Ability Question

Postby Zaki » Sun Jun 03, 2012 6:23 am

I am starting a M&M soon and I have a question about abilities.

On page 24 it says that Ability Scores are limited to a bonus of power level +5. But on page 26 the Costumed Adventurer takes 18's in Dex, Wis and Cha, being PL 10 his max would be 15. Did I misunderstand something or what?

The max is based on the bonus the ability gives, not the actual score.

So in a PL10 game, the maximum bonus an ability may give is +15.

Strength and Constituition are further restricted by Combat caps, since they provide Unarmed Damage and Toughness respectively.

Ahh Okay. Thank you

So a PL 10 can max have a total defense of 10(with or without armor) or what?

Combat caps limit Attack, Damage, Defense bonus and Toughness to PL.

There is an optional rule that most GMs allow that gives the option to Trade off Attack for Damage, or vice versa, and Defense bonus for Toughness, or vice versa.

This means in a PL10 game, you can have an Attack of +8 and Damage of +12, or an Attack of +12 and Damage of +8. You can do the same between Defense bonus and Toughness. The maximum allowable Trade Off is generally 1/2 of PL, though some GMs will restrict it more.

And just to clarify, Defense bonus is your total bonus for Defense, Defense is 10 + Defense bonus. So the Costumed Detective has a Defense bonus of +12 or a Defense of 22. If they list Defense with a + sign, then it is Defense bonus, if there is no + sign, then it is Defense. In that case, subtract 10 to get the actual Defense bonus.

Clarification: It's not just Damage, it's any Save Difficulty bonus.

Well, optional only in that the GM can decide not to allow your tradeoff, much like he can decide that your character can't have Evasion 2, Mind Control, or ranks in Protection. :) It's very much an official rule built into the system, including the archetypes.
