Batgirl III's Third Edition Character Thread
Index Last Updated: December 3, 2012 - ___ Builds

Welcome to my humble Think Tank Character Thread for the new edition. I hope to pick up where I left of from my Second Edition Thread, where I have many builds for the JLA, a general guide to Gotham City, a repository for stuff from my home-brew campaign, random builds, GMing tips, and whatever else I feel like posting. With time, many of my old favorites will be brought over as well as any new stuff as the mood strikes.

Sit back, pour yourself some coffee, and watch out for the bats.

Critiques and comments always welcome, and so are good old fashioned nitpicks.

Real Name: Maureen June Bromfield, D.E.Sc ., Psy.D., D.O.
Occupation: Adventurer (High School Science teacher)
Education: Doctor of Engineering - Gotham University (D.E.Sc.), Doctor of Psychology - Gotham University (Psy.D.) Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) University of New England
Base of Operations: Gotham City, NJ
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 190 lbs.
Eyes: Green
Hair: Blonde
Race: Human
Identity: Public
Legal Status: Citizen of the United States with no criminal record.

Background
Dr. Maureen Bromfield, better known to her friends and family by her middle name, June, has always been a fan of superheroes. As a kid growing up in Fawcett City, she idolized the local heroes - the Marvel Family. Her parents' bitter divorce when she was ten years old began to shake her childhood faith in heroism, and so did the long and messy custody battle that followed. Custody matters were finally settled the week of her eleventh birthday, with sole custody of June given to her engineer father, who promptly packed up June and her younger brothers (twins Tommy and Jake) and relocated the entire family to Gotham City. Needless to say, Gotham City did not suit June at all. The city was dark, gloomy, and grey; her father spent most of his time at work, and paid little attention to June or her younger brothers. June took it upon herself to replace their mother -- she did most of the cooking, helped the boys with their schoolwork, and kept them entertained for hours by spinning tall tales of the great adventures of the superheroes she so loved: Superman, Wonder Woman, and (of course) Captain Marvel.

Eventually her younger brothers grew up, and so did she. June pursued her interests in science -- possibly chasing after her father -- and her brothers pursued their own interests; enlisting in the Marine Corps -- possibly still chasing the tales of heroes their big sister had told them all their lives. Despite her standoffish relationship with her father, June inheireted his knack for electrical engineering and advanced technology. She did very well in school, and was accepted to many of the best colleges. She eventually earned her firest doctorate ar age 26, and was offered many promising jobs in R&D by Lex Corp, Wayne Tech, and other high tech firms. On her brothers' advice, she turned them all down, hoping to make the workld a better place as a humble high school science teacher.

Tommy and Jake were sent to Iraq, which caused the rift between June and her father to grow ever wider. During one argument with her father, shortly after the twins deployment, her father let slip that he hadn't been working for Wayne Tech at all during their time in gotham, but instead of one of the leading weapons engineers at a small and ultra-secretice branch of Lex Corps. Father and daught would speak again for over a year, not until Jake's funeral in 2007. Father and daughter reconciled on that day - he revealed that he was dying of an inoperable cancer and she told him about her great secret desire, to truly make a difference in the world.

Feeling that things had grown to dark during the year long disappearnce of Superman, Wonder Woman, and even the Batman, in the wake of yet another crisis, and vowing to make a difference in the lives of her students and her city, June returned to Gotham City and with the help of her father created one of the most powerful weapons the world has ever seen: a pair of rings which grant its wearer incredible powers almost rivaling that of the Marvel Family.

Doctor Marvel debuted shortly after the return of Superman, Wonder Woman, and the Batman; She operated throughout the American North East in addition to her native Gotham City. She rarely came into contact with the Batman or his close allies, but her activities were mostly limited to rescue, emergency response, and direct intervention in supervillain crimes -- Doctor Marvel very rarely "patrols" -- and a sort of mutal agreement to stay out of each others way developed between Marvel and the Batman.

Doctor Marvel has been operating as a hero for nearly five years, and has grown into an experienced and confident hero.

 Doctor Marvel was a character I originally built under M&M2e rules, both as an initial PL8 and then advanced to PL10. It's been a looong time since I got to play Mutants & Masterminds, but a new game might be starting soon so I have tried to update her for the new rules. I hope I've done okay and would appreciate any feedback you all can give. I used to pride myself on my mastery of the M&M2e rules, but having only played one game of 3e just after it launched -- and barely having a chance to really read the book or follow these forums -- I admit to being way behind the curve.

