Wheel of Fortune (3E) (OOC)

Postby levinwurth » Mon Jun 20, 2011 12:03 am

This is the thread for Wheel of Fortune, a 3E game set in Los Angeles of 1951.

----

Dominic "Bender" Walters

History: Dominic Walters grew up in Iowa. As a young man he was gregarious and outgoing, but as he got older he felt more and more of an outcast, that he didn't quite fit in with the other boys. His grades and his social life started to slide, and by the time he was 17 he had acknowledged the painful truth, at least to himself - he liked other boys.

He packed up everything he had and headed to Los Angeles, where he could start a new life. Like so many newcomers he tried his hand in Hollywood, and while he certainly had a voice for radio, he also had the face for it - at least, that was what one or two of the more... candid producers told him.

Hopes dashed but unable to face a return to his hometown, he managed to find menial jobs for a few years. His natural charm, now somewhat returned now he wasn't having to face people who knew him, won him a job as a bartender. It wasn't a bad living; the looming threat of war made drinking establishments good business, and the owners didn't mind that he was just shy of under-age as long as the money kept rolling in.

It wasn't long after his 21st birthday that the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and the US joined the Second World War. Despite the call for able-bodied men to serve, Dominic was given a discharge for "medical" reasons. He didn't have any desire to go spill his blood in the Pacific, but the way that people looked at a young man staying at home made him feel uneasy.

He now works primarily at Helen's, a bar in West Hollywood that caters to men like him. As long as he doesn't make too much of a spectacle of his life, it stays pretty quiet, which suits him just fine.

Image:

With dark hair and eyes, Dominic is pretty unassuming. He's generally very soft spoken, but when he does speak his voice is rich and effortless, and when he's at ease he has a natural wit and charm that seems to bring out the best in others. Producers were perhaps a little unkind to him - while he hasn't got the looks of Clark Gable or Cary Grant, he's not wholly unattractive.

Image

Powers:

After the 'event', Dominic is left with the ability to emit a psychic field that drains people's willpower. Those who've experienced it liken it to feeling drunk. Coupled with a heightened ability to coerce and persuade results in him being the diplomat of the team. In times of trouble he's able to 'hotwire' the field to selectively stun everyone within range.

Russ Charles PL3

Powers
After the event, Russ finds that he is able to both read minds and to overpower them, sending them into a bit of overload. He also finds that a few of his natural abilities are augmented, as though his muscle memory was physically altered.

Abilities
Strength 2, Stamina 1, Agility 1, Dexterity 1, Fighting 3, Intellect 3, Awareness 1, Presence 2

Equipment
  • Brass Knuckles (1 ep)
  • Light Pistol (6 ep)
  • Holdout Pistol (4 ep)
  • Binoculars (1 ep)
  • Film Camera (1 ep)
  • Knife (2 ep)

Advantages
Contacts, Equipment 3, Jack-of-All-Trades

Skills
Acrobatics (+1), Athletics (+2), Deception 5 (+7), Expertise (+3), Expertise (+3), Expertise (+3), Expertise (+3), Insight (+1), Intimidation (+2), Investigation 4 (+7), Perception (+1), Persuasion 1 (+3), Ranged Combat: Pistols 2 (+3), Sleight of Hand (+1), Stealth (+1), Technology (+3), Treatment (+3), Vehicles (+1)

Offense
Initiative +1
Unarmed +3, Damage 2
Knife +3, Damage 3
Brass Knuckles +3, Damage 3
LIght Pistol +3, Damage 3
Holdout Pistol +3, Damage 2

Defense
Dodge 3, Parry 3
Toughness 1 (Def Roll 0), Fortitude 3, Will 3

Power Points
Abilities 28 + Powers 0 + Advantages 5 + Skills 6 + Defenses 6 = Total 45

Complications
Reputation - Russ is on the CIA watch list and is under investigation by the HUAC.
Secret & Relationship - Russ is secretly married to and has kids with Sylvia Smith, a black woman.

