Kicking

Postby CodeNameBob » Mon Aug 01, 2005 9:26 am

I've been thinking about a new rule involving kicking as an unarmed strike; if you choose to kick as an unarmed strike then you take -1 to the attack, +4 to the damage bonus and your opponant gets a free trip attemt.

In my opinion, your damage bonus is too high. A +4 damage makes your unarmed strike equivalent to a sword.

I would just suggest -2 to attack and +1 to damage (basic kick) or -4 attack, +2 damage (for a really powerful roundhouse or jump kick). I wouldn't suggest an even -1/+1 attack/damage, because that's what the All-Out Attack feat is for. Also, drop the trip attempt mechanic. You can trip someone that is kicking you, but it would require you to ready an action to catch his leg.

I’d say that the Free Trip Attempt is too much of a Negative – Who’d want to play a Martial Artist with that kind of penalty.

Every Tank would be throwing him on the ground after each attack – even if all he was doing was stomping on their foot.

Personally unless I'm playing using HERO's ultimate martial artist.

An unarmed strike can be any of the following
punch, roundhouse, haymaker, kick, crescent kick, knee to the groin, elbow smash, karate chop, shin kick, headbutt, etc, etc, etc.

It's just a descriptor (see today's supervision article) for a standard effect.

Adding extra mechanics will only cloud the matter.

So as I mentioned unless style and form are the focus of the campaign (not just the character) I'd avoid creating kick mechanics,

Oh, and by the way, I don't use drawbacks in my game, just complications.

I'm pretty sure Unarmed strike is anything you do to hit them with your body.

oh what he said.

Does anyone else suddenly think that Bob's pic from the Incredibles looks a LOT like Georgia's Runaway bride?

in champaign settings, I have a post regarding an anime-style game, My friends and I are all playtesting this whole oriental assess and attack type deal, with full regards towards to different attacks, styles of martial arts and recongizing and customizing attacks mid battle.

most of which blows and is way to complicated for this game

but it all seems to work on paper!
