Dad thinks I'm too short. My Sensei thinks I'm too "girly". But just like the principles of Jujitsu--I use their expectations against them. That will be their weakness. Not mine. Let them all underestimate me. Let them think they have the upper hand on the little girl. Let them relax while teh adrenaline leaks out of their systems. Let them believe they're closing their grips on a shrinking violet. And when their guard is down and their pride is rising...let me kick their butts up around their ears. - Batgirl

Build Comments: No one will believe me, but I was really thinking of bringing Babs back as Batgirl in the Thorpacoverse before the New 52 was announced. But alas and alack, they scooped me, so I have to continue to look like the hack that I am…

The new book has been pretty good, but then again, I am a TOTAL Gail Simone mark, so I'm probably a little biased. I met her at a con a couple of years ago and she didn't seem like she was in that great of a mood at first, but when I got to her table to have her sign my Birds of Prey #1, she couldn't have been nicer. Of course, I gushed all over her like a schoolgirl with a crush, so she probably found this 6-2, 300 lb, black dude acting like that very humorous. :(

Secret Origins: Barbara Gordon is the daughter of longtime Gotham Police Commissioner James Gordon. Barbara, alongside with her brother, James Jr., was visiting her father in the Police Station of Gotham City, under the excuse of needing it as part of a college project. Her real motivation, though, was taking a closer look on what the officers thought and knew about Batman, the mysterious vigilante who was similar to her in many aspects, including her smartness.

She is escorted by Officer Dwight Morgan, who the young lady intriguing. In the middle of the visit, though, a criminal who had just been arrested, Harry X, managed to start a riot in the Station with the help of his allies. He threatened James Jr.'s life, saying he would only need one of the commissioner’s kids as a hostage. He picked Barbara over the boy he called an aberration, forcing her to run with her brother while Morgan fought the assassin.

The bandit, however, defeated the officer and would certainly kill him if Barbara didn’t stop him. She dressed up with the Batman's fantasy gear that the cops were using to try to get how the vigilante worked. She used her martial arts skills to defeat Harry and is praised by Batman, who had recently come to assist, for the good work.

After that, she started to work alongside with him and Robin. At first, Batman did not want another partner, but he ended up accepting her.

The Story so Far: She would still be Batgirl for some time, however she started to feel inadequate in a world that had heroes like Superman, Captain America, and Wonder Woman. She retired from her career as Batgirl, however that did not stop violence from entering her life. In an attempt to drive Jim Gordon insane, the Joker arrived at the Gordon's house and shot Barbara Gordon through the spine. He then took pictures of her in various states of undress and torture that he would show Gordon later in an attempt to drive him insane. The shots from the Joker's gun severed Barbara's spine leaving her in a wheelchair, most likely for the rest of her life. Upon hearing this both Barbara and Dick Grayson, the former original Robin, were devastated. This would lead to an obsessive disorder regarding the Joker, tapping into video of him, as well as telling Nightwing that they should make an exception to their one rule and kill the Clown Prince of Crime. She would later ask Batman for the camera that was used to shoot the pictures of her. She has it in a secret building, along with her original Batgirl suit.

Initially Barbara fell into a bout of depression, but soon used her knowledge of computers in the ever growing modern era and use it to fight crime the best way she can. Using her incredible smarts and photographic memory along with her ability to use computers in a way that most of the superhero community are unable to, she creates a new persona. She went by the codename Oracle and she served as an information broker, first to the Suicide Squad, then to heroes throughout her world. She also trained to become a fighting threat from the world famous Richard Dragon, despite being wheelchair-bound.

She was a key player, gathering information for Batman and his operations throughout the years. She has a very good relationship with all the members of the Batman Family in recent years, and has served as a member of the Justice League and The Avengers.

Upon her complete transformation into the Oracle, she founded the Birds of Prey, a team of female heroes whom she employed and sent out as agents in her fight on crime as well as considering them extended members of the Batman Family. Black Canary, Dinah Lance, becomes the main operative in her unit, as the two have formed an incredibly strong friendship once they finally meet in person.

Recently, Barbara regained the use of her legs with the assistance of Beast and an unknown assistant and as retaken her mantle as Batgirl.

