The Guardsmen: Issue 2 Two Funerals

Post by heretic454 » Mon Nov 15, 2010 7:47 am

Prologue
September 23rd 5:22 am
By the time Adam flew in from on high Julia had already left for work that day. It wasn’t the first time his night job had kept him from being with her for the night, and he thought it wouldn’t be the last. Crisis seemed to come up before he could blink these days. Last night the sun had almost gone out. Heaven help him, but who would do that? Burn out the sun and kill everyone? Who could possibly be that evil? Or that unhappy? Of all people, Adam knew it wasn’t a perfect world, but it was the one they had.
And the thing he regretted the most? Dr. Wallace, the man who ultimately was responsible for almost stopping the sun from burning had died. Network had taken to calling him a bleeding heart for feeling that way, but it was what kept him going.

But now he was tired, and he knew he wouldn’t make it to work on time the next day. He’d already called it in that he would be late. He had vacation time coming to him - he and Julia both. Maybe it was time they take some of it and just end up on some unclaimed island out somewhere on the South Pacific. Julia could wear that little bikini she’d brought herself and he could watch her in said bikini. He could take off said bikini...
He shook his head an lay down on their shared bed as the sun was coming up. He was asleep before he took his next breath.

.....

and he was screaming in pain. Pain wasn’t a new concept to him. Hazard had caused it. So had Pinnacle and a slew of powerful enemies including one that liked to sport a microfiliment blade. But this was different. His eyes flew open and he saw the shiv in his chest; the dull black of Impervium. Someone had stabbed him with an Impervium knife. Blood bubbled up from around the blade and he took a ragged breath. And abruptly he knew there wouldn’t be another.

His eyes looked up and the knife was jerked out.
And then it came down
Again
and again
and again.
...
..
.

The call came in on the Guardsmen Emergency Communicators just after 9:30 am. "Condition Black Guardtower ASAP" was all it said. It was a color coded warning you’d never seen used before. Two code reds had come across it previously, and those were potentially world altering events. It had never reported a Code Black before. Not once.
This had to be bad.
OOC wrote: This is true for all except Lucrecia. I'll have another post up for her in a moment.
The Guardtower stood like a big brother over the city of Manhattan, dwarfed only by the Empire State Building twenty two blocks south. It was equal parts Ops Center, Hanger and Armory for an International conglomerate of Heroes. State of the art tech, magic, and good old hard human work went into building it, and it stood 85 stories above the street.
Image
The Guardtower @ 56th and Madison

It has a population of 27,000 at any one time during the day - mostly analysts, some tour staff and tourists - and it was one of the largest attractions for tourists of the city. But anyone who was anyone knew that the real purpose of the building wasn’t trying to touch the sky high above the ground. The real purpose of the building lay thirteen subbasements below, and that was where the teleporters took you. Most of you had never been below the ground floor, and those of you that had had never been this far down. This was Alan Ross’s personal Sanctum.

The group that is there already and trickling in behind you is a small one. The six of you and two others, a man and a woman that you recognize. A Powerhouse aptly named Big- she is a 10 foot no nonsense looking black woman. She had a reputation for having a soft heart, but that is the only thing that was soft about her. The woman could hit. The man was Artemis Johnson, the world’s leading telepath and one of the most dangerous postcogs in the business.
OOC wrote:Introduce yourselves, say what you were doing when the call came through and let’s get started. You all have no reason why you’ve been called other than it’s Condition Black. It is not common knowledge yet that Paladin is dead.

Lucrecia only:

It was a young demon that came to see you, the kind that you absolutely despised dealing with. Granted you despised dealing with all of them, they were demons after all, but the young ones were the worst, born out of humanities deepest and darkest urges. This one happened to be born from the internet and his small little corner of hell (literally) was populated by hardcore smut of the worst variety and underground snuff films that you'd probably prefer not to think about. His children were the worst of the internet's society and he looked like some teenage boy's disturbing wet dream taken to the point of revulsion. And this was its most attractive form.

