Zero Gene 3e OOC

Postby Severance » Sun Aug 19, 2012 1:44 pm

"They fell one night, like streaks of light crisscrossing the sky, so beautiful. I thought they were shooting stars, so I made a wish. I wished for the world to change, to be different. If I had known what they really were, I would have never made that wish..."

- Silvia Whitman, a current resident of Earth.

The world of 2022 is much different than what we thought it would be. Ten years prior, an event known as Skyfall, occurred. Seemingly a grand meteor shower, in actuality Skyfall was the result of an alien accident. What were thought to be meteors streaking through the sky were actually the remnants of a massive cargo carried through space, carrying the seeds to another species. These "seeds" were meant to grow into fully capable organisms, however, many burned up in the atmosphere. Those that did land would begin to grow using genetic materials around themselves. These creatures were dubbed "Phantasms" for their seemingly insubstantial and fluid forms (Despite being able to take different forms, Phantasms still keep a very liquid/amoeba like quality to their look). They began to grow in number at an astonishing rate, becoming a plague on mankind. It seemed as though for the first year or so that conventional technology would hold the creatures at bay, but soon they began to adapt.

Luckily for humanity, a new breed stepped forth with the capability to combat the Phantasms. Known as Espers, these men and women had access to amazing powers that allowed them to take out whole groups of Phantasms single handed. Espers had what was known as the "zero gene" a variation in their DNA caused by the same origin of the Phantasms. The vaporized pods from the Skyfall event had mixed into the atmosphere and certain people were saturated with enough of the material to form unique abilities.

Technology has advanced to where not only can Espers take on the Phantasms, but standard humans. Robotic "power armor" and even "mecha" have been developed since the early days, and some have merely trained themselves to live in a world where combat is the norm.

A good portion of humanity lives in orbiting colonies, those who were lucky enough to afford it (or by hook or crook). Those who remained were either doing so because of duty (military and police), or simply because they had no other choice.
This is the world of Zero Gene, where the players will fight for the future, striving to put an end to the Phantasms, if there is even a way. The world is a cobbled together idea I got one day when I thought about how humanity would deal with a possible alien threat. It takes a lot from anime (certainly G-Gundam and Getter Robo Armageddon) , but also from things like X-Men (the Espers). I also may have been influenced by the Shards setting from Mecha and Manga.

Anyway, the players start out PL 8 (hopefully they will grow all the way into PL 10 or even 12) and are currently operating in or are travelers come to Neo York (the remnants of New York City). There is a rule with Zero Gene, that despite its name the players come from different walks of life. Not everyone has to be an Esper. The three origins for most characters are:

- Trained Humans (elite soldiers, police, ridiculous martial artists/weapon masters, gadgets users)
- Espers (already explained these, but also note that Esper powers are always Noticeable when in use, and thus cannot be subtle)
- Power Armor Users (which represents anything from Iron Man battlesuits to mecha)

Player Characters
- Vixen
- Sally Salvage
- Wyatt Hallows
- Olivia "Bloodsport" Cassidy

Backstory
Jennifer had never been given a real name. Like all her sisters, she'd picked a name that sounded good based on the information that was streamed across the video screens they watched all day. They were all girls, all alike, and all different ages. She knew that this meant they were clones of the same woman, presumably selected for having high intelligence. Then their brains were stimulated with various chemicals and gene-therapy, and the occasional telepathic jolt, to become even smarter.

Not for their own benefit, or course. Talon merely wanted them to provide as much of an information boost as he could get when he decided to harvest a girl by consuming her brain, adding the data she'd been force-fed to his already impressive store of knowledge.

The current crop had been running low- she had only one remaining sister- when the complex which had housed her all her life was destroyed. She never found out what had happened. All she knew was that she managed to free herself and her sister when the security systems gave out and escape before the building was destroyed by the biggest explosion of all.

They found themselves alone on the streets of a dark and dangerous city. Using the few things she'd thought to grab while escaping, Jennifer constructed a few tools and learned to steal, taking money to support the two of them and parts for more gadgets. She learned the basics of survival in Majestic.