Characterization: Barbara is the Bat Family member who thinks the most about the impact her actions may have on the marginalized population of Gotham. She wonders if the superhero game is the right path for the city. She goes easy on the thieves and bandits that are on this life for lack of better choices. She was even able to understand some villains' issues. To sum up, she can walk on others' shoes and reflect on her own actions, what makes her an unique member of the Bat Family.

Friends and Foes: She is close to Batman and the Bat family as well as every member, past and present, of the Birds of Prey. She has contacts throughout the superhero community and is widely respected.

She is developing her own rogue’s gallery of villains, including Endless Winter, Mirror, Knighfall and Gretel.

Clean Up 3/14/13: Babs gets a much needed update.

Our last item in our GOTHAM LADIES' NIGHT hits the Aisle 1 shelves and it's a new build!

Image
He's only one man. He isn't in every patrol car, or walking every beat. It helps for other cops to see someone like me working next to them. Being a woman makes it harder. I end up with a lot to prove. - Renee Montoya

Toughness +3 (+2 without Defensive Roll, +4 against Ballistics), Fortitude +5, Will +7

COMPLICATIONS:
Addiction: Renee is a recovering alcoholic
Relationships: Renee still has strong feelings for her ex-girlfriend Kate Kane (Batwoman). She is close to her partner, Crispus Allen and seems to be getting to know The Question
Responsibility: To protect and serve Gotham City
Temper: She is working through them but she has some anger issues

Abilities 48 + Skills 29 (58 ranks) + Advantages 12 + Powers 0 + Defenses 13 = 102 / 102

Build Comments: Renee Montoya was a decent character in Batman TAS and became a pretty compelling one in the GCPD series. She springboarded off of that to become the new Question in the DCU, but I think they made a mistake with the runaway success of The Question in JLU. I hope they rectify that in the New 52, but I haven’t seen anything on that yet.

Anyway, I built Montoya in pre-Question mode for my Gotham where she is still partners with Crispus Allen and is one of the best cops on the force.

Secret Origins: Renee Montoya was a police officer in Gotham City. She was partnered with Harvey Bullock when she was promoted to homicide detective by Commissioner James Gordon. As partners, Bullock and Renee became close friends. After Bullock was promoted to Lieutenant, Crispus Allen became Renee's new partner.

The Story so Far: When Gotham was destroyed by an earthquake, Renee formed a friendship with the criminal Two-Face. She was able to reach the kinder Harvey Dent persona, and he fell in love with her. However, Two-Face was still mentally unstable. Believing that the only way to have her was by taking everything else away from her, his more sinister side later outed her as a lesbian to the public and had her framed for murder.

He then had the bus carrying her to prison attacked and kidnapped her, making it look like she had escaped. When Renee discovered that it was Two-Face who was behind everything, and that he did it because he was in love with her, she was incredulous. Two-Face then became more unstable and the two fought for control of his gun. Batman arrived in time to prevent the two from killing each other. Two-Face was put back in Arkham Asylum and Renee was cleared of all the charges. Her life was still in chaos, however, especially her family; while her younger brother knew about her sexuality, her very religious parents didn't, and disowned her upon discovering the truth.

Characterization: Renee is a good cop, but has several inner demons that she fights on a regular basis. She has had problems with anger and alcohol abuse, as well as coming to grips with her sexual orientation.

Friends and Foes: She has good friends in Crispus Allen and Harvey Bullock. Commissioner Gordon has always been in her corner as well. She is friends with her ex-girlfriend Kate Kane and has been supportive of Kate’s relationship with Maggie Sawyer.

Pistol +5 [Light Pistol +3]

DEFENSES:
Dodge +6 [DC16] Parry +6 [DC16]
Toughness +3 (+2 without Defensive Roll, +4 against Ballistics), Fortitude +5, Will +5

COMPLICATIONS:
Relationships: His family
Responsibility: To protect and serve Gotham City

Abilities 38 + Skills 19 (38 ranks) + Advantages 6 + Powers 0 + Defenses 12 = 75 / 75

Build Comments: Crispus Allen is not the host of The Spectre in the Thorpacoverse. He’s still a detective on the GCPD, one of the more streetwise of the crew, with tons of contacts and known as a bit of a roughneck. He and Montoya are like brother and sister, though, and are some of Gordon’s favorites.