The demon bowed in a mocking way - the internet demons especially had no sense of propriety. Say what you like about the demon responsible for the Black Plague, but at least that one had been polite.

"M1str3ss, 1 c0m3 b34r1ng n3ws!" Young demons were annoying as hell. "Y0u 4r3 r3qu3st3d 2 4tt3nd 4 m33t1ng by that *censored* *censored* *censored* Alan Ross. Condition Black he says!"

You'd worked with Alan Ross before, and every time before he'd gotten Dr. Oblivion, the master mage, to contact you. That he didn't take the time this time is some cause for concern. Something must be wrong, terribly wrong.
OOC wrote: So first of all I apologize for the terrible l33t speak. I'm bad at it. The demon said, "You're requested to attend a meeting by Alan Ross, Condition Black." You've never heard of condition black, but you assume it must be bad. Obviously your reserve Guardsmen Communicator doesn't work in the hell dimension, but you can teleport directly to the Guardtower where you'll be directed downstairs to the inner sanctum. We'll say you get there just as everyone else does.

Bullet - Scott Parker
HP = 1, Cond = Fine

"... I can't tell him"
"Come on Scott"
"Ruth, please. You know what he's like. He loves anyone with a cape. If he finds out I'm Bullet I just know he'd boast about it. Most would ignore him cos he's just a kid, but those that don't..."
"I'm just tired of lying to our son Scott. You've done so much these past few years, but this 'job' of yours..."
"I know. I know". The last was said with a resigned sigh. Scott had come over to his ex-wife's home to drop some of his son's things off and, as always, it had devolved into the same conversation topics over and over: how dangerous both his jobs were, how he could be doing more to be involved, how everything he did kept a distance between him and his boy. Everything he did was in good faith to keep his son safe, but even Scott had to admit that he was more often a stranger than a father. 12 years old and all the boy ever knew was a soldier, a drunk, and now a cop.

An uncomfortable silence hung in the air at the end of the conversation, but was thankfully brought to a close by the interruption of Scott's Guardian communicator. "Condition Black. Guardtower ASAP". He frowned at the message and, speaking to the air more than anyone else, mutters "What the hell is condition black?". In not time at all his clothes have disappeared and he stands wearing his distinctive gunmetal grey bodysuit, with only his lower face clearly showing through. He looks toward his ex with an apologetic stare.
"Just go" she says, not wanting to aruge. "And be careful"
"I will"
"And remember..." but it was too late. He was already gone.

********************

A heartbeat later and Bullet was standing in the lower levels of the Guardtower. Nodding at the other figures around him, he took stock of the faces/masks he recognised. Johnny, Epic, and Allure he'd seen around quite a bit, but he wasn't so familiar with Premiere or Lucrecia. Turning to Artemis, Scott voices a simple question:"Any idea what's going on?"
ooc wrote: Scott's costume is essentially the same styling as the Flash. All-over bodysuit with over-the-head face mask. There's not a lot of detailing to it and it's gunmetal grey in colour

Johnny Liang
HP:1
Condition: Fine

Johnny Liang, the Master of the Liang school of Martial Arts, along with a small handful of students who stayed over from the early morning class were methodically mopping the second floor training area of the Dojo. Two of the younger students had dry cloths in their hands and were running up and down the now shiny floors with their hands holding down the cloths and their behinds high in the air. It was the same way that he had used to dry and shine the floor when his father had been the one mopping.

“Prometheus brought fire to man.” Johnny continued, they were in the middle of a serious discussion like they always were when they cleaned, “He stole it from the gods, we all know that, but it wasn’t literal fire that he stole it was divine fire. In each man a spark of this divine fire was placed.” His eyes weren’t raised from the floor as he pushed and pulled his mop, “The spark in me comes from the same flame that’s in your spark Everett, or in you Jamie or even in you, little Nykisha.” The students that he named off were the ones listening to him speak as they leaned against their mops or stopped their buffing just to listen, the ones who weren’t both listening and working. They quickly got back to doing both at the same time.