Design Notes
PL6 Build is all worked out. He's got Mind-Reading with AE: Affliction and AE: Damage (all Perception ranged and Unreliable-five uses), and various enhanced advantages/enhanced defenses (I left his base stats alone and used "Powers" to explain his sudden ability to Dodge, Defensive Roll, etc). I definitely don't picture him using the Mind Reading, Affliction, or Damage all that often, especially since I've maxed out investigation and see him much more like a hardboiled detective.

Image
Sylvia Smith
Russ' Wife

Sylvia runs her own company of maids/cleaners. Sylvia's Sweepers isn't a large company, employing a total of 10 people (including herself - 5 two-person teams that service various contracts around the city), with all the paperwork done by Sylvia during her evenings at home. Most of the work is for corporate entities and small hotels, but there is one major contract with a rich family in West Adams. She and Russ live in Alameda with their two kids, both so very light-skinned that they could try to pass as white if Sylvia and Russ didn't try to emphasize that being black was something to take pride in.

Image
Bill Barstow
Russ' Best Friend and Police Contact

Bill is Russ' usual contact within LAPD. When cases are outside of the LAPD purview, or something that LAPD is simply not equipped to handle, Bill tries to call Russ with the info. Russ returns the favors by passing Bill info on crimes or leads that Russ digs up. Bill is one of the few people in uniform to trust Russ completely, mostly because Russ was the one who managed to free him in 1945 from a Nazi prison cell.

Image
Barry Craig
Russ' Main Competition

Barry runs one of the biggest PI firms in the city, employing a total of 6 investigators, a business manager, and a secretary. The only reason Barry hasn't run Russ out of business is that Russ is simply better at the actual investigation part of the job. It helps that Russ' prices are more reasonable, as well. But chances are if Russ is investigating something Barry isn't far behind, trying to outrun Russ to the answers.

Complications
Motivation: Patriotism
Prejudice: Female
Famous: Pin-up Girl, Actress
Relationship: Younger Sister
Rivalry(Actress): Sofie Garner

Appearance: Midge clearly got her pick of the litter when it comes to her genes. She's incredibly hard to miss at 5"10" and looks to be in the 140-150lb range, though she'll never tell. She has thick, golden tresses of hair that fall just below the shoulders and curl slightly, often partially covering her face, typically one of her deep blue eyes can be seen, though she has nothing to hide. Her makeup might be considered minimal for the time period, though she does use a small amount of blush, ruby red lipstick and plum colored eyeshadow when she wants to make an impression. Her figure is curvy and she has no problem flaunting it. At an athletic 38-24-38, Midge is a traffic jam waiting to happen. She always dresses to impress, preferring slinky black or red dresses and matching 2 inch heels or flats. Her voice is somewhat melodic and a tad bit smoky, and she has a Midwest accent.

History and supporting cast to follow.

History: Midge Madison was a typical American teenager in the Midwest. She had it all, beauty, talent and popularity. She was liked by everyone because of her talent for making people like themselves. And her boyfriend Nate was her sweetheart. He got along with her folks and little sister and everything seemed right. Then came WW2. During the war Nate's older brother joined the military as a volunteer, but was KIA. When Nate heard of this he decided to go as well, Midge was afraid for him and tried to talk him out of it, as they dreamed of leaving their small town to make it in the big city and raise a family. At 18yrs old, Nate left to join the Marines. Midge suddenly realized how selfish she was being, and joined with female workforce as a mechanic, working on planes, tanks and weapons for the Allies. Some reporters came to photograph various workers for the papers, and Midge stood out because of her beauty. She was offered a job as a pinup girl. She had done some acting and singing in plays in high school, so she knew how to pose for the camera. She went along with the idea, hoping that Nate would get one of her pictures.

Tragically, Nate disappeared and was presumed dead after the Pearl Harbor bombing.

When the war was over, women lost their jobs at the plant and were expected to go home and be housewives again, but Midge had no one coming home to her, and vowed she would never love again. She continued to do modeling and even did some shows for the soldiers on occasion, as a backup dancer or singer usually. She was very good at hiding her sadness behind such a radiant smile.

