Jack of Spades: Mystique, Avalanche, Growth, Juggernaut

Postby jspade » Thu Sep 23, 2010 10:13 pm

So I’ve decided to take a run at the Marvel Universe. I’ve been away from Marvel since Civil War, with the exception of Matt Fraction’s Iron Man, so I have no idea how things are going these days. Secret House of M vs. X Itself Disassembled? Got no clue. I haven’t read the X-Men regularly since before Wolverine had even one book of his own. So this will be the Marvel Universe as I remember it, which I’m finding is heavily influenced by the movies.

For all my builds, I’m trying for a more compressed PL scale than the official DC material. I don’t want any heroes above PL13 if I can avoid it, and only the truly heavy hitters (Superman, Thor, etc.) at that. This doesn’t apply to villains, of course; guys like the Anti-Monitor and Ultron have to be able to take on entire teams of high-end heroes and be a credible threat.

Heroes
Villains
Campaign Background

Thanks to everyone on the Think Tank, and especially Taliesin, Jabroniville, Thorpacolypse, and BARON, whose builds have helped me learn the system.

Totals: Abilities -60 + Powers 157 + Advantages 1 + Skills 0 + Defenses 0 = 98 points

 This is a basic power ring used by a generic (roughly PL10) Star Sapphire. Veterans will have dynamic alternate abilities, more alternate abilities, more powerful arrays, and/or more powerful force fields.

 Like several others on the ATT, I addressed parts of the ring as a minion. The minion is capable of using the ring's other powers (the ring as device), but usually does so only if the ringbearer is incapacitated or dead. The ring handles communication, translation, and sensor functions. The prediction reflects the ring's ability to detect true love in danger, and to show someone who their true love will be. The ring's telepathy covers universal translation (Comprehend Languages), the ability to speak to things whose language you are physically unable to form (Area 1), the ring's telepathic link to its wearer (Mind Reading), linkage to a central communication hub (Communication Link), and the ability to detect the violet light in others (Detect Emotion). The ring-minion is commonly instructed to keep the ring with the Sapphire in case the Sapphire is incapacitated, but details vary. It also provides access to a storage dimension for the Sapphire's power battery.

I would not do this in a campaign with a mixture of Lanterns and non-Lanterns; it gets too complicated. But all the PCs in my campaign are Star Sapphires, so the extra detail on their powers is worth it.

 Crystallization is the Star Sapphires' signature attack. The Transformed result gives the target Immunity (Life Support) as long as they remain in the crystal, and may (GM's discretion) permanently change the target's motivations. The Cover limitation means that the crystal provides partial cover with one degree of failure, total cover with two, and completely protects the target with three degrees of failure. I'm still not entirely happy with this construction and would welcome feedback on it.

 Running out of power and needing to recharge I handle as a complication.

 Some other alternate abilities some Sapphires might develop or power stunt:
  • Agents: Summon 3, Active, Broad Type (Energy Constructs), Concentration, Horde, Multiple Minions 2 • (9 points/rank)
  • Area Force Blast: Damage 13, Area (Choose when taken), Variable Descriptor (physical) • (3 points/rank)
  • Constructs: Create 13, Precise, Stationary • (1 point + 2 points/rank)
  • Force Beam: Ranged Damage 8, Accuracy +4, Multi-Attack, Variable Descriptor • (3 points + 3 points/rank)
  • Heart Link: Healing 27, Distracting, Limited: Others, Limited: Requires love present (Resurrection requires True Love), Restorative, Resurrection • (1 point/rank)
  • Illumination: Environment 14 (Bright light), Quirk: Monochrome • (-1 point + 2 points/rank)
  • Melee Aura: Impervious Protection 6, Sustained, Close Only; Damage 15 • (7 points/2 Protection & 5 Damage)
  • Movable Constructs: Create 9, Movable • (3 points/rank)
  • Restraints: Ranged, Cumulative Affliction 9 (Hindered & Vulnerable, Defenseless & Immobilized, Paralyzed), Extra Condition (Limited Degree), Opaque (Limited Degree), Resisted by Athletics or Dodge, Escape with Escape Artist or Damage • (3 points/rank)
  • Shields: Enhanced Defenses (Dodge 5, Parry 5), Noticeable • (-1 point + 2 points/rank)
  • Transport: Create 8, Movable, Feature: Provides Immunity 3 (Radiation, Suffocation, Vacuum) to those inside • (3 points + 3 points/rank)

Love conquers all – with violet light!