I always liked the original Jim Corrigan as the host of the Spectre, but I think I am going to have to come up with someone else to bear the mantle. Maybe Pym….

Secret Origins: Crispus Allen had his start as a police officer in Metropolis but transferred to Gotham City with his wife Dore and his two teenaged sons Jake and Malcolm. He joined James Gordon's Major Crimes Unit and was partnered with Renee Montoya, replacing her old partner Harvey Bullock. Because of his well-dressed and proud style, he had to put up with Bullock referring to him as "Peacock." But he was a good detective. He was one of the GCPD's best, and he was so by doing things by the book.

When it came to the subject of Batman, he was no fan but understood the vigilante to be an unfortunate necessity of Gotham City.

The Story so Far: Following the shooting of James Gordon, Crispus alongside his partner Renne Montoya begin searching for Catwoman, the prime suspect in the shooting. However, Nightwing, Azrael, Batgirl and Robin manage to uncover evidence of her innocence with the shooter being revealed to be a Gotham cop by the name of Jordan Rich. The Gotham Police Department, arrested him and brought him in to gain a confession. During the course of the interrogation Cris plays good cop, while Montoya plays bad cop, attacking Jordan. However Cris's refusal to call in the Batman les to Jordan's being released.

When Bruce Wayne was framed for the murder of Vesper Fairchild, Cris was put as the primary detective on the case and he believed in Bruce Wayne's guilt. The evidence was clear. There seemed to be no reason to doubt it. After all, he had no idea this man was really Batman. Bruce Wayne going fugitive after being charged did not help Cris' impression on his guilt. Instead, Cris believed Wayne's butler Alfred somehow aided in the escape, yet he was not convinced that Wayne had actually left Gotham as most speculated. The case was closed when David Cain waltzed into the precinct and confessed to framing Wayne.

Friends and Foes: Crispus is good friends with Renee Montoya and Harvey Bullock. He has a family that he loves and a rivalry with alleged dirty cop Jim Corrigan.

We're still emptying the last truck from our Gotham location, and we've gotten to a J-Mart Favorite!

Image
My view is, when it comes to Gotham, you don't know it, brother. It knows you. And the moment you think otherwise, the moment you get too comfortable... that's when it stabs you in the back. Because above everything, Gotham is a mystery. - Harvey Bullock

HARVEY BULLOCK
PL: 5 (75 pts) - OPL: 5 ; DPL: 5

ABILITIES: STRENGTH 2, STAMINA 2, AGILITY 0, DEXTERITY 2, FIGHTING 5, INTELLECT 1, AWARENESS 2, PRESENCE 0

SKILLS: Athletics (+2), Deception 6 (+6), Expertise [Cop] 5 (+6), Expertise [Streetwise] 8 (+9), Insight 3 (+5), Intimidation 9 (+9) [Startle], Investigation 6 (+7), Perception (+2), Ranged Combat [Guns] 4 (+6), Stealth 5 (+5), Vehicles 4 (+6)

POWERS:
NONE

EQUIPMENT:
(25 pts)
Cell Phone, Standard: Feature 1 (Cellular Communication); 1 pt
Flashlight: Feature 1 (Illumination); 1 pt

Tonfa, Small: Bludgeoning Strength-Based Damage 1; 1 pt

Mid-Size Car: Size - L, Strength - 5, Speed - 5, Def - 8, Tough - 8; 10 pts

OFFENSE:
Initiative +0
Close Attack +5 [Unarmed +2; Tonfa +3]
Ranged Attack +2
Guns +6 [Heavy Pistol +4]

DEFENSES:
Dodge +5 [DC15] Parry +6 [DC16]
Toughness +4, Fortitude +5, Will +5

COMPLICATIONS:
Pain In The Ass: Harvey can be quite abrasive at times
Reputation: Lots of people think Harvey is a dirty cop on the take as well as having a rep for police brutality
Responsibility: To protect and serve Gotham City
Rivalry: The Bat Family

Abilities 28 + Skills 25 (50 ranks) + Advantages 10 + Powers 0 + Defenses 12 = 75 / 75

Build Comments: He’s probably coming in DC Universe (along with a lot of the builds I've done, but you know I gotta build DC stuff regardless because I have a sickness), but I had to build Harvey Bullock, he’s just too great. The epitome of the old, grumpy, rumpled cop, he’s been a mainstay of the Batman mythos forever, it seems.