At 21 she went to Los Angeles, seeking to perhaps realize her dream. Once there she ran into many difficult choices and saw the underbelly of the city for what it was. Agents and producers made passes at her, telling her it was the only way she would get work in this town. She often obliged them, but never enjoyed it. Men thought of her as frigid, since she was not married at her age yet, and got into film so old. She got very small parts in B-movie science fiction, musicals, westerns and swashbuckling movies, playing harem girls, bystanders, barmaids or female sacrifices. Finally, she got her big break as Oghra the Cave Amazon in a prehistoric cave women movie. She played along side Sophie Garner who played the lead female role. Sophie and Midge then became friends on the set but soon after bitter rivals, as Sophie would do whatever it took to tarnish Midge's reputation and steal roles from her. The industry was against Midge as well, because she was seen as too tall if the leading man felt so threatened. To make matters worse, Midge's younger sister Ingrid ran away from home to live with her and hopefully become a star as well. Midge does not want her little sister to experience the things that she experienced, and so tries to protect her whenever possible.

Supporting Cast

Nate Jones

Image
Midges boyfriend. He disappeared during Pearl Harbor along with many others. Presumed dead. He was a very simple young man with very strong values.

Ingrid Madison

Image
Ingrid is Midge's little sister, whom she lives with. She's 17 and will do anything to try to get out of her big sister's shadow and become her own woman. She can be very forward and headstrong when she knows what she wants. She does, however love and respect her sister dearly and most of this behavior is in the hopes of being noticed by Midge. Ingrid has, unbeknownst to Midge, involved herself with drug use and prostitution since arriving in L.A. by going to Sophie Garner for help in launching a career, since Midge was being to overprotective. She has managed to keep it from Midge thus far. She is very afraid to come forward with this, because she doesn't want to involve Midge in her problems and wants to try to get out of the
situation alone.

Sophie Garner

Image
A fellow actress and rival of Midge. Sophie has all the advantages, she's shorter, younger, and just as talented, but for some reason wants to see Midge fail. Or at least fall behind Sophie. Sophie came from a big acting school in New York city and from a wealthy family. She believes that the stardom she is gaining is owed to her and everyone around her should serve her in some way. In fact, Sophie involved Midge's sister Ingrid with "people" to help her launch a career, putting Ingrid in with the bad crowd she's involved with now. She's vindictive, calculating and manipulative to the extreme and has even had other people physically hurt to get what she wants, though she's never done so directly. Black cats avoid her.

"Once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down?
That's not my department," says Werner von Braun.

Anna Illenberger
"Silhouette" PL3/45PP

Powers:
After the 'event', Anna is able to transform into a sort of "living shadow," able to move instantly through dark areas at will, and capable of creating darkness herself, blocking all light into an area, rather like a smokescreen. At higher concentrations, she can even use this "negative" energy to do direct damage, focusing it into strikes and blasts.

Abilities
Strength 0, Stamina 0, Agility 0, Dexterity 1, Fighting 1, Intellect 5, Awareness 3, Presence 2

Advantages
Attractive 1, Benefit (Security Clearance), Connected, Equipment 1, Language 2, Skill Mastery (Expertise: Physics).

Skills
Athletics 2 (+2), Close Combat (Unarmed) 2 (+3), Deception 2 (+4), Expertise: Physics 5 (+10), Expertise: Chemistry 1 (+6), Expertise: Aeronautics 1 (+6), Expertise: Engineering 1 (+6), Insight 1 (+4), Perception 2 (+5), Ranged Combat: Pistol 1 (+2), Technology 2 (+7).

Equipment
Hold-out Pistol, Camera

Offense
Initiative +0
Hold-out Pistol, +2, Damage 2
Unarmed, +3, Damage 1

Languages
Native (German), English, French.

Defense
Dodge 2, Parry 2, Fortitude 1, Toughness 0, Will 3

Power Points
Abilities 24 + Powers 0 + Advantages 7 + Skills 10 (20 ranks) + Defenses 4 = 45

Complications
Prejudice: A woman in a nearly all male field in the '50s, and a German in Postwar America to boot.
Reputation: As a "black widow." Though acquitted, Anna was accused of killing her husband several years ago. It made the gossip rags for a while, as murders tend to do.
Responsibility: High security clearance researcher at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, CA, with access to highly sensitive information.
Big Brother is watching: The USAF keeps close tabs on the German scientists brought to the US after the end of WWII.
Obsession: She didn't kill Emil, her husband, but she would dearly love to know who did, and why.