Flight: Flight 14, Movement 3 (Space Travel 2, Environmental Adaptation: Zero Gravity) • 34 points

    • Teleport: Movement 1 (Space Travel +1), Limited to known coordinates; Teleport 12, Change Direction, Change Velocity, Limited to Extended • 1 point

Assessment, Equipment (Power Battery), Minion 7 (Ring AI)

Skills

Defenses
Dodge 10, Parry 4, Will 9, Fortitude 5, Toughness 10 (2 without ring)

Power Points
Attributes 28 + Powers 75 + Advantages 2 + Skills 9 + Defenses 20 = Total 134 points

15 points are left unspent; these can be used for specialist skills or advantages, or for a racial package.

Notes
This is a typical Star Sapphire. A rookie would be PL9 (and would fit on this budget, though combat capability would need to be trimmed to fit under PL). I use this as a template for building most supporting Star Sapphires.

I personally have my doubts about the force field being sustained. She goes unconscious, she dies. I think that may have been the way it has been portrayed in the comics from time to time, but I remember the lanterns just sort of drifting in space if they were unconscious. I may be misremembering or it might of changed who knows.

Just a question which may be covered by a rule in the book in overlooked.

Why does the minion have dashes in most of its stats? Were those supposed to be zero's? and if not what do they represent?

EDIT: never mind. I apparently some how totally skipped over the section on constructs when going through the book. Biggest face palm ever. Sigh.

On a related note, according to the book losing three traits and immunity fortitude cancel each other out (page 164 second paragraph). So you have over priced your minion. I think...

I lost six traits (−60) and paid for the Immunity (Fortitude effects) as part of the Artificial Intelligence.

The force field is sustained, but the aura (which has the life support immunities) is not. So an unconscious Sapphire will not die in space, but one who isn't going around glowing all the time is more vulnerable to being ambushed.

Star Sapphire (Carol Ferris) • PL 13
I've never been a good girl.
Abilities
STR 0, STA 2, AGL 3, DEX 3, FGT 2, INT 3, AWE 3, PRE 3

Powers
Power Ring: 102 points; Feature: Can only be used by those with the capacity for great love, the Zamarons, or the ring's own AI (+1); Removable (−20) • 83 points
Aura: Immunity 7 (Environmental heat, cold, radiation; pressure extremes; suffocation) • 7 points
Flight: Flight 14, Movement 3 (Space Travel 2, Environmental Adaptation: Zero Gravity) • 34 points
Force Field: Protection 9, Sustained • 9 points
    Illumination: Environment (Light) 2 • 2 points
Uniform: Feature 1 (Quick Change) • 1 point
Light of Love: Array (37 points) • 49 points
    • Crystals: Create 18, Distracting, Impervious, Innate, Permanent, Precise, Dynamic • 38 points
    • Crystalization: Ranged Cumulative Affliction 18 (Dazed & Vulnerable; Stunned & Defenseless; Incapacitated & Transformed; Resisted by Will); Cover; Extra Condition; Limited: Can be freed by others using damage; Quirks: No effect on those primarily motivated by love or those with no capacity for love; Reversible; Dynamic • 2 points
    • Force Constructs: Create 12, Movable, Precise, Dynamic • 2 points
    • Force Blast: Ranged Damage 18, Variable Descriptor (physical) • 2 poinst
    • Manipulators: Move Object 13, Precise, Dynamic • 2 points
    • Teleport: Movement 1 (Space Travel +1), Limited to known coordinates; Teleport 17, Change Direction, Change Velocity, Limited to Extended • 1 point
Advantages
Benefit 6 (Queen of Zamaron, Security Clearance, Wealth 4), Equipment 1 (Power Battery), Leadership, Minion 7 (Ring AI), Taunt

Skills
Deception 9 (+12), Close Combat: Ring 5 (+7), Expertise: Business 12 (+15), Insight 6 (+9), Intimidation 2 (+5), Perception 6 (+9), Persuasion 5 (+8), Vehicles 10 (+13), Ranged Combat: Power Ring 5 (+8)