In the Thorpacoverse, he doesn't much like the Bat family, but he's got a grudging respect them. The other "freaks" however...he won't hesitate to put a slug in their eyes, even if it means his badge.

Secret Origins: Harvey Bullock is perhaps the most controversial police officer in the Gotham City Police Department. His colleagues in the Major Crimes Unit will swear up and down that he is a good cop, despite his reputation for taking bribes, police brutality, and ties to organized crime being on the top. It is believed that Bullock is the one who gave up the location of James Gordon's shooter to the Mafia, as the shooter himself was actually in the witness protection program. He also stayed in Gotham City during the No Man's Land incident. Bullock has also been one of Batman's biggest foes on the GCPD, but has not gone to the extremes that others have to apprehend the vigilante. His partner on the GCPD was Renee Montoya, until he resigned, following an internal investigation. He became a private detective for a while until he rejoined the force.

The Story so Far: Following the events of Infinite Crisis, Bullock was back on the force and offered one chance. If he ever made a mistake, any mistake, he would be fired again. While he's still not a fan of the vigilantes, Bullock now assists Batman and Robin in their investigations. Or at least, he doesn’t openly go against them.

Now partners with Josie MacDonald, Harvey works with the new Batman after a church graveyard is defaced and a priest killed, even covering for the vigilante when Robin goes undercover as a boy wanted by the cult La Saligia.

Friends and Foes: Harvey has several friends on the force, but more detractors.

Nice to see the GCPD get some love... cancelling their comic was a crime, I tell you. I'm sure that the other five people that read it, besides me, would all agree!

Any chance of seeing the original toughest cop in Gotham City: Shotgun Smith?

Has anyone ever told you that you have great taste in comic books. I actually missed Gotham Central when it was coming out, as i was just getting back into comics in 03 when it first started coming out & i wasn't into the whole Bat Mythos thing. But having read it recently, its been added to my trade pull list, for eventual purchase... Unfortunately it is book number 113 through 116 on the DC side, so it may take me a while to purchase them.

The dude pulled a double-barreled sawnoff on the Batman. Regularly. He actually got kinder and gentler when he was booted of the GCPD and moved into the Gotham County Sheriff's office, but he still openned he comback appearences in the 90's by ramming the Redbird off the road with his car. Dude essentially took out the Batmobile with a four-door sedan.

Just like Bullock, I gotta respect anyone willing to follow the Dirty Harry school of police work in Gotham and be a good guy.

COMPLICATIONS:
Disability: At times, Langstrom's personality is more dominant and he can speak. and be reasoned with. At other times, especially when he has been in his Man-Bat form for a long period, he becomes animalistic, losing his ability to speak and most of his humanity. He also very near sighted in daylight.
Involuntary Transformation: Man-Bat can be turned back in Kirk Langstrom if his serum wears off or if he is injected with the proper antidote.
Relationships: No matter what state he is in, he deeply loves his wife Francine and will protect her at any cost.
Secret Identity: Most people do not know Man-Bat is Dr. Kirk Langstrom.
Vulnerable: He is vulnerable to visual dazzle effects and hypersonics.

Abilities 48 + Skills 12 (24 ranks) + Advantages 11 + Powers 20 + Defenses 11 = 102 / 102

Build Comments: I really liked Man-Bat as a kid. He was the first villain I ever saw Batman fight in the 70's with that rockin’ Neal Adams art. I liked the DCA build OK, but they had Kirk with his full faculties in his Man-Bat form. I prefer the more feral Man-Bat.

In the Thorpacoverse, he is pretty much as he is in canon. Langstrom tries to avoid taking the serum, but his urges often overtake him and the Man-Bat flies again. Although, he is getting better about remaining in control and is sometimes an ally of the Bat family.