“That spark is another classical example of the connection between us all. The spark in each of us is just a small flicker of a much larger fire.” His father had used a long list of myths and legends from various regions to help teach the student about the connection between everyone. “Of course the gods then behaved like douches and chained him to a—“

“SIFU!”

Johnny is startled at hearing someone downstairs shouting for him, “SIFU JOHNNY! THIS THING IS TALKING AND BEEPING FOR YOU!”

Johnny lifted the mop from the floor and then rung it out over the bucket before he nodded to the senior student in the room and then went down the stairs two step at a time. As soon as he exited the narrow stairwell he was in the middle of another group of students who were stretching out on the floor. Another older student was running them through the motions that would relax them, stretch them and familiarize them with movements that would be important for later lessons. Johnny stopped to correct the posture of one student before he stepped into the small cramped office area.

When his father was alive it was organized and you could always find what you were looking for, now it had stacks and stacks of paper everywhere. Johnny had let brother Quinn take over the paper work and he was more slovenly then Johnny liked. Brother Quinn was there holding out the Guardsmen communicator to him. He hadn’t really worn it as a watch like he was supposed to. His father had worn it faithfully though.

“It just started talking Sifu.” Quinn was thirty years older than he was, he had changed Johnny’s diapers as a child and he had no qualms with calling Johnny Master, it was still strange to Johnny though. “Something about a Code Black, it doesn’t sound good.”

Johnny nods, “Would it be a problem for you to take care of the afternoon class? I was going to introduce them to the boxing dummies today, some Wing Chun.”

Quinn ran a hand over his balding head, “Shouldn’t be a problem, I was just going to organize some papers today…”

Johnny stopped at that for a second, a code black problem or finally get the office cleaned, it was tempting to just ignore the wrist watch communicator… No. It was important and Paladin didn’t call him often. He slipped on the watch and buckled it on. His wrist was a little thicker than his fathers and the hard plastic was still used to the contours of his father’s wrist.

“Don’t forget to teach them the Chinese names for the counters, they’re in Father’s Wing Chun manual if you can’t remember them. Take some time to review them for yourself before class.”

Quinn waved his hand and nodded at Johnny as the young man turned and grabbed an old leather bound journal from the shelf, “You forget Sifu that I was the one that taught you how to use the boxing dummies.” He laughed at that for a second before Johnny sat the leather book in front of him. The former masters pen work easily recognizable as the words and pictures showed the various beginner parries.

“Yes you did Brother Quinn and I remember that I was very confused for a very long time when father would call out one pattern and I would get punched in the face. For some reason the names were confused in my mind.” Johnny left the room as Quinn stared at the book shocked for a few seconds.

“My bad Sifu!” He called behind him, “But these names really are qui…”

Quinns excuse trailed off behind him as Johnny stepped out of the school and out onto the street. He looked down at the communicator and tried to remember how to do this. His father had explained it years before and then Paladin had explained again to him a few years before during the whole Dorian Gray thing. He took a guess and pressed down on a small button and then the world collapsed around him.

+++++++++++++++++++

Johnny didn’t even have time to scream out in terror as he was teleported from the city street to the Guardtower, “Had I known that would work like that I would’ve put on a shirt…”

Johnny looked around him to see that he was teleported in the same area as a group of other people, he recognized a few of them, liked the vibes of the people he didn’t out and out recognize. He stood there in his track pants and workout shoes a little self conscious about his state of dress. “So, a code black huh?” He said to no one in particular.

Rook - Lucrecia
HP:1
Condition: Fine

Private Blake struggled to his feet from where he had lost his balance and fallen over. Throwing an embarrassed glance over at his Lieutenant, he tried to regain his composure. Fumbling to pick up his dropped side arm, he stared in stunned silence at the new arrival standing in the middle of the empty roof deck.

It wasn't that he was surprised by her arrival. In fact, he had been expecting it. A quarter of an hour ago, Guardtower command had issued the order for the roof deck to be vacated by all non-Guardtower personnel. Apparently some VIP was en route, and Blake's unit had been assigned to the welcoming committee.

