. on the plus side, tomorrow you can finally stop hiding who you are, surrounded as you will be by like minded fellow freaks, er, your fellow superheroes

"Hey steph," vince, one of your more annoying co-workers, shouts even though you're barely five feet away "heard about your transfer. who'd you sleep with to get it, carl?"

ah yes, the 'transfer', the cover story provided to cover your upcoming career so that you can maintain your sceret identity and private life like a normal human being. normally its good enough, but vince is pretty drunk and kind of a tool who never liked you anyway

And that's when the bay window explodes in a cloud of shattered glass, letting in a potent wave of hot air, as a massive fireball erupts on the streets 3 storeys below.

Ned The Destroyer

you're halfway through your act, performing for the Bay City Credit Union Christmas party at the request of an anonymous benefactor. in fact, while not your best performance, you're doing far better than expected, considering that the Madgod has decided its storytime, and has been yammering on endlessly and thus dividing your concentration

And so... in recognition of my great deed... the man gave unto me his little brother in my servitude... and he was forever doooomed..."

you of course know this, you were there that day you were thrown under the metaphorical bus to cover your brother's ass, and the Madgod gave you the very magic he'd had sought all his life...

Ah yes... my junior prom.. it was raining knives, but I had these totally kickass shoes made from entrails and cheese...

and you still don't know which of you got the better deal. but, before you can ponder things further, that's when the bay window explodes in a cloud of shattered glass, letting in a potent wave of hot air, as a massive fireball erupts on the streets 3 storeys below

Oh me, the madgod groans, GLOBAL WARMING!

Steel Blue

Tonight's a rough one for you, even in the relatively posh surroundings of your hotel suite (paid for courtesy of Steele Omnitech), the first winter Solstice away from not only your father, but everyone you knew. the laptop provided for you sits on the desk, filled with all the information needed to learn about this madhouse men call earth.

your attention is then caught as you see fin the distance a massive fireball erupt on the city streets, and hear the thunder of its explosion

Afterthought

"Apologies Mira, but it believes there is trouble ahead. We will have to cut our date short."

Illise steps out of the Rickshaw and shifts into her costumed form. She slips the driver a twenty. "Please take the lady back to my apartment. And you did not see anything."

After Mira is out of harms way, Afterthought rises into the air and begins to fly towards the source of the explosion.

With a slight "eep" Randa comes to a halt in mid air and hoves there for a few seconds, recomposing herself. She was getting almost killed way too much on this planet. She was starting to reconsider the boring day to day life of Imsk.

Flying down to check out what happened, she pulled a small sound amplifier, and hoped the goggles she used to shield her eyes in flight were enough to keep anyone from seeing her face.

"Anyone hurt down there?"

Cryo
HP: 1

Life was certainly rough, but such was the price of what Cryo considered his penance. Besides, it was as much a way to confirm his change of mind to himself as well as others. After all, he could easily fall back into the old ways easily. You couldn't just wave away living in homeless shelters and soup-kitchens as well as helping out there.

When the fire wave rolled in, he yelled for everyone to get done and threw up the largest ice wall that he could. Panting for breath at the shock, he realized something had gone terribly wrong. "I'll be back!" Cryo shouted, before skating onto an emerging ice slide and out to where that... explosion had come from.
Impeach the peach!

"Hehe... great one, Vince..." she mumbled half-heartedly before slamming what was left of her drink. The fraud division was a hoot to hang out with, but any time the Bay City Credit Union made them mingle with Vince's corporate finance division, two drink tickets was like getting two wheels replaced on your skates: A good start, but not enough to feel stable. "Turns out, I couldn't bring myself to sleep with Carl. The whole 'him being married and not having a vagina' thing was kind of a deal-breaker."

Steph knew she could NOT be the only gay person Vince had ever met, living in Bay City. But for some rea-

As the ringing died out and her hearing returned, Steph realized too late she'd thrown up a kinetic bubble without thinking. A half-circle of glass shards clattered to the floor a heartbeat later, halted in mid-air by her powers. It probably saved her and Vince a few lacerations, but she hoped no one else noticed. She stumbled forward at looked down at the chaos below. People were screaming.

"Vince, call 911!" She turned and began running for the door.

"Where are you going, Steph?"

"I have to, uh-" She stumbled as smoke began to fill the room. "I have to make sure we opted for the insurance on this ballroom!" With that, she kicked open the double doors and bolted upstairs. Suite 410: Fraud. Under the furthest desk, shoved in back, her gym bag held her skates. And second life. Well, third life.

As he walked in the direction of the small grocery that was nearby Draco’s thoughts were focused on the list Doc had gave him when he heard the odd whistling noise that drew his attention up towards the sky just in time to see the tanker truck slam into the ground and then give birth to the incredibly bright ball of fire that lit up the night sky.

So much for shopping…. Draco thought while he tucked away the list and the money as he ran towards where the truck had landed. There was no telling if someone had been near its ground zero, there could be folks hurt that need help and Draco had quickly learned to just go with his first impulse since waking up to this life several months ago. It tended to pan out pretty well for him, for the most part that is.

Seeing the destruction caused to the windows, and ignoring the Madgod's exclamation Ned halted his latest act and turned to his audience. "Ladies and Gentlemen I'm afraid I must interrupt the show as we seem to have some sort of emergency on our hands. Please calmly head towards the emergency exits and mind the broken glass."

Once his audience had started making their way out Ned snuck a look out the broken windows to see if he could get a sense of the situation and what had interrupted his show.

The thoughts were becoming intrusive. Ripped away! Everything ripped away again! Catarina sat on the edge of the king-sized hotel bed and stared at the wall. The adjustment to this dimension was slow in coming. Partly due to her resistance to doing so. She had finally settled into the last new universe she'd appeared in. She'd established her identity, become an accepted member of a team--was doing good in the world--and had made the critical mistake of exploring the possibility of finding a way back to her home dimension.

