And so did X-23! Poor Fang here's been killed at least once, and drew the unlucky-as-hell role as "Poor Man's Wolverine", which is kind of funny, considering he's based off of the guy upon whom Logan ripped the appearance off. So Fang gets to job. A LOT. Apparenly his whole race looks like this, because when he died, another one showed up in the next story as background filler. He's a fairly tough little Scrapper, having animalistic senses, claws and physical capabilities, but is a little light on well-roundedness, like most Guardsmen. He's pretty much a tracker who flies into melee, slashing away.

Lynx (MCP #123-130) wore it, at least by the end of her appearance. Apparently Wolverine was carrying around a lady's version of the costume.

Total: Abilities: 32 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: xx / Defenses: 13 (64)

-This fits those generic Background Guardsmen who show up from time-to-time. Various writers and artists throw in random faces that rarely show up again, given the huge roster of the team (and the fact that writers tend to bring the team back to it's founding roster as a default).

Arc- PL 9 (106): Bio-Electric Blast 10 (Feats: Accurate 2), Electric Aura 5 [42]
-A "New X-Men" introduced guy.
Chakar- PL 9 (104): Strength 5, Stamina 5, Fighting 10, Intelligence 2, Awareness 2, Presence 3, Expertise (Space Soldier) 8 (+10), "Shi'ar Senses" Senses 4 (Extended & Low-Light Vision, Extended Hearing, Acute Scent), Leaping 1 (15 feet), "Talons" Strength-Damage +1 [40]
-Chakar led Voltor, Binder & Kwill on a mission into Galador, where they were all killed by a treacherous ally.
Voltor- PL 8 (83): Bio-Electric Blast 8 (Feats: Accurate 2, Split) [19]
-A guy who showed up as a newbie Guardsman in "Rom: Spaceknight" and was killed by Pulsar.
Binder- PL 8 (82): Plasma Blast 8 (Feats: Accurate 2) [18]
-Voltor's partner, killed when a Shi'ar Dreadnought blew up.
Kwill- PL 8 (90): "Stun Quills" Affliction 8 (Fort; Impaired/Disabled/Unaware Senses) (Extras: Ranged, Cumulative) (Feats: Accurate 2) [26]
-Voltor's partner, also killed when a Shi'ar Dreadnought blew up.
Voltar- PL 8 (83): Bio-Electric Blast 8 (Feats: Accurate 2, Split) [19]
-Introduced to die in a single story (Realm of Kings). Obviously a replacement for Voltor.
K'tor- PL 6 (86): Strength 4, Stamina 4, Fighting 4, Intelligence 4, Awareness 3, Expertise (Politics) 4 (+8), "Shi'ar Senses" Senses 4 (Extended & Low-Light Vision, Extended Hearing, Acute Scent), Leaping 1 (15 feet), "Talons" Strength-Damage +1 [22]
-A generic Evil Bureaucrat.
Blackthorn- PL 8 (99): Stamina 7, "Plant Control" Snare 8, AE: Impede Movement 2, Protection 2 [35]
-A one-shotter Plant-Man from the early '80s who was there for a single story. He had a sword and shield at first, but it vanished by his second issue.
Moondancer- PL 6 (94): "Galactic Tracking" Senses 20 (Life Sense- Ranged 16, Tracking 2, Acute), Remote Vision 5 [30]
-Basically an obvious Dawnstar homage, right down to the buckskin outfit, this blue girl showed up in "Quasar" a few times and that's it.
Monstra- PL 9 (96): Strength 10, Stamina 10, Extra Limbs 2 [32]
-A wild, ugly alien punker (I hate punkers), Monstra fought The Beast for a bit.
Fader- PL 7 (71): Equipment 3 ("Spazgun"- Blast 6 Multiattack, Armour +2), Ranged Attack 4, Concealment 2 (Visuals) [7]
-Monstra's (apparent) boyfriend, who could hide in the Ultraviolet Spectrum. Of course, this didn't help him against The Beast's Super-Senses, and so he got beaned by a statue and was taken out of the fight.
Squorm- PL 6 (78): No Stamina, Immunity 30 (Fortitude Effects) [14]
-Squorm is so utterly useless in a fight that I find it's inclusion on the "Superguardians" weird. I mean, it's basically a bit liquid jelly thing that lost in seconds to an X-Man. Basically just there as a joke, I guess.
Schism- PL 6 (88): Summon Duplicate 5 (Extras: Heroic +2), Flight 2 [24]
-Like Squorm, Schism (a Duplicator- a white female half and black male half formed an androgynous character) was a useless fighter, simply having it's two heads bopped together by The Beast.
Mammoth- PL 9 (95): Strength 10, Stamina 10, Extra Limbs 1 "Trunk" [31]
-Lilandra's bodyguard, he was killed by Cassandra Nova.
Immundra- PL 9 (109): Strength 10, Stamina 10, Flight 6, Will +7 [45]
-Immundra has a bit of a "Cornfed Flying Brick" look to him (with Frank Quitely on art, he of course looks pudgy as hell and hideous), and was piloting the ship when Cassandra Nova killed him with a psionic assault. His higher Telepathic Resistance (higher Will Save) failed to help him.
White Noise- PL 9 (103): Strength 5, Stamina 5, "Sonic Scream" Dazzle 9 (Accurate 2), AE: Dazzle Cone 9, AE: Dazzle Area Perception 9, AE: Nullify Sonic Effects 9 (Extras: Ranged), "Shi'ar Senses" Senses 4 (Extended & Low-Light Vision, Extended Hearing, Acute Scent), Leaping 1 (15 feet), "Talons" Strength-Damage +1 [39]
-Possibly Deathbird's daughter, White Noise was a Sonic Screamer who only featured in one story, but has shown up in background scenes.
Black Light- PL 9 (101): Strength 5, Stamina 5, Black Blasts 9 (Accurate 2, Split), "Shi'ar Senses" Senses 4 (Extended & Low-Light Vision, Extended Hearing, Acute Scent), Leaping 1 (15 feet), "Talons" Strength-Damage +1 [37]
-White Noise's brother, who has the age-old "Generic Blaster Guy" power-set. They have a "Tomax & Xamot" thing that makes them feel the other's pain, which is a pretty bad weakness to have (you kick two asses for the price of one). Black Light was killed along with Neutron during the "War of Kings: Imperial Guard" mini-series.
Pn'zo- PL 10 (140): Strength 8, No Stamina, Protection 8, Extra Limbs 4, Snare 8, Ranged Attack 6, Electrical Aura 10 [76]
-Pn'zo is a bank-robbing criminal who is freed by Emperor Vulcan after swearing loyalty to him.
Neosaurus- PL 6 (84): Immortality 20 (one round) (Flaws: Requires Housing Bodies) [20]
-Neosaurus is actually a "magnificent artificial brain" that merely controls these turquoise reptilian creatures as housings for it's intelligence. It can presumably enter into other bodies, but we only ever saw one on-panel at once, and Wolverine EASILY killed it and stole it's Flight Patch, so they pretty well suck at fighting.