Relationships

Image

Dolores Marino: Anna's neighbor, a kindly, bouncy Hispanic woman and lifelong resident of LA. Dolores's husband is serving in Korea, and feeling lonely and isolated, she's struck up a rather unlikely friendship with Anna who lives across the street. Rather nosy, she's the sort of person who knows what's best for everyone around her. Given that Dolores is very shrewd and an excellent judge of character, she's also usually right, even if people don't always want to admit it.

Image

Heinrich Sorge: The head of Anna's section of the JPL, Sorge is an aeronautical engineer and a brilliant man, but fussy and demanding. He seems to resent those who have lives and interests outside of their work. Nobody in the lab, even the other Germans, has been able to figure out what Heinrich actually did during the war, and he's tight-lipped and irritable when someone asks about his past (to be fair, he's tight-lipped and irritable about everything.) This mystery has lead to whispered rumors about terrible experiments and war crimes. Anna doesn't know if any of that is true, but given the man's constantly sour demeanor, she wouldn't actually be surprised.

Image

Lt. Adam Kaminski: Someone higher up the chain of command must have thought it was a great joke to make a young, Jewish soldier the USAF liaison for Anna's division of the Jet Propulsion Lab. Overworked and underpaid, it was his job to monitor the group of expatriated Germans, to help them adapt to America, and to make sure they toed the line and stayed out of trouble. He took to his job with barely repressed hatred of his subjects, but has softened a great deal over time, realizing that most of these people had no great love for the 3rd Reich, and had often been forced to work against their will. During the ordeal following Emil's death, Adam had fairly regular contact with Anna, and over the years they have become cheerfully antagonistic friends. Their co-workers have noticed the way the officer and the scientist perk up whenever the other is around, and their frequent banter and teasing. Though both Adam and Anna are reluctant to say so out loud, even Heinrich wishes they'd just admit they care about each other and take the next step.

Stats
Name: Anna Illenberger
Occupation: Physicist and Aeronautical Researcher
Place of Birth: Heidenheim, Germany
Education: PhD in Physics, University of Munich
Age: 35
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 153 lbs.
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Blue

Notes
Aside from creating the powers mentioned above, the boost to PL6 will be used to improve Anna's dismal saves, and if the points are there, to give her some skills and advantages related to the powers, like Hide in Plain Sight, Sleight of Hand, and Stealth. I'll probably add some kind of Weakness to bright light as a Complication, as well.

Sean MacNamara

History:
In 1943 Sean MacNamara kissed his young wife goodbye and enlisted in the Army. He went through basic training and then spent the next two years running for his life until the Germans got smart and shot his leg off. Still he managed to get back to his unit dragging himself across a wide open field at night. Too bad the sentry thought he was a German sneaking across the lines. So Germans 1 Army 1 Sean 0 or -2 depending on how you looked at it.
He came home to a wife that looked at him like a ghost. The marriage was annulled and he sold the house. Took the money and what he could carry in a pack on the train out to California. Been there ever since, begging to keep a few pennies ahead of starvation and using his money to keep a roof over his head, to keep himself clean and sane. A bum in the gutter would never get work. In the gutter he’d be dead in a week. Rolled for a few pennies or beaten by a gang. He lived in a small comfortable bungalow and took a bus into the city every day to look for work at first… then just to beg for change away from his neighborhood. Most days he made more than the bus ride but not always. As the country forgot about the war and things got better they were going to stop handing out cash to a vet. He already saw enough homeless bums pretending to be soldiers for a little pity. Pretty soon they’d assume that everyone was making up a story. They’d say he was just a useless drunk that fell in front of a truck one night.

Everything changed the day of The Event.
Complications:
Dirt Poor. Sean’s got no money. He scrapes together what little he can to keep his home together and stay alive.

Disabled - Gave an arm and a leg during his time in the army and all he got in exchange was a couple of lousy medals. Best he gets are some hand shakes and offers for drinks a few times a year.