 The concept is still pretty simple: Ultra-Boy meets Captain Marvel by way of Green Lantern. Each of the two "Rings of Wonder" is an array with seven alternate powers -- each coorsponding to one of the magical traits that Captain Marvel gains from the wizard Shazam -- but Doctor Marvel can only use two powers at a time, one from each ring, and they cannot overlap.

Update (10-14-12): I've finished my M&M3e build of Doctor Marvel's primary nemesis Black Eve.

Edit 10/21/12: Working through the list of errors kindly supplied by Psistrike, I also took the time to tweak Doctor Marvel to better fill her PL10 caps. She needs to have the right combination of powers activated from her Rings, but she can hit her PL10 Caps in every area except for ranged offense, where she's a PL8. (Unless throwing something very, very heavy!)

Edit 10/25/12: Added my new "Worksheet" section to show my math on PL Caps.

Notable Relatives: Joyce Summers (mother, deceased), Hank Summers (estranged father), Dawn Summers (sister)
Race: Human

Background: If you don't know this one, you really should stop reaidn this message board and go watch some DVDs!

Buffy is the Chosen One, also called the Slayer, with powers to help her defeat vampires and other demonic forces. Her abilities including superhuman strength, speed, agility, reflexes, stamina, and accelerated healing (although this last bit is "off panel" as far as M&M3e rules are concerned). Buffy also seems to possesses an enhanced type of Slayer precognition that warns her of impending danger through her dreams. For example, her dreams warned her of both her death by the hands of the Master and of Angel's death; soon after, Angel lost his soul and reverted to Angelus, holding true to her vision. Later on in the series Buffy dreams of Faith, she talks to her and finds a way to defeat the Mayor through this vision, she also has similar visions of past Slayers.

In addition, Buffy exhibits a strong ability to lead others in a crisis situation. She has a very strong and perseverant spirit as well as a natural aptitude for leadership... despite all appearences to the contrary. Buffy often comes off as a dumb blonde, especially when it comes to name recollection, however she usually beats her more analytically intelligent comrades to an understanding of the problems at hand. These realizations cannot be entirely attributed to her Slayer senses, Buffy is naturally intuititve and courageous.

 Buffy is brutal in combat for a character of her power level and enviroment. She's rather focused on Vampires, but will still hold her own against most "minion" demons or other monsters, and will wipe the floor with "normal" human oppoenents. I figuure, since she usually rips through a Vampire or two beofre the openning credits even roll, she should have a much easier time with them than others where the fight tends to take a lot longer. The "monster of the week" type baddies she faces would probably be a short-but-challenging fight for heroes like Spider-Man or the Flash, Buffy needs to work on them a bit longer and usually has help from her freinds... and a nice pile of Hero Points.

 Buffy doesn't quite hit all of her PL caps out of the gate, there is a reason she keeps a trunk full of weapons and other tools in her closet...

Base of Operations: Unnamed Women's Prison, CA
Date of Birth: 1981
Notable Relatives: None Known
Race: Human
Status: Citizen of the United States with Felony Record

Background:
Faith is the third Slayer to appear on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, following Kendra Young. Faith became a Slayer when Kendra died at the hands of Drusilla in the penultimate episode of the second season. Most often described as "a rogue Slayer," she fulfilled the archetype of a nemesis in the classical sense, serving as the dark mirror to Buffy: similar tobut opposite of the hero. She represented "the road not taken," an anti-hero version of Buffy without her freinds and family to stop her from falling to the "darkside".

Faith is a Slayer, and thus has the usual powers of such, including healing factor and superhuman strength, speed, durability and reflexes. Although she never explicitly displayed the power of prophetic dreams that Buffy displayed on many occasions, Faith does appear to have some level of supernatural access to similar visions. In the third season finale "Graduation Day, Part Two," Buffy experiences a dream in which Faith appears to her, making a cryptic reference to the arrival of Dawn and Buffy's impending death in the finale of Season Five, "The Gift," as well as making several other cryptic references relevant to both Buffy and herself.

Later, in the episodes "This Year's Girl" and "Who Are You," we witness several portions of Faith's dreams in which she converses with the deceasedMayor Wilkins and overcomes a dream version of Buffy in order to awaken from her coma.

In the fourth season of Angel she also displayed this with the "mystical mind walk" in which she experienced trials throughout Angel's life while in a coma. She also experienced these dreams with Angelus who told of his "torture" during this he knocked her out and fought Angel. Angel then told Faith that her journey was not over. She then got up and as Angelus was about to hit her she woke up from her coma and stopped Connor from killing Angel.

