The LC Foundation [IC] Ep. 1: A Matter of Awareness

Postby Coyotzin » Sun Dec 01, 2013 7:21 pm

There was a certain buzz in the atmosphere since morning at the LC Foundation.

Everybody knew about the reason, following Mr. Jupiter's policy of open communication and disclosure. Every message board in the different walls had carried the flyer announcing this day, where a special commission from the United Nations would come to take a tour of the facilities, meet the staff and some of the guests, all in order to give the Foundation an official recognition and participation in UNESCO and UNICEF programs.

The announcement had served too as advance warning for those who did not wish to be seen by international authorities and the couple of press members who would be with them. A couple of volunteers suspected of being criminals were absent, and while the facilities tended to have one or two Themyscirans at any time, today there were none.

Booster Gold was here for the first time, though, awkwardly trying to entertain a group of children with exaggerated tales of heroics.

Many staff members were not entirely happy with the state of affairs, and their complaints had been heard and a few changes to schedules were made, like the changes Mr. Chesterfield had added to the non-disclosure form the visitors would sign before being allowed through the New York teleportal.

The teleportal control room was a beehive of activity, overlooking the dozen pads that linked to the many counterparts built in offices around the world. Technically, they only needed one, as they could switch their teleportation targets, but having so many guaranteed a free flow of traffic in and out of the actual Foundation facilities, especially if there was an emergency.

"Third guy on the left." One of the operators pointed at the monitor with the feed from the New York offices, where the UN delegation was waiting for teleportation clearance. "The Seer raised a red flag on him; can I get a background check?"

"Frederick Rochester; works at UNESCO's office for... whoa, whoa.... face recognition got a hit... he's a former Cadmus employee!"

"Ok, tell NY security to ask him to leave. If the Seer doesn't like him, he must be not so former as he says he is."

"Oi, got a green flag from the Seer, this from the Gotham offices; some school trip from Gotham U. Can I get a background check on Timothy Wayne and Cassandra Wayne?"

"Here... nothing unusual except they are Bruce Wayne's adoptees. The boy's biological father was an archaeologist with a couple of supernatural hits on his file. The girl came here on January for... literacy remediation courses. We have a file on her, but it has a patient disclosure lock."

"Huh, you think Wayne is sending his kids to spy on us?"

"No idea, but the flag is green, so let them through, just keep an eye on them."

"Holy crap! I knew we'd be getting more attention today, but look who's knocking on the L.A. offices!"

"That's... Jade, aka Jennifer-Lynn Hayden; I thought she was dead."

"Our files are still being updated from that Black Lanterns fiasco. Seems she's bringing in a homeless woman."

"Huh... There's a yellow flag from the Seer. Facial recognition pegs her as Hyppolita Hall. Former superheroine. There's a police file on her as missing."

"Well, she looks in a very sorry state. Let them come before the UN delegates, and let's send a welcoming party."

OOC: Toby would know both Jade and Hippolyta Hall, as they too are children of superheroes. The Shield definitely knows them, as they are children of old JSA members. If you didn't figure it out already, Timothy and Cassandra Wayne are Red Robin and Black Bat, respectively :) You have three options: receive Jade and Lyta, shadow Tim and Cass, and hang out with the UN mission. Introduce your characters in your posts, and choose your mission! :)

Toby Chesterfield
HP: 1 / LP: 3

The big day such as this had not produced an extreme workload for Toby, though he had been assigned as the designated guide for the Gotham University tour. In his opinion though, Mr. Jupiter had planned well, and all the staff and old standbys were pitching in their best.

Magna, Harry and Allyson especially, which made him proud to see his vested efforts in the LC Foundation working out so well. And this wouldn't be hard to guide an interdisciplinary band of college students, would it?

Security sent him the green flag and notice a minute later. Toby felt his mood darken and worked to dispel it from his mind and counternance. "Thank you, I'll note that."

Their concern was warranted, though not quite for the exact reasons Security was picturing. Batman couldn't leave well enough alone, could he? Fine... Toby could talk with Mr. Jupiter later. And sneak a message of displeasure to the Bat-kin present as well.
Impeach the peach!