-Hobgoblin ain't exactly an original knock-off, like many Guardsmen are. He basically is a purple Chameleon Boy- a pallette swap, like Impulse. That said, he's one of the most useful and recurring Guardsmen, showing up all over the place and generally taking out at least one superhero because of his disguise powers. He can transform into some pretty big-ass monsters, but he's still only PL 10, and has a few less tricks than his Legion version. He was alleged to have died by another member of his race in a "Fantastic Four" issue,

Re: Jab's Builds: Cosmic Beings Done, Imperial Guard Template

Postby Jabroniville » Sat Sep 15, 2012 11:28 pm

Oh, and I adjusted my Master Power Level List to include the Cosmic Beings- I finally have a use for the upper-level of my scale. Now, Eternity is more powerful than Galactus, The Beyonder (in his initial form) is a bit beyond THAT, The Infinity Gauntlet allows a wielder to one-up not only the PL 24 Eternity, but the PL 24 Death, PL 21 Galactus and a half-dozen other PL 20s SIMULTANEOUSLY, and The Living Tribunal attains PL 45 by virtue of his ability to de-power the Gauntlet at will.

P.S. Reading "The Infinity Crusade" right now... it's kind of a boring sack of boring. The whole thing is basically a big mystery at first as to what's going on (which gets tiresome when it's a long story), AND it suffers from some annoying characterization. I was always iffy on the comedy character Pip The Troll, but this story really showcases how bad he is- you ever join an RPG group with that guy who just DOES NOT want to play or take the game seriously at all? The guys that are the reason why ever "Looking For Players" RPG poster in every dork-shop in history says "Looking for MATURE players?" instead of "Looking for Players"? Pip is basically being played by that guy- he stinks, he insults everyone, he puts on a silly costume to make a mockery of the serious events going on, he declares himself the leader, and he takes a swing at Reed Richards for NO GOOD REASON, all like that annoying, immature kid we've all gamed with that didn't want to actually play a real game- he just wanted to goof off and screw around with the game ... it wouldn't be so bad if Pip was ACTUALLY FUNNY, but Jim Starlin has never been a particularly guffaw-worthy writer.

The Imperial Guard! Awesome!