Faith is built like Buffy, without those extra few years of expeirince. Her feat selection is also slightly different, as are her defense and toughness scores. Faith works solo far more often than Buffy, she needs to be able to take a hit rather than rely to much on avoiding ever punch. Power Attack, All-Out Attack, and the lack of teamwork related feats show her more agressive and self-centered combat style.

He left Buffy the Vampire Slayer at the end of the third season to move to Los Angeles in search of his redemption. Hilarity ensued.

 Despite the very different personalities, Angel and Angelus truly are the same person and thus are not differentiated in game mechanics... You could probably swap Favored Enemy [Demon] for Favored Enemy [Freinds and Loved One's of Angel] but that's splitting a pretty fine hair.

 Angel is not quite a match for Buffy most of the time; He's far stronger and tougher than just about any human and an very good fighter... But like all Buffyverse Vampires he gets slightly stronger and signifigantly tougher when he "gets all bumpy" and assumes the vampires' demonic visage. In this form he also gains his bite attack... It's slow to use, but it will kill most average bystanders in a single hit, Angel is very, very hesitant to use it. Angelus is not.

I'm just going to leave this down here...

Batgirl, you're back and you brought Buffy builds! YAY! :D
A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.

Nice Buffy builds! You put them at the same power levels as my builds, with similar ability scores, so that makes me feel better about mine. But it looks like Buffy's Parry/Toughness tradeoff would make her PL 9.

Oops, I meant to bump the Buffster up a point to a proper PL9. I see I see haven't lost my ability to make typos... Buffy, Faith, Angel, and Buffyverse Vampire minions were some of my favorite builds from my 2e thread.

I like the way they work under 3e pretty well, with healing rates having shifted to a more comic-book logic I don't need to worry about giving the Slayers regeneration (they heal fast for cinematic characters, but not so fast it every felt right as a Power). Although, I do miss a few of the old Feats, like Leadership and Master Plan for Buffy and Fearsome Presence for the vampiric "game face." Skills fill in the gaps, the same ends are reached by different means, but it still feels a bit... off.

Sorry, I need to ask these questions, just to get them out of my head.

Are you a chick who fell in from outer space?

Or, are you real? With a tender warm embrace?

BACKGROUND
This write-up represents run-of-the-mill Vampire minions of the Buffyverse. It matters little what they were before becomign undead -- high school student, career criminal, or homeless drifter -- these are "young" vampires, often only a few months undead, that form into small independent gangs or find work as thugs for more powerful demons and undead. Gamemasters should shuffle the criminal’s skill ranks around to specialize as needed, or indeed, just slap the vampire power set (and maybe some boosts to Strength and Stamina) onto any of the NPC archetypes from the back of the main rulebook.

 Buffy, Faith, or Angel should be able to plow through one of these guys in under a minute, indeed unpowered regular humans working together should be able to handle them -- as the Scooby Gang has proved time and again. Still, they've got more raw power than the typical thug and they do run in packs...

 I used these guys a couple of times in M&M2e against "traditional" superheroes... they actually did pretty well. Oh, sure, they're pretty much canon fodder at the best of times, but they're durable canon fodder and that makes them very useful. Since they don't need to breathe (Immunity to Fortitude Effects), the Red Skull got a lot of mileage about tossing nerve gas into the room while the vampires covered his escape... Nazi Vampires, you ask? Hell yeah, Nazi Vampires, says I!

<3 BtVS. Nice work with the PC Buffy and Faith. Same powers but you can still see the differences in how they approach slaying and life in general.

BACKGROUND
Despite being an active part of the superhero community for nearly seven years, almost nothing is known about the mysterious vigilante once known only as "The Atlantic City Shadow," the "Mafia Manhunter," and "The Man That Broke The Mob." Even amongst his few allies and associates, Anonymous keeps his past and identity are ambiguous, and to the general public almost nothing is known at all. Anonymous shuns the spotlight, avoids photographers, rarely appears in public, and has only given on interview to the press -- and that was in fact ghost-written by Joanne Listing (the reporter who is secretly his ally and teammate, Infinity).

 Anonymous, together with my other favorite original characters, Infinity and Doctor Marvel, form the "core" of the superhero team that I use as my "go to" group of NPCs. Anonymous is sort of the Batman to their Wonder Woman and Superman (in terms of powers and mission) or the Tony Stark to their Thor and Captain America (in terms of personality and outlook). It's kinda hard to write a detailed profile of a character that actively has no profile to detail!