Connections:

Ex-Wife: Ilene Kennedy (New York)
Ilene could not handle the news of Sean’s tragic injuries. With the support of her family she asked for an annulment of the marriage with Sean. She is living with her brother Patrick’s family.

Neighbors
Old Mr. Johnson - retired machinist. Still tinkers half the night away in his garage on parts and pieces. Sean brings him any interesting things he happens to find which is not very often. They talk about the two Wars sometimes but mostly just share a beer.

The Collins family. Tom works as an accountant, his wiife, Sylvia, makes a killer roast and the kids Martin and Sarah are in grade school. Good kids.
The Lost and Forgotten
Michael Walker - Always dressed like a proper businessman. Thin as a rail, slowly starving. Sean spares what food he can for Michael.
Burt Lancaster - not his real name but that’s what he’s going by. A bit mad but the war did that to a lot of good men.
Annette Downing - Has lived on the street her whole long life. She’s the grandmother of the homeless and the strays. She commands respect among most of the lost and knows more about LA than any twenty news hounds.

Appearance:
Height: 5'6
Weight: 120 lbs
Hair: Dirty Blond
Eyes: Green

Sean is usually neatly dressed and clean shaven. His sleeve and pants cuff neatly pinned or sewn up. He has with him his dark wood crutch full of carved initials, names and well wishes.

Okay, so you all have your powers now. Go, save the world! Russia is that way.

...You wanted more?

Whenever you wake (or not, in perhaps the case of Midge and Gerry), you don't feel much different, despite perhaps a few niggling aches that you could probably put down to having slept in an awkward position, or maybe you're coming down with something. The characters should go about their business for the 21st as normal, and I'll throw out situations where hopefully we can work together to provide your characters evidence of their new abilities.

Feel free to make up your own weird events that happen (or has happened when you wake) when the Valiant overloads, something that your characters might note as unusual.

Rules Question...

OK so I'm trying to build a power which on 2e wasn't really a problem. But what with the changes that have happened and my lack of experience with the system, I can't translate as well. Here's my 2e build for the powers I want...

Rank Name
6 Blast:Bomshell full body explosion(alternate form, explosion)
extra: Area:Explosion
flaw: Range:Touch
Alternate power:
Insubstantial 2: Gaseous
flaw: Limited Can only assume form after explosion
Alternate power: Explosive Limbs
Strike 6 (Extra:Penetrating)

Is there a way that I can build this power set in DC Adv/M&M 3e? How would I go about it? Does this work just as well? Also are they any rules/house rules about trade-offs I should know about?

I suppose that would depend on whether using the Alternate Form was optional after the Blast or not. If it was, I would probably build the power set as:

Blast 6 (Extras: Area (Burst), Flaws: Reduced Range 1) 2pp/rank (13pp)
AP: Strike 6 (Extras: Penetrating 6)

Alternate Form 2 (Gaseous, Flaw: Limited (only useable after Blast) 4pp/rank (8pp)

I'm not sure how you'd do it if the Alternate Form was compulsory. In 2nd Ed I'd do it was a One-Way Transformation, probably.

I'll have a think on that one and let you know.

EDIT: Better yet, it might be worth asking on the boards about the latter option. Other people know 3rd Edition much better than I.

EDIT 2: The best way I can think of to make the Alternate Form go off whenever the Blast is activated is take the Uncontrolled form. That way, you could assume it happens every time you Blast, and I'll let you know when it turns off. :)

No going gaseous is not optional for her. She blows up, then is gaseous for w while then reconstitutes. Also, what would be your ruling if I wanted the explosion power to be something that might go off if she is knocked unconscious or under extreme circumstances? How could work? I don't want it to be very common, but can happen occasionally. Maybe a save roll could be involved? Tell me what you think!

If it only happens occasionally, I'd say it was only good for a Complication. Could call for a Concentration check when she's under a lot of stress, perhaps.

Blowing up when unconscious might not be workable - after all, how would she sleep? :)

As far as I can tell, using the Linked extra is the way to go. It's a 0 modifier, but having the explosion and gaseous form linked ensures they go off at the same time. And with Linked, you're compelled to use both concurrently.

I considered the same, but how does Linked affect things if one of the powers is Uncontrolled?
