Dad thinks I'm too short. My Sensei thinks I'm too "girly". But just like the principles of Jujitsu--I use their expectations against them. That will be their weakness. Not mine. Let them all underestimate me. Let them think they have the upper hand on the little girl. Let them relax while teh adrenaline leaks out of their systems. Let them believe they're closing their grips on a shrinking violet. And when their guard is down and their pride is rising...let me kick their butts up around their ears. - Batgirl

Comments: No one will believe me, but I was really thinking of bringing Babs back as Batgirl in the Thorpacoverse before the New 52 was announced. But alas and alack, they scooped me, so I have to continue to look like the hack that I am…

The new book has been pretty good, but then again, I am a TOTAL Gail Simone mark, so I'm probably a little biased. I met her at a con a couple of years ago and she didn't seem like she was in that great of a mood at first, but when I got to her table to have her sign my Birds of Prey #1, she couldn't have been nicer. Of course, I gushed all over her like a schoolgirl with a crush, so she probably found this 6-2, 300 lb, black dude acting like that very humorous. :(

Clean Up 3/14/13: Babs gets a much needed update.

Our last item in our GOTHAM LADIES' NIGHT hits the Aisle 1 shelves and it's a new build!

Image
He's only one man. He isn't in every patrol car, or walking every beat. It helps for other cops to see someone like me working next to them. Being a woman makes it harder. I end up with a lot to prove. - Renee Montoya

RENEE MONTOYA
PL: 6 (101 pts) - OPL: 6 ; DPL: 6

ABILITIES: STRENGTH 2, STAMINA 2, AGILITY 3, DEXTERITY 3, FIGHTING 8, INTELLECT 2, AWARENESS 2, PRESENCE 2

SKILLS: Acrobatics 3 (+6), Athletics 4 (+6), Close Combat [Unarmed] 1 (+9), Deception 3 (+5), Expertise [Cop] 5 (+7), Expertise [Streetwise] 5 (+7), Insight 3 (+5), Intimidation 5 (+7), Investigation 7 (+9), Perception 4 (+6), Persuasion 2 (+4), Ranged Combat [Guns] 5 (+8), Sleight of Hand 2 (+5), Stealth 4 (+7), Vehicles 3 (+6)

ADVANTAGES: Benefit (1) (GCPD Clearance), Defensive Roll (1), Equipment (4), Improved Disarm, Improved Hold, Improved Trip, Languages (1) (Spanish, 1 other, Base: English), Move-by Action, Takedown (1)

POWERS:
NONE

EQUIPMENT:
(20ep)
Cell Phone, Standard: Feature 1 (Cellular Communication), Diminutive; 1ep
Flashlight: Feature 1 (Illumination), Tiny; 1ep
Handcuffs: Feature 1 (Toughness 9, DC20 Sleight of Hand/Technology), Tiny; 1ep
Heavy Pistol: Ballistic Ranged Damage 4; 100 ft range, Small; 8ep
Tonfa, Small: Bludgeoning Strength-Based Damage 1, Medium; 1ep
Vehicle: (5ep)
Mid-Size Car: Size - L, Strength - 5, Speed - 5, Def - 8, Tough - 8; 10ep (1/2 paid by her partner, Crispus Allen)

OFFENSE:
Initiative +3
Close Attack +8 [Tonfa +3]
Unarmed +9 [Unarmed +2]
Ranged Attack +3
Guns +8 [Heavy Pistol +4]

DEFENSES:
Dodge +8 [DC18] Parry +8 [DC18]
Toughness +3, Fortitude +5, Will +7

COMPLICATIONS:
Addiction: Renee is a recovering alcoholic
Relationships: Renee still has strong feelings for her ex-girlfriend Kate Kane (Batwoman). She is close to her partner, Crispus Allen and seems to be getting to know The Question
Responsibility: To protect and serve Gotham City
Temper: She is working through them but she has some anger issues

Abilities 48 + Skills 28 (56 ranks) + Advantages 12 + Powers 0 + Defenses 13 = 101 / 101

Comments: Renee Montoya was a decent character in Batman TAS and became a pretty compelling one in the GCPD series. She springboarded off of that to become the new Question in the DCU, but I think they made a mistake with the runaway success of The Question in JLU. I hope they rectify that in the New 52, but I haven’t seen anything on that yet.