 No, I don't support, condone, or know all that much about the "hacker" group. No, I don't spend anytime on 4Chan. Yes, I'm coopting their artwork, it's a cool image. Anonymous began as riff on a freind's character from a long ago M&M1e campaign; His character was a duplicator a la Jamie Maddrox, with Oracle level hacking abilities and some John Woo gun fu. I took the most basic levels of the concept and repurpossed them to something more to my tastes...

Height: 5'8"

Race: Human
Identity: Secret
Legal Status: Citizen of the United States with no criminal record.

BACKGROUND
A Strange Visitor from Another Millennium! The Woman of Tomorrow! More powerful than a battle tank, faster than a speeding jet, able to lift a battleship in a single hand. Look! Up beyond the sky! It's Infinity! In the years since her debut media has frenzy to figure out her true idenity has passed, but has instead grown into celebration of the beloved icon.

Joanne Listing had a reputation as a hot "up and coming" technology journalist, but became even more famous in early `08 as a passenger on Oceanic Airlines Flight 404 -- the crashing airliner famously rescued by Infinity during her public debut. The only reporter on the scene before Infinity flew off for parts unknown, it was Listing who landed the initial interveiw with the heroine... and has become something of Infinity's own Lois Lane.

The secret, of course, was that Joanne Listing is Infinity; a refugee from a distant future Earth that was over-run by hostile aliens. Jo Ayn Listing was an expert techo-archeologist whose husband, Galt Listing, was a researcher into temporal mechanics. The pair constructed a rudimentary time machine and escaped backwards into history... Jo Ayn arrived in 2007, alone and uncertain what had happened to her husband, until she received a letter from him -- sent in 1907 -- that explained the situtation. The time device had seperated them by over a hundred years, but he was working on a new device in his time period and would do his best to reach her...

While she awaited for her lost love, Jo Ayn settled into a new identity as the great-granddaughter of her time displaced husband, using the investments he had made a century earlier (and her own limited knowledge of the present day) to amass a comfortable forutne, land a job, and begin to live quietly in her new home. Knowing the dangers of the world -- and partially to releive boredom -- Joanne constructed weapons and armor of the sort commonplace in her native era. When she witnessed Flight 404 crashing into the heart of the city, she reacted without hesitation and used her abilities to save it... Such a public display made it impossible to hide, so she edited the airline's records to place herself as a passenger and then "interviewed" the new hero in an exclusive that launched her career.

In the years since, Infinity has become an icon beloved by many, but has made many enemies along the way... her beloved husband is still lost in the past.

 A little Superman, a little Iron Man, and just a dash of Back to the Future, and we've got ourselves a pretty cool heroine. For the most part, Infinity plays like your typical "Flying-Brick" Paragon, with just enough tricks and twists to keep things fresh. Outside of combat -- even outside of her armor -- Joanne can strut her suff as a genius inventor.

Real Name: Nicole Sherridan
Occupation: Crimefighter
Base of Operations: New York City (Manhattan), NY
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 135 lbs.
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blonde
Race: Human (Metahuman)
Identity: Secret
Legal Status: Citizen of the United States with no criminal record.

BACKGROUND
The Blue Jay is a (former) costumed cat-burglar and turnned crimefighter who was never very prominent before accepting the invitation of Anonymous to join the team.

Nicole Sherridan was raised by her single father, a Chicago diamond merchant, who always encouraged her to set her sights high. When playing basketball with him, she would ask him if she could be a cheerleader for the Chicago Bulls, and he responded that she should try becoming a basketball player. Later in college, her father gunned down by an armed robber named Devon James, and decided to train to learn how to fight in various fighting styles, lifting weights, rope climbing, etc., in order to kill him. Not caring if she got caught or prosecuted, she set out one night to kill James, but discovered that James has been killed in a drunk driving accident. Furious that she could not steal the life of the man who had stolen hers, and feeling reckless, Nicole decided to utilize her new skills as a cat burglar.

However, she soon grew bored with crime, she had no need for the money and her metahuman powers made it no challenge at all. One night, while preparing to break into a Manhattan art gallery, she came across a small gang of burglars attempting to steal "her" score. Nicole subdued the crooks, and had a great deal more fun doing the "right thing" than she would have committing the crime. From that night forward, she was a hero... more or less.

Nicole is a fun-loving, vivacious, thrill seeker who enjoys being the Blue Jay for the adventure it provides. She is quite sensual, a bit of a flirt, and enjoys companionship of many suitors. She is also a loyal and thoughtful friend, but this side of her personality is usually kept behind closed doors.