Secret Origins: Dr. Kirk Langstrom, a scientist specializing in the study of bats, develops an extract intended to give humans a bat's sonar sense and tests the formula on himself because he is becoming deaf. The extract works, but it has a horrible side effect: it transforms him into a hideous man-sized bat. The serum also takes away his intelligence, so he goes on a mad rampage until Batman can find a way to reverse the effects.

The Story so Far: Later, Langstrom takes the concoction again, and Man-Bat returns. He also coaxes his wife, Francine Langstrom, into drinking the serum, and she goes through the same transformation, becoming She-Bat. Together, they terrorize Gotham City until Batman can once again restore them.

On some occasions, Langstrom takes the serum and retains enough intelligence to work for the forces of good. Recently, the Langstroms were attacked by Talia al Ghul and the League of Assassins. They tied up and gagged Francine, and then threatened to poison her if Kirk does not give her the Man-Bat formula. After Langstrom gave her the formula, she releases Francine as promised. Talia utilizes the mutagen to turn members of the League of Assassins into Man-Bats.

Following Batman's death, Kirk is haunted by nightmares of becoming Man-Bat and killing his wife. When Francine disappears, he takes the serum and tries to follow her. After an altercation with the Outsiders, he returns to his human form and is captured by Doctor Phosphorus, who reveals the serum is not necessary to trigger the change. Kirk discovers that Phosphorus has also captured Francine, and becomes Man-Bat to save her.

Characterization: Kirk Langstrom is a good, but tortured man. He has worked to remain in control of his Man-Bat persona, but if he remains in Man-Bat form for a prolonged time, he loses control over his animalistic side and works purely on instinct, making him prone to harm friend and foe alike.

Friends and Foes: Kirk and Francine remain committed to each other after all their struggles. He has been both and enemy and ally of the Bat Family.

Rivalry: Batman.

Abilities 54 + Skills 43 (86 ranks) + Advantages 21 + Powers 0 + Defenses 28 = 146 / 146

Build Comments: I always liked The Riddler, especially Frank Gorshin’s Riddler in the old campy 60’s Batman series. A couple of writers have tried to take him a darker direction, but I never liked that. He’s meant to be a mental threat to Batman, and to be a lighter villain. Gotham has enough darker ones. I loved Alex Ross’ take on him in Justice where he rolls with the big boys, but really seems out of place among Grodd, Luthor, Manta and others.

My Riddler is quite a bit less capable in combat than the DCA one, well, actually a LOT less capable, but he’s pretty good on defense because he’s used to trying to get away from combat instead of fighting.

Query and Echo are coming eventually.

Secret Origins: Edward Nashton was born into a broken home, his mother was absent and his father was abusive. When Edward was a young boy, he became excited at the idea of winning a puzzle contest at school. To increase his likelihood of winning, Edward sneaked into school during the night and practiced the puzzle until he could solve it with ease. He ended up winning, and was awarded a riddle book as a prize. Since that time, he has mastered puzzles, mind games, and riddles. Edward was profoundly intelligent, and would pass tests with apparent ease, something his father, out of jealousy, couldn't or wouldn't believe, and therefore attributed his success to cheating (supposedly catching him once) and beat on him repeatedly to keep him 'out of trouble,' or to stop him from lying. Out of the abuse Edward developed a compulsion he has become known for; he constantly endeavors to tell the truth to prove his innocence. This is where his obsession with riddles comes from. Unfortunately the abuse is also a main factor that drove him mad and to a life of crime.

The Story so Far: When Edward got older, he left home and became a carnival performer, using his skills to cheat carnival-goers out of their money. But this was not enough for him. He longed for something more, and became the Riddler, at the same time changing his name to Edward Nigma ("E. Nigma"), picking The Batman as an adversary, as he believes him to be an intelligent and more-than-worthy opponent.

Starting out as a simple informant and criminal profiler for the underworld of Gotham City, as well as for Batman, the Riddler slowly became more of a villain to Batman. It wasn't long before he became a main adversary to the Caped Crusader, constantly testing his analytical abilities to their limits. Over the years, the Riddler would earn his living through various heists and robberies, working his way up the criminal food chain, eventually even securing himself a couple wenches to do his bidding. He remains a mainstay of the Gotham underworld to the present day.