Dr. Milo Whittman
Hp: 1

It was the big day for the UN tour, and it seemed like almost everyone was brimming with excitement. Even Milo was feeling a little nervous as he sat in his office. He knew that, at most, the tour group would come by the medical wing of the Foundation and ask some questions about the facilities, but the fact that it was the United Nations coming to visit still gave him butterflies in his stomach. However, any nervousness he felt vanished when he got the alert about Hippolyta Hall and the poor state she seemed in.

Grabbing his lab coat off the back of his chair, Dr. Milo Whittman quickly made his way over to the teleporters to make sure the woman was alright.

Maggie smiled. She always smiled. She smiled while proffering a box of Krispy Kreme donuts to her fellows from the LC Foundation, she smiled when Dr. Paul Harris told her that they would get a chance to help out the U.N. Security measures, and that it would help her status with the Foundation and show her level of reform. She smiled and nodded when he told her that she shouldn't do anything confrontational or aggressive - she was only to use her abilities as a walking metal detector to identify what items people might have on them from a distance and alert someone on the security detail to the possible threat. And she smiled as, from a discrete distance, she dictated through a radio they's given her for this purpose.

"... man in blue suit - cellphone, keys, wire-rim glasses in suit pocket; older man with red tie - keys, zippo lighter, metal pins in right hip, something that could be a pacemaker; woman in mother-of-pearl blouse - purse contains cellphone, flashlight, nail clippers with file, sewing needle, small scissors, and... ummm.... she has under-wires in her bra..." she reports uncertainly. Maybe it would help the Security agents to know these things....

Dr. D.E. Mente

Postby Evolución » Mon Dec 02, 2013 6:06 am

Mente's usual stoic face was replaced today with a side way smile. He has been pushing Jupiter to get the UN recognition. Not because of the money, hell, Jupiter might as have more money than them, but for the increase in the prospect of "inmates" the foundation could get. It meant getting to more people, and extending their protective wing over more needing souls. Or that's what he said, but the chance to get more extraordinary patients to innovate in his therapy was a strong drive for him. He had been waiting for the UN delegates at the teleportal room, watching with interest the other incoming guests. He had to bite his underlip when Hippolyta Hall showed up, but he could get a shot at her later. His appointed job was to lead the tour through the facilities and get the recognition the Foundation needed.
Clearing his throat, he patiently waited for the delegates to make their entrance.

The Shield
Harry Mackenzie
HP: 1 Status: Normal

Harry frowned and shifted his tie uncomfortably. It had taken him years to get used to the monkey suit he'd had to wear while working as a masked hero, but in all that time he'd never spent much time in a business suit. And the few times he had to it always made him feel uncomfortable.

He'd been in enough fights to know you didn't want to have anything that made itself available as a handle. The concept of wearing a noose around one's neck was just insane. But it was part of the fashion and he couldn't just wear a flannel shirt today.

He wasn't exactly a member of the Foundation itself, but his company did a lot of work for them and over the years he'd spent more and more time helping out at the Foundation.

Especially after he'd brought Maggie to the Foundation.

Somewhere along the lines he found himself doing more and more around the place until today when he was wrangled in for the big UN meeting. And here he was, dressed to the nines waiting for what would likely be a long boring day of shaking hands, smiling at bad jokes, and pretending to be interested in what ever it was the self important busybodies were focusing on to the exclusion of all else.

It wasn't that he hated politicians, it was just that very few of them seemed to be worth their salt. So it was no surprise he found himself a reason to "check in" at the teleportal control room instead of waiting for the delegates to arrive. For the sake of security, of course.

He watched out a window to where Maggie stood.

She seemed to be doing better these days.

His mind wandered for a moment until one of the operators expressed surprise. He glanced up and saw Jennifer on one of the screens. He managed to peg the other face only a second before the computer did.

"I'll meet Jade myself," Harry offered firmly, already moving towards the embarkation room.

Allyson considers the options of assignments and decides to go with the lawyer to meet with the Wayne kids. She'd not had any contact with the Waynes before, but she knew of them and was curious how they differed from a girl like her who came from a small town.

"Mister Chesterfield, wait up. I'll go along with you."

There's already a large group gathered around the teleportal room. Staff and volunteers could be told apart by the colored bar on their badges, and by the fact that most volunteers were wearing theirs hanging around their necks while staff had theirs clipped to their clothes. There was also a sizeable group of guests, most of them children quelling their curiosity, and their guardians keeping a mindful eye on them.

