Quickness and speed questions

Postby baixiwei » Fri Jul 04, 2008 1:11 am

(1) do you have to take 20 when performing an action using quickness? Or is "can take 20" just a way of deciding to which actions quickness can apply?

(2) how does Quickness relate to action types (full, standard, move, free)? I assume if something would normally take a minute, 3 ranks of Quickness changes that to a full-round action. If you have more Quickness, does it then reduce to a move action or free action? Exactly what is the conversion?

(3) instead of using Quickness to reduce the time required to do X, can you use it to do X multiple times in the same amount of time? E.g. Quickness 3 reduces a minute-long action to a full-round action, could Quickness 5 then allow you to do it 5 times in a full-round?

(4) does Quickness apply to "Manipulate an Object"? If so, since this is usually a move action, does sufficient Quickness reduce it to a free action?

(5) if Quickness can reduce actions to free actions, and higher Quickness permit large numbers of free actions, the question arises whether these free actions interrupt movement or can be performed simultaneously with movement. E.g. a speedster wants to run through a building (move action) and open all of its doors (each one a move action, but reducible to free actions by (4) above). Can he do it in one move action (without move-by action)? Or is his move action ended when he opens the first door?

The latter.

(2) how does Quickness relate to action types (full, standard, move, free)? I assume if something would normally take a minute, 3 ranks of Quickness changes that to a full-round action. If you have more Quickness, does it then reduce to a move action or free action? Exactly what is the conversion?

It isn't exact, because Quickness tends to deal with non-combat actions. However, I'd say each "step" reduction past a full round moves it down one (to standard, move, and then free action).

(3) instead of using Quickness to reduce the time required to do X, can you use it to do X multiple times in the same amount of time? E.g. Quickness 3 reduces a minute-long action to a full-round action, could Quickness 5 then allow you to do it 5 times in a full-round?

Potentially, depending on the action.

(4) does Quickness apply to "Manipulate an Object"? If so, since this is usually a move action, does sufficient Quickness reduce it to a free action?

Within reason, sure.

That's up to the GM, but I'd be inclined to allow it, since it's certainly the sort of thing speedsters do. Plus characters are allowed to combine movement and manipulating objects all the time anyway, this is just a variation on that theme.