Characterization: The Riddler, unlike many of the other members of Batman's rogues gallery, is more of a cerebral than physical villain. Although he is quite suited for physical combat and often has weapons ready for use, he has probably always been among the least homicidal of the major Bat nemesis.

His riddles are in fact a bizarre obsessive compulsion; his attempts to stop himself from sending them has met with failure time and time again. This extends to the fact he cannot simply kill his opponents when he has the upper hand, but prefers to put them in a deathtrap to see if he can devise a life and death intellectual challenge that the hero cannot escape. However, of Batman's themed enemies, Riddler's compulsion is quite flexible, allowing him to commit any crime as long as he can describe it in a riddle or puzzle.

Friends and Foes: He has a long time rivalry with Batman and the Bat family. While he has assisted Batman on several occasions, for the most part, he yearns to defeat him, mainly by proving that he is smarter than him.

His two loyal henchwomen are Diedre Vance and Nina Damfino, known as Query and Echo. They were once employees of Pandora's Box, an underground dominatrix club, before banding together as two biker women robbing small convenience stores. One night, as they attempted to rob a store, they bumped into an unfortunate customer and forced him to surrender the goods. The customer was none other than the Riddler who too was breaking in at the same store. The Riddler was just starting his criminal career and was looking for thugs for hire and after seeing these two "kindred souls", he immediately hired them. He named them Query and Echo and they have been his off and on allies ever since.

As promised, here are Query and Echo:

Comments: I hadn’t really heard of much of Scott Snyder’s stuff until he took over Batman a couple of years ago, but OMG, has he turned into one of DC’s stars. His current run on Batman will probably go down as one of the best ever. And his recent (and kind of continuing) arc with the Court of Owls has been his usual great stuff. You can Wiki (or do yourself a favor and pick up the books) for the info, but to sum up, the Court of Owls have been controlling Gotham from behind the scenes for over a hundred years and up until now they’ve somehow stayed off Batman’s radar. But that is no longer the case since they decided Bruce Wayne had to die and they sent their master assassin, the Talon (William Cobb), to kill him. Obviously, that wasn’t going to work because he's the frickin' Batman (recon-ize 8) ), and so it’s full scale war with the Court unleashing 40 of their Talon assassins on the city and the Bat family between them and the murders of several prominent Gotham citizens, including Bruce, Lucius Fox, Jim Gordon and interestingly enough, Mr. Freeze. It’s all chronicled in the Night of the Owls crossover event that I cannot recommend enough.

Since I have been loving the arc, I had to whip up the Talons for my setting. These would be your standard Talon assassins. At PL8, with Wolverine regeneration and expert melee and thrown blade skills, these guys are street level nightmares, especially since I wouldn’t consider using the minion rule with them unless there are a ton of them attacking one person. And that has only happened once, with the group that stormed Wayne Manor. But it's almost unfair letting Batman take advantage of the minion rule.

Basically, all the Talons can regenerate from wounds almost instantly and if they are not frozen, they can come back from death pretty quickly, too. I probably undersold their Immortality, but I figure once a day is good enough for now. They are masters in close combat and with throwing blades, so you combine that with their regeneration and they are really tough outs for the Bat family.

I'm making updates to the "name" Talons I built before and I'll be adding some others now that I read all the Night of the Owls tie-ins. I'm probably even going to build the new heroic Talon from the new self-titled book that I picked up last week.

Nice Talons. They would be very tough for street level characters. But definitely fun to use. I really like your Riddler too.

Nice to see more "Gotham Central" love. It's funny- it was a great book, but had such limited appeal for comic book fans, so of course it ended up with a "Doom Patrol Fandom" of vocal smart people with good taste :). It'd actually do MUCH better on live action TV, but the whole superhero thing would make it weird for people- I'd gladly watch a TV series about it. Oddly, I found myself enjoying the more "secondary" crew just as much as the Montoya/Allen crew, particularly Driver & Chandler. My favourite moment was when I predicted Harvey Bullock's reaction to Montoya's being outed almost to the exact literal dialogue he used, and when I had the "eureka!" moment at the same time as the detective in the Firebug/Hobo camp/Babysitter case.