Anyway, I built Montoya in pre-Question mode for my Gotham where she is still partners with Crispus Allen and is one of the best cops on the force.

Ranged Attack +3
Pistol +5 [Light Pistol +3]

DEFENSES:
Dodge +6 [DC16] Parry +6 [DC16]

COMPLICATIONS:
Relationships: His family
Responsibility: To protect and serve Gotham City

Abilities 36 + Skills 17 (34 ranks) + Advantages 6 + Powers 0 + Defenses 12 = 71 / 71

Comments: Crispus Allen is not the host of The Spectre in the Thorpacoverse. He’s still a detective on the GCPD, one of the more streetwise of the crew, with tons of contacts and known as a bit of a roughneck. He and Montoya are like brother and sister, though, and are some of Gordon’s favorites.

I always liked Jim Corrigan as the host of the Spectre, but I think I am going to have to come up with someone else to bear the mantle. Maybe Pym….

We're still emptying the last truck from our Gotham location, and we've gotten to a J-Mart Favorite!

My view is, when it comes to Gotham, you don't know it, brother. It knows you. And the moment you think otherwise, the moment you get too comfortable... that's when it stabs you in the back. Because above everything, Gotham is a mystery. - Harvey Bullock

HARVEY BULLOCK
PL: 5 (75 pts) - OPL: 5 ; DPL: 5

ABILITIES: STRENGTH 2, STAMINA 2, AGILITY 0, DEXTERITY 2, FIGHTING 5, INTELLECT 1, AWARENESS 2, PRESENCE 0

SKILLS: Athletics (+2), Deception 6 (+6), Expertise [Cop] 5 (+6), Expertise [Streetwise] 8 (+9), Insight 3 (+5), Intimidation 10 (+10) [Startle], Investigation 6 (+7), Perception (+2), Ranged Combat [Guns] 3 (+5), Stealth 5 (+5), Vehicles 4 (+6)

ADVANTAGES: Benefit (1) (GCPD Clearance), Contacts, Equipment (5), Startle, Tough* (2)

POWERS:
NONE

EQUIPMENT:
(25ep)
Cell Phone, Standard: Feature 1 (Cellular Communication), Diminutive; 1ep
Flashlight: Feature 1 (Illumination), Tiny; 1ep
Handcuffs: Feature 1 (Toughness 9, DC20 Sleight of Hand/Technology), Tiny; 1ep
Heavy Pistol: Ballistic Ranged Damage 4; 100 ft range, Small; 8ep
Tonfa, Small: Bludgeoning Strength-Based Damage 1, Medium; 1ep
Vehicle: (10ep)
Mid-Size Car: Size - L, Strength - 5, Speed - 5, Def - 8, Tough - 8; 10ep

OFFENSE:
Initiative +0
Close Attack +5 [Unarmed +2; Tonfa +3]
Ranged Attack +2
Guns +5 [Heavy Pistol +4]

DEFENSES:
Dodge +5 [DC15] Parry +6 [DC16]
Toughness +4, Fortitude +5, Will +5

COMPLICATIONS:
Pain In The Ass: Harvey can be quite abrasive at times
Reputation: Lots of people think Harvey is a dirty cop on the take as well as having a rep for police brutality
Responsibility: To protect and serve Gotham City
Rivalry: The Bat Family

Abilities 28 + Skills 25 (50 ranks) + Advantages 10 + Powers 0 + Defenses 12 = 75 / 75

Comments: He’s probably coming in DC Universe (along with a lot of the builds I've done, but you know I gotta build DC stuff regardless because I have a sickness), but I had to build Harvey Bullock, he’s just too great. The epitome of the old, grumpy, rumpled cop, he’s been a mainstay of the Batman mythos forever, it seems.

In the Thorpacoverse, he doesn't much like the Bat family, but he's got a grudging respect them. The other "freaks" however...he won't hesitate to put a slug in their eyes, even if it means his badge.

