"Mia, what the hell is this?" Karen Montaign peeled open the envelope her daughter--who could now be tried as an adult--had just handed her. A plump stack of twneties peeked out.
Mia pulled the apple out of her mouth and tossed it to Duncan; kid needed to eat more. "It's money, Ma. People buy groceries with it." She dropped the grocery bag full of milk, pop-tarts, and canned veggies on her mother's table to prove her point. "It's just some of my winnings from last night. Wanted to help you out."
The two glared at eachother across the chaos of the kitchen. The Montaign apartment was never clean, but in the hour before school it degenerated into warzone. Caro had apparently returned home, but marked her continued protest by ignoring her younger siblings, leaving Mia juggling the twins into their coats and Karen to sort books between five worn backpacks.
"Winnings from your 'races'? You know I don't want you running around with those gangs, Mia."
"It's not a gang thing, Ma. Hand to God! It's good old fashioned sports, like the X Games." Her mother was especially proud of her year competing in the half-pipe, so Mia brought up the X Games whenever she needed to win a fight. That was before six kids, obviously.
"Then why don't you bring me or you siblings to your meets?"
" I said it wasn't a gang thing, not that it's completely legit. Cops don't like kids running around random rooftops. Its like a insurance thing." Her mother's eyes narrowed; time to switch tactics. "You got the time to patch coats for the twins? Because it's gettin' cold. I could take 'em shopping this weekend."
"Fine," the elder Montaign threw up her hands."Speaking of, I need you to watch them tonight. I've got another parent-teacher meeting for Shana."
"Again?" Mia shot her little sister a dirty look, but the dirty little brunette just smirked back and shrugged. She sighed and turned back to her mother "Yeah, sure. They on their meds this time?"
"Should be." She dropped a half-full cereal bowl in the sink and looked up at the clock. "Dammit. Caro, Duncan, Shana! Out the door! And make sure Shana actually GOES TO SCHOOL." Ms. Montaign threw on her uniform shirt and pulled her hair back. "And you can get those two to school?"
"Ma, when have I ever delivered them anywhere else?" Her mothers nonplused stare listed the half dozen 'incidents', but Mia pretended to ignore her and she herded James and Jenna out the door.
Sooner or later, her mother was going to demand starting more details about where the money care from, and she wasn't going to like that. Hopefully having a few people to work with and cover her backs would make the lies a little easier to juggle. "James, I swear to god if you lick that, I will kick your ass down the rest of these stairs." Yes, extra hands would help a lot.
