For example, a mental aura of nauseate costs 5/rank. That's ridiculous. Also, increasing the duration to sustained does weird things. Auras seem to have two durations: The duration of the effect and the duration of the aura. If both must be at least sustained, that means the above nauseate is sustained (lasting) instead of instant (lasting), in addition to the aura being sustained.
You can turn your aura on or off as a free action and it is sustained in duration (the effect itself has its normal duration, so a Stun Aura’s effect is still instant in duration and lasting). You can change your aura effect’s duration with Duration modifiers.

So yes, 5 pp/rank for a mental aura and maintaining the Aura is Sustained while the action is Instant (lasting). *shrug* It is what it is. Mental Aura means anyone who mentally touches you and anyone you mentally touch. If you can do mental grapples, most people have poor resistance to those, so you can keep applying your attack on them. And, unlike the Physical Aura, you don't have to worry about teammates getting zapped when they have to drag you out of the battlezone.
Duration modifiers apply to the aura and the power separately. You buy sustained once, and the aura is sustained, the nausea effect itself is still instant. If you want the nausea effect to be sustained as well, then the duration modifiers need to be applied twice.

Ultimate Power specifies that Mental Auras affect opponents that initiate a mental grapple with you, but do not affect opponents with whom you initiate a mental grapple.