But she never thought to question why the building they'd taken shelter in was empty, despite having a roof that didn't leak and no broken windows. Why the gangs and homeless kept away. Not until the night that Nightmare, newly escaped from Rikers Island, returned to one of his occasional haunts.

They were asleep when he came, and both were grabbed before Jennifer could find one of her weapons, assuming they would even work against this monster. But before Nightmare could do more than scare them, a dark-cloaked figure dropped through the skylight Nightmare had dropped them when sharp throwing-blades struck his arm.

When the dark figure shouted at them to run, the girls did so, not even looking back. She lost some of her tools and gadgets that night, but as she found a new hideaway and rebuilt her things over the next few weeks, Jennifer found herself thinking about the man in the black cloak, the man who went and fought the monsters.

Currently working from a base under her home, fighting the city's corruption.

Two ideas are currently competing in a race to be the first idea to materialize. Some more information on the overall technology level of the game world will be a big factor in who wins.

Option A: Loosely based off of Lisbeth Salander from the Millennium series, the character would be a hacker. She would be able to delve deep into the technological side of the environment, heavily into investigation and electronic manipulation. Is there a VR 'net or matrix for the digital elite in the world?

Option B: Sally Salvage/Salvage Sally: Either a young woman whose physical body was destroyed or a nanohive with a regenerating body made of found trash, car parts, street lights, concrete, fastfood containers. In either case, would be a fairly typical brick build with maybe some extra features to help bring out any special effects that might come from her component pieces. I haven't worked out the points yet, but might be able to reshape herself.

Please share more about the tech level and if either of those ideas appeals more.

Thanks,

Good question (and character ideas!) Spectrum. Technology for the most part is much more advanced than today's world in certain aspects. This reality's version of Earth put more into space programs and such and went into space earlier than we did (1950's compared to 1960s), thus the highly functional orbital colonies. The tech on Earth itself is pretty advanced, though much went to military based projects (because of the constant fighting with Phantasms). There is a more advanced version of the Web that people can hook up to via VR, though many also still access internet the old fashioned way. There are also VR training programs (again because of military needs). Hopefully that answers your question. If you have any more feel free to ask.

I'm going pitch abit of mix and match a low end esper (i'm thinking short range teleport) with a high tech stealth suit with weapons to give him a little more punch in a fight.
    Insert witty comment here.

That's fine, as long as he can't teleport ridiculous amounts. Basically anything under a mile is okay with me.

Unfortunately, laser technology is compact "enough" for standard armament. What I mean by enough is that Devices such as battlesuits/mechs can have laser tech, and even super-science for a gadgeteer can have laser attacks, but they aren't standard enough to be equipment. They just require too much power (which a battlesuit with its internal power source can overcome, and gadgets are usually slapped with the Unreliable [5 uses] flaw)

Thank you for the extremely quick response. Sally has a much louder voice and I'll work on 'her'. I also like the idea of her being extremely new to the war and not terribly aware of who she is- allowing her to be either of the above options, or really anything else that comes up in your wicked GM mind. Would it be acceptable to have her awaken in media res crawling from the rubble during the team's first battle? Or maybe very closely related to that scene?

After putting a little more thought to the build (but not doing the number crunch yet), I'm thinking that she would be a weaker version of what I had originally planned. She isn't actually a standard construct, because there are things that would affect her- internal combustion engines need oxygen, environmental toxins can interfere with mechanical processes, etc. Her protection would be limited to available materials. Morph will probably come much later (if at all) as she learns how to shape herself into more effective forms.

I'll work on it across the next few days.

Thank you,

Well, so far we have four candidates posted

1. Vixen (trained human, Aerlwyn)
2. Allen Anderson (blind trained human, catman123456)
3. Sally Salvage (esper/machine, Spectrum)
4. ???? (teleporting esper, Plan B)

Anybody else want to throw their lot in? There's still time before the decisions are made.

Would the PCs be an independent group, able to choose their own missions and objectives or are they directed by the government?

Well, initially I was assuming the players would be independent (unless their backstory had them tied to a specific group like the military police), and then through story choices they may or may not become part of a particular organization. I was going with this because I'm not one to force the characters from the start to be part of a group. I will tell you that there would be benefits to joining a group like the SWAT division of the military police in Neo York City if you so choose.