Defenses
Dodge 13, Parry 12, Will 12, Fortitude 6, Toughness 11 (2 without ring)

Power Points
Attributes 38 + Powers 83 + Advantages 16 + Skills 30 + Defenses 33 = Total 200 points

Complications
Influenced: The light of love has a strong grip on it's champions. It will sometimes try to take control of them, giving them the dazed, compelled, or even controlled conditions.
Power Loss: The ring must be recharged roughly every 24 hours, or more frequently if used extensively or at high levels.
Relationship: Carol's on-again off-again relationship with Hal Jordan has defined her interaction with the superheroic community. She is invested in being a good mother to her son.
Responsibility: Carol is the CEO of Ferris Aircraft as well as Queen of Zamaron.

Notes
Carol is the most powerful of the Star Sapphires, and the most experienced at wielding the power, though Miri understands it better. Respected by the other Sapphires despite being from Earth, Carol was named Queen again when Aga'po and the other Zamarons withdrew to focus entirely on repairing the central power battery. In our continuity, the baby Carol traded to Neron for freedom from the Star Sapphire was the host for the Predator; raised in Hell until the Spectre (Hal) freed him, he is now part of the team.

Carol's combat style is more about the interpersonal than the physical; she's no match for Sinestro in trading blows, but she can infuriate anyone into carelessness.

Power Loss: Etrigan can be forced to change to Jason Blood or Blood to Etrigan by reciting the summoning incantation.

Notes
Neron has used Etrigan against the Star Sapphires, but Merlin's binding limits his utility on other worlds. Still, one of the PCs has made an error of bravado, and will learn that you do not taunt Etrigan with impunity.

Interesting stuff here, jspade. Sounds like a fun game. Also sounds like Etrigan is going to be dropping rhymes on one of your PC's head.

Thanks Thorp. High praise coming from you.

Etrigan wrote:Yes, Etrigan, a mighty prince, laid low by Neron's fall
Now high again, and here and charged to mutilate you all.

But not alone, for many demons serve at Neron's throne
Behold my army, fiends of steel, of hellfire and bone.

The pit-spawn too have come to feast upon your pious hearts
Their leashes strain, and when they slip, ah, then the carnage starts.

Etrigan is well prepared to spill your blood upon the stone
But I will spare you this nightmare: You will not die alone!

Let's have no more of speeches; inaction I abhor!
Now have at thee! Now "Havoc!" cry! Now let us go to war!

Red Lantern (Typical) • PL 10
Abilities
STR 2, STA 2, AGL 1, DEX 1, FGT 4, INT 0, AWE 2, PRE -2

Powers
Power Ring: 91 points; Feature: Can only be used by those with great rage in their hearts, or the ring's own AI (+1); Removable (-17) • 73 points
Aura: Immunity 7 (Environmental heat, cold, radiation; pressure extremes; suffocation) • 7 points
Berzerk: Enhanced Traits (STR +5, INT −2, AWE −2, PRE −2, Fort +5); Immunity 10 (Mental Effects), Half effect • 8 points

Uniform: Feature 1 (Quick Change) • 1 point
Advantages
All-Out Attack, Minion 6 (Ring AI), Equipment 1 (Red Power Battery)

Skills
Close Combat: Unarmed 3 (+7), Intimidation 9 (+8), Ranged Combat: Power Ring 4 (+5)

Defenses
Dodge 10, Parry 10, Will 7, Fortitude 8[13], Toughness 10

Power Points
Attributes 20 + Powers 73 + Advantages 8 + Skills 8 + Defenses 26 = Total 135 points

15 points are free for use on racial packages or individual stunts.

Complications
Motivation: Revenge!
Weakness: The red ring replaces the ringbearer's heart and blood; removing it is fatal.
Temper: Everything sets a Red Lantern off.

Notes
This is a typical Red Lantern, new to his ring. Most new Red Lanterns haven't figured out how to turn their Berzerk power off, which makes them the drooling band of lunatics they are. Once they do, they start learning how to form constructs and become much more dangerous foes.

Notes: Though we haven't seen it yet in the comics, I'm assuming that the Red Lantern rings are like the others in that they have an artificial intelligence. They do at least seem to be able to seek out a new ringbearer.