What caught him by surprise was the manner of her arrival. It had been a bright sunny morning, when all of a sudden the sky darkened, the wind howled, and a crackling vortex of swirling crimson light formed just just above the surface of the roof deck. Moments later a green-skinned figure garbed in a white cloak and tunic emerged from within it. Hovering in the air momentarily, it landed lightly on the deck as the maelstrom slowly shrank into nothingness, its energies ebbing away until the vortex disappeared. Caught off guard and not knowing quite how to react, Blake had taken a nervous step back and had inadvertently tripped on his own feet.

If Blake's Lieutenant was upset over his subordinate's clumsiness, he didn't show it. Instead he kept his attention fixed on the newcomer. Taking a step toward her, he snapped off a quick salute before speaking.

"Greetings, Madam Rook", he said in a gruff but respectful voice. "Welcome to the Guardtower. Mr. Ross has been expecting you." Gesturing toward the entrance to the stairwell, he nods slightly. "If you'll follow me, we have orders to escort you to the teleportation chamber."

"You can do away with the honorifics, Lieutenant," Lucrecia replied. "It's just Rook." Turning her head, her gaze met Blake's just as the latter finished pulling himself to his feet. "I'm sorry, did I startle you?" she asked gently. She had seen the anxious expression on his face, and was trying to put him at ease. "Don't worry, my looks may be a bit offputting, but I don't bite." she said.

Blake opened his mouth as if to speak, but no words came out. Obviously rattle by her appearance, all he could manage as response was a quick nod.

"I'm sorry Ma'am, but we really should get going. The meeting is of the utmost importance." the Lieutenant said.

"Very well, lead on." Lucrecia said, following the officer's lead as his subordinates quickly fell in behind her.

-------------------------------

Moments later, Lucrecia found herself standing with several others in Alan Ross's personal sanctum. She didn't recognize too many faces; The only two who seemed familiar were Big and Artemis.

"What's going on?" she asks in a concerned voice, glancing around the room. She wasn't sure what exactly was going on, but if the Guardsmen saw fit to call her away from her Guardian duties and gather this many "superheroes" at once, something big was definitely going down.

The fact that Ross had chosen to contact her through different means then usual also bothered her. Perhaps Dr. Oblivion was missing. Perhaps he was in trouble?
OOC: Lucrecia is dressed in a white full-body cloak which she wears over a similarly colored tunic. She possesses features and a figure that would probably be considered attractive if not for her unsettling green skin tone and the short, goat-like horns on her head.

Premier
HP:1
Condition: Fine

Premier sat in a busy Miami park on a temperate autumn day. Children ran by playing but many stopped to stare at him in shock when they noticed the blue skinned giant. Premier’s attention was focused on a chess board in front of him. He raised one massive hand and scratched at his head in confusion, “This game is very confusing, Kimberly. Why does Premier need to learn it?”

A young pretty blond girl of about 17 sits across the table from him. She hides a laugh behind a hand but her body lightly shakes from merriment. “Premier chess is a game of generals and kings. It can teach you mental discipline and tactics. The best way to beat an opponent is to outsmart them.”

He raises one massive hand before her curling and uncurling his sausage sized fingers, “Premier has always found the best way to beat an opponent was to hit it with his fists. Premier also thinks you are making a joke at his expense?” Several children run into the distance terrified at this display.

Kim rises from the table and takes Premier’s hand in both of hers kissing the back of his knuckles. “Premier you are very powerful, but you cannot always solve all of your problems with your powers. You also need to cultivate your mind to reach your full potential.” She raps his head with her knuckles. At that moment a buzz emanates from his communicator.

“What is that, Premier?” Kim inquires.

“Bad trouble. I must go.” Premier steps back from Kimberly and flies into the air pointing himself north. After reaching a safe height he accelerates to his full speed heading towards New York.

In less than 10 minutes the GuardTower comes into view. He enters the building and soon finds himself among several unfamiliar people. He approaches the only one he is familiar with. “Epic do you know what’s going on?”

Allure
HP: 1
Condition: Fine.