Nice to see the GCPD get some love... cancelling their comic was a crime, I tell you. I'm sure that the other five people that read it, besides me, would all agree!

Any chance of seeing the original toughest cop in Gotham City: Shotgun Smith?

Has anyone ever told you that you have great taste in comic books. I actually missed Gotham Central when it was coming out, as i was just getting back into comics in 03 when it first started coming out & i wasn't into the whole Bat Mythos thing. But having read it recently, its been added to my trade pull list, for eventual purchase... Unfortunately it is book number 113 through 116 on the DC side, so it may take me a while to purchase them.

The dude pulled a double-barreled sawnoff on the Batman. Regularly. He actually got kinder and gentler when he was booted of the GCPD and moved into the Gotham County Sheriff's office, but he still openned he comback appearences in the 90's by ramming the Redbird off the road with his car. Dude essentially took out the Batmobile with a four-door sedan.

Just like Bullock, I gotta respect anyone willing to follow the Dirty Harry school of police work in Gotham and be a good guy.

We've got another import from our Gotham location for Aisle 1.

Image
Dear God. Is this what I have become? More animal than man. When will the surrender be complete? - Robert Kirk Langstrom

MAN-BAT
PL: 10 (100 pts) - OPL: 10 ; DPL: 10

ABILITIES: STRENGTH 6, STAMINA 7, AGILITY 3, DEXTERITY 1, FIGHTING 6, INTELLECT -2, AWARENESS 2, PRESENCE -2

SKILLS: Acrobatics 7 (+10), Athletics 5 (+11), Close Combat [Unarmed] 6 (+12), Deception (-2), Insight 3 (+5), Intimidation (-2), Perception 9 (+11), Persuasion (-2), Stealth 4 (+7)

ADVANTAGES: All-Out Attack, Animal Empathy, Chokehold, Favored Environment (Flying), Improved Initiative (1), Power Attack, Takedown (1), Tough* (2), Tracking

POWERS:
Bat Wings: Flight 4 (30 mph; Flaw: Winged); 4 pts
Claws: Piercing/Slashing Strength-based Damage 2 (Extra: Split); 3 pts
Bat Senses: Senses 8 (Darkvision, Normal Hearing [Extended, Accurate, Analytical], Ultrahearing, Scent [Extended]); 8 pts
Aerial Master: Enhanced Dodge 4 (Flaw: Limited [when flying]), Enhanced Parry 2 (Flaw: Limited [when flying]), Enhanced Skills 2 (Acrobatics 4 ranks, Flaw: Limited [when flying]); 4 pts

EQUIPMENT:
NONE

OFFENSE:
Initiative +7
Close Attack +6
Unarmed +12 [Unarmed +6; Claws +8]
Ranged Attack +1

DEFENSES:
Dodge +7 (+11 when Flying) [DC17/21] Parry +9 (+11 when Flying) [DC19/21]
Toughness +9, Fortitude +10, Will +6

COMPLICATIONS:
Disability: At times, Langstrom's personality is more dominant and he can speak and be reasoned with. At other times, especially when he has been in his Man-Bat form for a long period, he becomes animalistic, losing his ability to speak and most of his humanity. He also very near sighted in daylight
Involuntary Transformation: Man-Bat can be turned back in Kirk Langstrom if his serum wears off or if he is injected with the proper antidote
Relationships: No matter what state he is in, he deeply loves his wife Francine and will protect her at any cost
Secret Identity: Most people do not know Man-Bat is Dr. Kirk Langstrom
Vulnerable: He is vulnerable to visual dazzle effects and hypersonics

Abilities 42 + Skills 15 (30 ranks) + Advantages 10 + Powers 19 + Defenses 14 = 100 / 100

Comments: I really liked Man-Bat as a kid. He was the first villain I ever saw Batman fight in the 70's with that rockin’ Neal Adams art. I liked the DCA build OK, but they had Kirk with his full faculties in his Man-Bat form. I prefer the more feral Man-Bat.

In the Thorpacoverse, he is pretty much as he is in canon. Langstrom tries to avoid taking the serum, but his urges often overtake him and the Man-Bat flies again. Although, he is getting better about remaining in control and is sometimes an ally of the Bat family.