Why she wanted to do this was largely due to unresolved issues with her father. She missed him, but also loved the freedom of her new found dimension. She had time and funding from Maximilian Mars. Her mind worked faster than most others and she saw the possibilities..she saw the dimensional gateway in her mind's eye and with Mars' assistance, the wherewithal to construct it.

And she'd ended up here. Another version of Earth. Another history to learn. No friends. No teammates. She was no longer an Emerald City Knight. Seemingly all the enhancements she'd made to her armor had reset to her first arrival on what she was calling ECK-Earth. That was a curiosity. But all she needed was time and money and she'd be able to fabricate them again. Hence her seeking out Steele Omnitech and Stark Enterprises. One of them would be interested in her plight. And Expertise.

Her reverie was intruded upon by the sound of an explosion. She recognized that sound all too well. Catarina looked down at her armor and without more thought and with practiced ease, began to don it and spin it up. Soon she was streaking across the night sky, her sensors probing the area for signs of the injured. She was a scientist, a warrior, but thought of herself, first, as a doctor.

Its a scene out of Dante's hell out/down there, fire and burning fuel everywhere, shrapnel from the truck still raining down, panicked screams from those who'd survived the blast but now face certain doom from the fires and toxic smoke that's rising up and billowing out

in the distance, you all hear the sounds of fire and police, but they won't get here in time, and all these people are going to die horribly unless somebody does something

bad news is, there is no somebody.

good news is, there are SEVEN somebodies!

time to go to work...
okay, here we go, time to do good and look awesome doing it, no rolls required. best description of your part in saving the day gets an extra hero point in addition to the one i'm giving you all now

Afterthought looked over the throng of panicked people, the massive flaming pit was a threat in itself, but the people panicking could be a threat in of itself.

<Citizens of Bay City, it implores you to be at calm, please exit the area in a calm and orderly fashion.>

It is not a powerful mental suggestion, nothing that will cause lasting harm, just a calming presence in their mind, encouraging them to quickly and quietly exit the area before any harm could be done. No rioting, no innocents being trampled, no families separated in the confusion.

Once those who are able to leave under their own power are safely away, Afterthought begins to scan for those who are trapped and hurt, and connects to her nearby allies.

<It is grateful to your assistance.> Afterthought says to her allies, <It shall seek out those who need our help. Please be careful, they may need some medical attention.>

To small to really be noticed Randa flies down and using the power gauntlets from the techpack she'd stolen from the Irkens, she hurries people out of the area as quickly as she can.

There wasn't much else she could do. It would take to long to make something to fight the fire with her pack. By then the local fire containment crews should be here and the only other thing she had was an energy pistol, and even the temporal stasis setting would probably just cause problems when it came to fire.

This would probably be easier if humans could just shrink like she could. At atomic size fire doesn't mean much. Still, she did all that she could for them, and hoped they didn't notice her.

Gazing upon the seen of destruction Ned didn't bother waiting for the Madgod to prompt him to action.

"He wanted a hero, well lets give the old bugger one for the ages." Ned muttered to himself.

He clicked his heels murmured "On a Wing and a Prayer" and stepped out the shattered window as his flight and shield spells activated.

Now that he was in the air and protected from the fire, it was time for some real magic. Removing his hat from his head and waving his prop cane over it he began producing a torrent of water continuously flowing from his hat to begin putting out the blaze.

Upon hearing another voice in his mind, not the Madgod for once, Ned was relieved. Hoping this new voice could hear him since he didn't actually have a form of mental communication he thought back as Loud as he could <Listen if you can hear me. I can provide a visual aid to help get those who can move to safety or mark out those who are trapped but I'll need you to help direct the illusions.>

While he was continuously working on the fire itself Ned also wanted to get people out of the danger zone as well. "Well there's plenty of smoke, so time for some Smoke and Mirrors."

Ned created an array of illusions to guide people to safety. Bright neon arrows, Talking Dalmatians wearing fire hats, images of cartoonish firefighters, and so forth appeared to guide people away from the fire. People who were trapped were marked with various obvious makers usually bright neon colors.

Catarina had been here before. It felt just like the last time she'd appeared in another universe. Flame, and suffering, and death. She didn't know if this time it was also man-made, but it didn't matter to her. She was here, just as the last time, to render assistance and salve the wounded.

She switched her sensor array to a penetrating radar that allowed her to see under the rubble. She used powerful audio boosters to listen for signs of life. With her force projector, she manifested a tractor beam to move away the ruined buildings and cars to access those still trapped beneath. Catarina worked calmly and efficiently. She was quite accustomed to scenes such as this.

In a relatively safe location, she began to create a triage staging area. The most grievously wounded--those who were beyond her ability to save--were placed together so that the civilian rescue personnel might address them when they could gain access to the area. She administered pain killers and moved on to those she might stabilize. She was a surgeon, but could not take the time to do more than assess and continue to look for more of the injured. And there seemed to be no shortage.

Deep in the basement of a building, Catarina worked to access a trapped elevator technician. He had a tibial fracture with acute compartment syndrome. The building was threatening to come down on top of both of them. Catarina had to erect a force bubble around the both of them while she administered a pressure-relieving fasciotomy before the man lost his leg. Her incision was clean and the man was brave. Field medicine was never ideal, but he wouldn't lose that leg--though he would need skin grafts...the least of his worries.

She was running low on pain relievers but not victims to treat. She surrounded a burning car with a force bubble and collapsed it fast enough to snuff out the flame. With the fire out, she could move the car and create a channel for the emergency personnel to begin to assemble.