Allure was in the middle of a session with Black-Jack, a young super that had anger issues stemming from his father's way of raising him and his 2 younger brothers, when the call came in "Condition Black. Guardtower ASAP".
"Hmm. I'm gonna have to take this Jack. Are you open for continuing tomorrow? I think we are getting to a root cause of where your anger stems from, I'd love to see if we can push through."
"Yeah, I could come back t'morrow Ms. Allure."
"Perfect, I'll see you tomorrow then." she smiled to him as she lead him out of the room and pushed the teleport button on her comm, placing her among the heroes assembled, with a few appearing just moments after her.
"Code Black, I don't think I ever heard that one. Anyone know what it means?" she said as she stripped from her feminine business suit to reveal her combat armor under it hugging her skin almost like a second skin except in places to be modest.

Johnny shrugged for what felt like a half dozen times in as many minutes, "Black is the color that doesn't reflect light. In China the color represents Yin, the masculine, it's also the color we associate with north and water. I don't think any of that really matters on a color code system though..." Johnny crossed his arms in front of him, suddenly self conscious concerning his nipples and the temperature of the room.

"Sorry, I ramble when I'm nervous." Johnny shook his head and laughed a little bit. "This is so weird..."

Big looks down (way way way down) at the lot of you - even Premiere, and he's not at all used to people towering over him. But Big is, well, Big. She frowns at Johnny's statement not so much because she doesn't approve, but because she feels like the boy looks familiar. Maybe it was his father?

"I know there's been an Earthquake in Wichita. Network sent a group there this morning to help with the recovery, but they've been off the comms for a while now. He was going to send me and Arty down, but just a moment ago we received a message scrapping the mission and to come here." She speaks with a slight southern accent that sounds like grits and deviled eggs.

Artemis sighs, "For the last time 'Licia, don't call me Arty. Artemis, fine, but Arty makes me sound like...like...like my father. And he was an ass."

Big just smiles, but then the amusement quickly goes away, "I have a bad feeling about this."

EPIC (Leon Gallant)
HP: 1
CND: No Damage

Leon wasn't doing much at the moment. A rare lazy day for him really. He was sure there was some crime happening somewhere, but he's waste more time trying to find it than it took to commit the crime, making it a wasted effort. He didn't want to make it seem like Epic was tyranting the skies just LOOKING for crooks to put down.

He'd done some laundry, watched a movie, and it was still early! Checking his watch, he saw about quarter to ten. Well, maybe a jog or something. Maybe it was just going to be a slow crime day or something.
"Condition Black Guardtower ASAP"
'Condition black'..? Never heard that one before...and something tells me it's worse than red. I'd better get over there. Taking a quick look around to make sure no-one was around watching, Leon concentrate for a scant second, making the transformation into Epic, his alter biology altering his appearance from dirty blonde hair with gray-blue eyes to silver eyes and silver hair with a white fringe, a costume done in shades of silver and white with a slight aura of glowing bio energy around him remnant from the transition.

Teleporting felt really strange and it was disorienting. You would be standing facing one way, looking at something, the you press the button and your orientation doesn't change, but your position jumps miles away from where you were. It was something Leon felt he'd never get used to, and despite being able to hit the sound barrier, it was still quicker, and something told him he needed to be there. He pressed the button...

And appeared at the Guardtower amongst his peers in the superheroing world. Granted he didn't know most of them, Big and Artemis he was familiar with, he learned a few things from Big about using the oversized fists he could project, and Artemis hardly needed an introduction with his reputation. The others he knew of in varying degrees of familiarity ranging from 'not at all' to 'teamed up once or twice'.

Looking at Rook and Allure, then the big (though not 'Big' big) guy addressing him, Epic shrugs he shoulders. "No idea big guy. By the looks of it, we all got the same cryptic message that didn't come with any sort of explanation. I just know I really don't like the sound of it. Like he said.." gesturing at Johnny "...black isn't always bad. Unfortunately, urgency typically is, and urgency with black makes me worry."

