I'll be posting in a minute; I've just been in transit all day. I was on a boat and without any internet access until I reached the hotel.

Thanks, Red & others. That stop was awkward - my mistake.

Well...curses. There goes my big revelation.

I have extended plant perception range with a -1 per 1000 ft.

Perception (1d20+12=28)

I'd like to detect a tree in central park. Any tree. Do I do it?

Easily, since there's several there.

Essence cuts her own throat so Reprisal of Ruin takes care of the so-called heroes. No worries: it heals back and Essence does not need to breathe anyway.

DC 10 Insight or Intellect check (a simple routine check for everyone) should reveal the Vanguard should not have fallen that easily. Essence is good - but not THAT good.
DC 15 Insight or Intellect or Deception check should reveal that the "heroes" weren't actually there; those were minor copies, probably made via Essence's own magic.

In essence, Essence played a prank. A useful prank - as she believed the group wasn't adequately prepared for how fast the heroes could appear (she wasn't prepared herself with how fast they came to the airport) but still a prank.

Lithos' Perception check vs DC17 :
1d20 + 6=21
Got it !

'Some of the PCs have no Expertise : Crime ranks' ?

Lithos is the only character with ranks in Criminal (but just Car thief) - I find that rather disturbing ...

Although Precision does have Beginner's Luck (so CAN get some ranks at need).

Aaand... Essence rolls a "1" on her perception check, for a total of 14. Cosmic payback for the prank, maybe?

In any case, she'll take a move action as soon as possible to roll Perception again. Perception checks are one thing you should always try again if you got the time for them since they don't take up much time, only a move action. For example, a guy being a sentry, if he's serious about it, should get 3 checks per round; 1 normal check (reaction) and then spending his 2 move actions to attempt to see stuff he missed two more times.

Kevin, is what we're supposed to notice immediately followed by something bad, such as an ambush? If not, we could all reroll till we succeeded.

Beginner's Luck is a good one to have as well - I'm allowing players to add a few ranks of "Expertise: Crime", if wanted. Any other changes need approval.

My only concern with the prank was Essence getting attacked by the team, but it worked out, thanks to Nine/Willow.

I'd think the only way you get two consecutive checks would be having the "Second Chance" advantage, applied to a specific Perception check (ambush, clues, traps, ect.).

The team's being ambushed by a group running across Foster Street directly at your building!

Waiting on Eidolon, Willow, & Jack - if your PC makes the check, Roll Initiative!

Ok, I added 6 ranks of Expertise: Crime then. Sometimes it feels a little hard to tell what the line is between Crime and Streetwise is though.
Impeach the peach!