We've got a GREEN LIGHT SPECIAL as we continue to unload our latest shipment from our Gotham store!

Image
You don't understand...I really didn't want to leave you any clues. I really planned never to go back to Arkham Asylum. But I left you a clue anyway. So I...I have to go back there. Because I might need help. I...I might actually be crazy. - The Riddler

THE RIDDLER
PL: 9 (146 pts) - OPL: 9 ; DPL: 9

ABILITIES: STRENGTH 1, STAMINA 1, AGILITY 2, DEXTERITY 3, FIGHTING 5, INTELLECT 8, AWARENESS 4, PRESENCE 3

SKILLS: Athletics 3 (+4), Close Combat [? Cane] 6 (+11), Deception 10 (+13) [Taunt], Expertise [Puzzles and Riddles] 11 (+19) [Skill Mastery, Skill Supremacy], Expertise [Streetwise] 3 (+11), Insight 9 (+13), Intimidation 2 (+5), Investigation 10 (+18), Perception 8 (+12), Persuasion 6 (+9), Sleight of Hand 2 (+5), Stealth 6 (+8), Technology 4 (+12Vehicles 4 (+7)

ADVANTAGES: Conspiracy Theorist* (1), Defensive Roll (3), Equipment (7), Improved Critical (1) (? Cane), Luck (Inspiration) (1), Ranged Attack (4), Set-Up (1), Skill Mastery (2) (Expertise [Puzzle and Riddles], Investigation), Skill Supremacy (1) (Expertise [Puzzle and Riddles), Taunt

POWERS:
NONE

EQUIPMENT:
(35ep)
18ep for vehicles, HQ, etc.
Arsenal: (17ep)
? Flash Bomb: Burst Area Affliction 5 (Resisted by Dodge, Overcome by Fortitude; 1st: Visually Impaired, 2nd: Visually Disabled, 3rd: Visual Unaware; Extra: Ranged Area Burst, Flaw: Limited to one sense) Range 25ft; 15ep
? Cane: Bludgeoning Strength-Based Damage 2 (Extra: Improved Disarm, Weapon Bind), Large; 1ep

OFFENSE:
Initiative +2
Close Attack +5 [Unarmed +1]
? Cane +11 [Cane +3]

Special Attack [? Flash Bomb +5, Area Burst]

DEFENSES:
Dodge +12 [DC22] Parry +12 [DC22]
Toughness +4, Fortitude +7, Will +9

COMPLICATIONS:
Intellectual Superiority: The Riddler commits crimes in order to show off his intelligence. His crimes are often non-violent, relying on wit to solve as opposed to brute force.
Motivation: Money and power
Obsession: He is obsessed with riddles, puzzles, games, puns and is compelled to leave clues to his crimes whether he wants to or not
Rivalry: Batman

Abilities 54 + Skills 42 (84 ranks) + Advantages 22 + Powers 0 + Defenses 28 = 146 / 146

Comments: I always liked The Riddler, especially Frank Gorshin’s Riddler in the old campy 60’s Batman series. A couple of writers have tried to take him a darker direction, but I never liked that. He’s meant to be a mental threat to Batman, and to be a lighter villain. Gotham has enough darker ones. I loved Alex Ross’ take on him in Justice where he rolls with the big boys, but really seems out of place among Grodd, Luthor, Manta and others.

My Riddler is quite a bit less capable in combat than the DCA one, well, actually a LOT less capable, but he’s pretty good on defense because he’s used to trying to get away from combat instead of fighting.

Query and Echo are coming eventually.