"Arrival from Los Angeles; medical priority, please make way." An operator's voice came through a speaker, and after a flash of light, a couple of women appeared on one of the circular pads.

They were like night and day. One, was well-dressed and downright gorgeous, even her green skin and hair adding to her allure. The one she was supporting was a sorry mess; malnutrition-thin and dirty, the remains of a white shirt and jeans holding together by sheer despair. Her hair was long and matted, and it was hard to tell if it was white because of premature aging or because she was a platinum blonde. Crazed sky-blue eyes darted back and forth, and cracked lips kept muttering.

Milo and Harry walked forth to receive them.

"Mr. Mackenzie...?" The green-skinned beauty blinked in surprise, but then was somewhat relieved to see a familiar face.

They talked as they walked into the complex, towards the medical wing.

"Arrival from Gotham; open portal protocol for large group; please make way."

The flash of light this time became a shimmering in the air through which stepped an academic-looking man and several young men and women staring in wonder around them. A security guard prompted them to get out of the teleportation pads quickly. Toby walked forth to welcome them, with Allyson tagging along.

"Mister Chesterfield? I'm professor Harrington from Gotham University's Social Studies department; thank you for receiving us; I understand this is a busy day for the Foundation."

All pleasantries aside, Toby spotted the targets, recognizing them from the surveillance shots the control room had sent to his phone. He frowned a little when he realized that he didn't know them, even if the young man bore strikingly similar features to Dick Grayson, the young man Toby had often trained with, who once was called Robin, and now Nightwing. He was doubly surprised to see him walking with the aid of crutches, the girl besides him helping him move. He didn't know her either; a slim and unassuming girl with vaguely Asian features. Their eyes crossed, and Toby shuddered. Those eyes had taken his measure in an instant, and she whispered something to her adoptive brother, who succeeded in not looking at Toby directly.

Allyson caught Toby's reaction, but the Wayne kids didn't look like that much. Sure, the boy was rather cute, and he might even be close to her age, but the girl looked rather defensive. Despite the boy's crutches, the pair melted away into their group.

But business was business, and soon Toby and Allyson led the college students towards their scheduled tour.

In the New York office, Maggie was going through the metallic belongings of the UN and press group as they waited for final clearance. One man had a small swiss army knife as a keychain, another had some pins embedded on his right leg's bones, another had a round medallion under his clothes that would probably be very tacky if worn outside, and... and she recognized the items in the purse of one of the reporters, that was a set of lockpicks if she could trust the unpleasant memories of her criminal past.

Back in the Foundation, the remaining group buzzed in excitement as an elderly man walked in, parting the crowd even as he had a smile and a greeting for everyone. Loren Jupiter, here to receive the UN delegation.

"Doctor Mente, glad you could join us." Jupiter nodded at the resident genius psychologist, but then he turned to address the people gathered. "My friends, this is a great opportunity for us, but it's not the end of the world. I mean, it's just the United Nations, right?"

He chuckled, and the crowd chuckled with him, tension evaporating.

"Rest assured that the future of the Foundation is not in the balance. Working with the UN will let us extend our hands to more people who need our help, but our continued work does not depend on their say so. So let's welcome them not just as equals, but as friends who have the same goal in mind: making our world a better place for everyone."

OOC: The UN contingent has not teleported yet, so I'm having Maggie be part of the clearance detail in New York; Harry saw her through a monitor rather than a window. For Loren Jupiter's apperance, imagine the love child between Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart, and you'll be close :).

There's so much fan fiction written on that very topic

Maggie turned up her coat at the New York chill. Conveniently, it had the mic for the radio piece. clipped to it. She wasn't even certain who was on the receiving end of the transmission

"Man in the grey suit - a small swiss army knife with his keys; The older man next to him - pins in his right fibula, nearer the lateral malleolus." She said, proudly putting her scant medical knowledge to use.
"The guy in the blue blazer has a unique pendant or medallion he is concealing under his shirt, either because it is a mystical artifact he's trying to smuggle in or because it was a hideous gift from his significant other and he'd feel guilty for taking it off. The woman in the back with the scarf and the reporter's badge has... oh Dear Me, a set of lockpicks in her purse. Now, she may just be a plucky investigative reporter, but I'm fairly certain those were on the contraband list. Ummm... Hello?"