There’s a door on the far side of the room that’s been closed and locked since you walked in. Now it opens and out walks a thin man. As he walks in the north wall comes alive as a massive screen. Very few people have ever actually met Network. He's always simply been words that appear on a computer screen, or a voice that you hear over the radio, there to direct you when things go badly. He looks almost sickly, which is compounded by the dark circles under his eyes. He looks like he hasn't slept in days. He looks defeated.

When he walks in, he doesn't even bother to introduce himself. You know who he is.

"Thank you for coming swiftly. We don't have much time, so please forgive my bluntness in what you're about to hear. And please, save your questions until the end. You'll find that we don't have many answers yet."

He shifts weight, what there is of him (the man seriously looks like he weighs maybe 100 lbs standing at 5'10"), uncomfortably, but continues.

“This morning at approximately 7:30 am Adam Wellaby was found dead in his apartment, stabbed 14 times with an Impervium Shiv. Most of you know Adam by his other name, Paladin.” He holds his hand up at the inevitable din of questions and shocked exclamations that come. “Please. Dr. Oblivion, and Bloodhound are already on site leading the investigation. They’ve asked for you Artemis to go there and see what you can see. Big I’m sending you because Julia, his fiance, is a wreck, and you’ve got good bedside manner. If you go upstairs the teleporters have been re-calibrated to send you there right away.”

The two look at each other and look at the rest of you. Artemis recovers first, and stutters, “Y..y..yes...S-s-sure thing. I---I’m sorry.” He looks like he wants to say something else, but he’s completely floored. Tears are coming from his eyes. He hesitates a moment longer before walking back out towards the teleportation chamber.

Big is about to follow him, and then hesitates for a moment. She looks back to Network. “We’ll find the person who did this Alan. And then we’ll rip him to shreds.” She follows her friend.

As they leave Alan Ross shifts his attention to the six of you. "I've called you here for a different reason..."

Dead.... that....it sounds so unreal... mean...we're talking about freaking PALADIN here. Who could sneak up on the guy, much less get close enough to use a freaking shiv?! Leon tries to maintain a steady outward appearance, a stance of stoicism in an effort to try and keep things calm. Not that he looks cold or distance, the tense set of his spine makes him look ready to go hunt down whoever did this and put the guy in a cell...about six feet under ground, six feet by by one foot by 2 feet.

"What's the mission Network?" His voice is hard, focusing on what he can do, which is to keep doing his job. It's hard, because everyone knew Paladin. He was a great guy, everyone counted on him, and everyone would feel his loss. Leon couldn't imagine what Paladin's WIFE must be going through with this. no, the least they could do is keep business moving and try to fill the void....it felt like one big ass void...

Rook - Lucrecia
HP:1
Condition: Fine

"What?!"

Lucrecia stared at Network, the disbelief evident in her voice and in her expression. "This has to be some kind of joke, right?"

Still, somehow she knew it wasn't. The grim expression on Ross's face gave it all away. He was serious. Dead serious, in fact. "How did he... Who could have... Why would someone..." she stammered, her voice trailing off as she sank slowly into a seat. There were far too many questions that she wanted to ask, but something told her it would probably be best too just listen to what Network had to say for now.

Johnny Liang
HP:1

Paladin was dead. Johnny looked at the people gathered around him and it was no wonder that they were all summoned together like this. It wasn’t to inform them of the death of the world’s greatest hero it was because there was a problem that normally the Paladin himself would take care of but now Network needed them to do this. Paladin wasn’t just dead he was murdered, stabbed to death. Paladin was a good man; he came to his father’s funeral. He offered his condolences and shared stories with Johnny of the heroics of Louie Liang. He had given Johnny pictures that he had of he and Louie in action. They fought side by side against evil.

Johnny would have to return those pictures and those memories to Paladins family, he would have to box up those photos and journals again and pay a visit to Paladins wife. He also had some stories to share regarding an adventure or two he had with the man. Paladin would have to be avenged but the man had lived a life that would be remembered forever. His family deserved to have every story of the man available to them. He knew that he had a journal that his father had kept of his adventures with the Paladin, he would never part with it forever but perhaps he could loan it to the Paladins fiancé…