As promised, here are Query and Echo:

Image

QUERY AND ECHO
PL: 7 (98 pts) - OPL: 7 ; DPL: 7

ABILITIES: STRENGTH 2, STAMINA 2, AGILITY 3, DEXTERITY 3, FIGHTING 6, INTELLECT 1, AWARENESS 1, PRESENCE 1

SKILLS: Acrobatics 7 (+10) [Agile Feint], Athletics 3 (+5), Close Combat [Unarmed] 4 (+10), Deception 6 (+7/+9) [Attractive], Expertise [Criminal] 5 (+6), Insight (+1), Intimidation (+1), Perception 4 (+5), Persuasion 4 (+5/+7) [Attractive] , Ranged Combat [Firearms] 6 (+9), Sleight of Hand 3 (+6), Stealth 4 (+7), Vehicles 4 (+7)

ADVANTAGES: Agile Feint, Attractive (1), Defensive Roll (2), Equipment (5), Improved Initiative (1), Move-by Action, Quick Draw, Redirect, Set-Up (1), Takedown (1), Teamwork

POWERS:
NONE

EQUIPMENT:
(25ep)
Assault Rifle: Ballistic Ranged Damage 5, Extra: Multi-Attack; 15ep
Motorcycle: Size - M, Strength - 1, Speed - 6, Def - 10, Tough - 8; 10ep

OFFENSE:
Initiative +7
Close Attack +6
Unarmed +10 [Unarmed +2]
Ranged Attack +3
Firearms +9 [Assault Rifle +5, Multiattack]

DEFENSES:
Dodge +10 [DC20] Parry +10 [DC20]
Toughness +4, Fortitude +6, Will +5

COMPLICATIONS:
Responsibility: To The Riddler

Abilities 38 + Skills 25 (50 ranks) + Advantages 16 + Powers 0 + Defenses 19 = 98 / 98

Comments: Riddler’s muscle and eye candy, Query and Echo.

Comments: I hadn’t really heard of much of Scott Snyder’s stuff until he took over Batman a couple of years ago, but OMG, has he turned into one of DC’s stars. His current run on Batman will probably go down as one of the best ever. And his recent (and kind of continuing) arc with the Court of Owls has been his usual great stuff. You can Wiki (or do yourself a favor and pick up the books) for the info, but to sum up, the Court of Owls have been controlling Gotham from behind the scenes for over a hundred years and up until now they’ve somehow stayed off Batman’s radar. But that is no longer the case since they decided Bruce Wayne had to die and they sent their master assassin, the Talon (William Cobb), to kill him. Obviously, that wasn’t going to work because he's the frickin' Batman (recon-ize 8) ), and so it’s full scale war with the Court unleashing 40 of their Talon assassins on the city and the Bat family between them and the murders of several prominent Gotham citizens, including Bruce, Lucius Fox, Jim Gordon and interestingly enough, Mr. Freeze. It’s all chronicled in the Night of the Owls crossover event that I cannot recommend enough.

Since I have been loving the arc, I had to whip up the Talons for my setting. These would be your standard Talon assassins. At PL8, with Wolverine regeneration and expert melee and thrown blade skills, these guys are street level nightmares, especially since I wouldn’t consider using the minion rule with them unless there are a ton of them attacking one person. And that has only happened once, with the group that stormed Wayne Manor. But it's almost unfair letting Batman take advantage of the minion rule.

Basically, all the Talons can regenerate from wounds almost instantly and if they are not frozen, they can come back from death pretty quickly, too. I probably undersold their Immortality, but I figure once a day is good enough for now. They are masters in close combat and with throwing blades, so you combine that with their regeneration and they are really tough outs for the Bat family.

I'm making updates to the "name" Talons I built before and I'll be adding some others now that I read all the Night of the Owls tie-ins. I'm probably even going to build the new heroic Talon from the new self-titled book that I picked up last week.

Nice Talons. They would be very tough for street level characters. But definitely fun to use. I really like your Riddler too.

Nice to see more "Gotham Central" love. It's funny- it was a great book, but had such limited appeal for comic book fans, so of course it ended up with a "Doom Patrol Fandom" of vocal smart people with good taste :). It'd actually do MUCH better on live action TV, but the whole superhero thing would make it weird for people- I'd gladly watch a TV series about it. Oddly, I found myself enjoying the more "secondary" crew just as much as the Montoya/Allen crew, particularly Driver & Chandler. My favourite moment was when I predicted Harvey Bullock's reaction to Montoya's being outed almost to the exact literal dialogue he used, and when I had the "eureka!" moment at the same time as the detective in the Firebug/Hobo camp/Babysitter case.