"We're not getting any more flags from the Seer, but ask her to leave those at the desk, Miss Kale." Came the answer from the brand new earpiece the guys from security had given her.

Maggie was not the only one who didn't know who or what the Seer was. She doubted even the people from Security were altogether sure, but whatever it or who it turned out to be, it had always been reliable at spotting possible threats to the Foundation at the branch offices.

The reporter in question was jotting something on an iPad as the group waited to be allowed inside. Like the other journalists, she was wearing not only the Foundation-issued visitor's badge, but her press credentials as well.

Lois Lane, Daily Planet.

Maggie Kale

Maggie froze, but... that was confrontational... She couldn't.... could she....? She was being told to.... but... could she? She walked forward almost in a daze.
Yes... you heard them. They're telling you to rip out her eyes. What kind of name is Lois Lane anyway. Born victim if ever I saw one. Take her, do it!
Maggie brushed away some hair from her face and she cleared her throat.

Maggie brandished her volunteer badge like a shield in front of her.
"Umm... Ms. Lane. Hi. I'm a... I'm a volunteer with the LC Foundation. You have some contraband items in your purse. Specifically a set of lockpicks.... i...in your purse. You can check them in at the desk..., over there, please. Else... um... I'm afraid you won't be able to go on to the facilities. Sorry." she smiles apologetically.

"Huh...?" The black-haired reporter has a second of surprise at Maggie's approach, but it is quickly shut down and replaced with a quizzical look. She looks left and right and gently nudges Maggie a couple of steps away from the group.

"How did you know that? There's no x-ray machine around... unless. You must be one of the metahumans volunteering at the Foundation, right... Margret? Can I call you Margret? You can call me Lois."

The woman smiled after peering at Maggie's badge.

"Wait... Margret Kale?" She stroked some virtual keys on the keypad. "Ah, I see... Francesca Margret Kale; you must be one of the Foundation's success stories, right? With your rap sheet and all. I'll tell you what. I'll give you my lockpicks if you give me an interview later, deal?"

OOC: Make an Insight or Will check, whichever is higher to resist being Fascinated by Lois Lane's Persuasion check. At a -2 please, and get a HP because Lois is leveraging your criminal past Complication ;).

The woman didn't stop talking, and she knew! She knew who she was! Maybe if she nodded and smiled the woman would just shut up and go away? Apparently, there was an exchange because Maggie was holding a small wallet-like thing with the lockpicks inside, and Miss Lane was winking at her after... oh, boy, after Maggie had given her her private cellphone number and apparently agreed to an interview!!

OOC: That's what it means :) Lois Lane talks her way through you, but she's a woman of her word and you have her lockpicks... and an appointment ;)

"Good job, Miss Kale... I think." The voice from the security operator woke Maggie from the confused daze. "Allright, everybody's cleared to go."

The elevator-like doors at the back of the room opened to reveal three teleportation pads; the UN group and their press entourage followed instructions and stepped orderly into the shimmer in the air that swallowed and took them to their destination.

And Maggie was thankfully back home.

OOC: And that's it for the little side scene, and time for me to go to bed ;)

Dr. DE Mente

Postby Evolución » Tue Dec 03, 2013 6:29 am

"It's my pleasure Mr. Jupiter." Mente replied, hands in his pockets. Jupiter was a big question mark in Mente's records, he had not been subject to analysis and the few occasions where he had a chance to interact with him had been similar to this: meetings with a lot of other people around, in front og whom the lead of the Foundation had to maintain a facade and an image. The man was either an only child, spoiled and with fear of failure, hence his cheap jokes to dissipate tense situations, or that was the screen he held up whenever he had chance to see him act. Daniel sighed. He needed to stop doing that all the time.
He was wearing, as for Tabitha's suggestion, a high turtle collar long sleeved T-shirt instead of a shirt under his suit's coat. It made him look more like a shrink. Apparently, being psychoanalyzed by surprise was something people considered rude, so he had to look like a shrink so people would expect him to do his shrinky thing on them. Mente had decided to drop the possible argument, and please the woman this time. He actually had to go buy one of those turtle collar t-shirts.
"Given that you are here now, I presume you will be leading the tour yourself?" Mente inquired, leaning sideways to et a little more closer to Jupiter.