I'm a huge Legion fan, and a huge fan of Dave Cockrum's design work (and the whole Dark Phoenix saga), so the Imperial Guard are definitely favorites of mine.

I always kind of wished that a Legion writer would 'poke back' by introducing wannabe Legionnaires based loosely off of the rare Imperial Guardsmen who *weren't* Legion riffs, like Hussar, Earthquake and Manta.

-Nightside's a rip of Shadow Lass, but has the added bonus of being part of Marvel's common "Darkforce"-themed characters, which gives her some extra bonuses that the Legionnaire does NOT have, namely the Dimensional Movement power with Portal, Attack & a "Freezing" Power on it. She's nowhere NEAR as versatile as Darkstar or Cloak, though, having only a pair of Alt-Effects.

-Stuff is one of the quirky Morrison Guardsmen, created as an Advance Scout meant to spy on the X-Men. He disguised himself as a Japanese kid at Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters, but got caught by the Stepford Cuckoos (though "Solid-oids", one of them- Esme- was dating him for a while), who brainwashed him into being the "perfect boyfriend" since he could shapechange. He was kind of dumb and loser-y, and got his butt kicked a lot, but he ended up being used as the means to Cassandra Nova's defeat- she was trapped in his comatose body. He's not much of a fighter otherwise, but he's good as a spy & saboteur.

-Hussar (named for Hungarian light cavalry) has no real Legion link, but is one of the more-recurring Imperial Guardsmen (even showing up in Ultimate Alliance!) because of her odd red-skinned, hoofed appearance. I depicted her as one of the more skilled Guardsmen, packing a pretty useful PL 10 quality weapon. I wasn't quite sure if the Stun was HER power or her whip's, and the thing gets broken an AWFUL lot for a Device, but I ultimately went with a Device anyways, limited to her or others immune to the Stunning qualities of the weapon. It's quite powerful and has a good range, but she's still ultimately quite vulnerable, often going down in team battles because she's focused on a single opponent and gets nailed by someone else.

Well, Polish Hussars DID wear wings ...

On a more serious note one could argue that this is a name chosen through the translation convention of replacing the incomprehensible ("moustache-wearing fast-foot-mounted sword-killer") with a terrestrial equivalent.

-Magique (formerly Magic), like Princess Projectra (on whom she's based), is a team player first and foremost (as well as an obvious icon of the '70s), using her non-combat abilities to their maximum, helping her teammates out by creating false impressions, making them invisible, etc. She's also ensorcerelled people with Glamours before, but they've proven partially ineffective. Deep-down, she's just a fragile Mage archetype, but with far fewer base abilities in the Array than most Mages ever get (that'll happen when you have one appearance every four years). She even got KILLED after her tracking "Witch Mark" got placed onto herself.

i think Hussar's longevity is helped by the fact that she's a very simple design/concept. makes her easy on both the artist, writers and occassional animator to use

-Manta's pretty one-note, though not named for a Legionnaire. Just a Blinding-based character, who was actually created by John Byrne in the post-Cockrum Guard. She stuck around, but hasn't done overly much, but she's useful for team battles, like most sense-affecters. Her look is inventive and nice, resembling a do-nothing female villain named "Ion", with a creepy pale face and a big flowing cape.

Favorite one happened during the 12 year gap (the only Legionaires that don't exist anymore). He was defending Polar Boy during his trial. Tries to get him off by putting a prosthetic forehead on him and saying he is crazy. The judge screws up and give the prosecutor the means to release him. So then MEL is trying to help Polar Boy take the head off, but it shruk because it got cold (go figure).

"Oh my gosh, he's eating that man's head."

"It's okay, m'am. I'm a senator."

I'm a big fan of the part where he claims Polar Boy has to be deported because he's a green Lantern, and provides proof by hitting him in the face with a pie, thus showing he is powerless against the color yellow.

Also, nice to see the Guard. i may have to see if I can find a place for them when I do that cosmic campaign.

Complications:
Disabled (Insane)- Vulcan is prone to foolish and flat-out evil decisions. Nobody close to him trusts him for even a second.
Motivation (Power & Mayhem)- Vulcan is Caligula-esque in his desire to commit heinous acts for evil's own sake. He also likes being Majestor of the Shi'ar.
Enemy (Havok)- Vulcan has a personal vendetta against his brother Alex Summers. Curiously, he doesn't encounter Scott a whole bunch (Brubaker wasn't in charge of Cyclops, I guess).

Total: Abilities: 48 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 20 / Powers: 138 / Defenses: 19 (241)

-Vulcan is the culmination of a handful of off-hand remarks made in the 1990s of a "Third Summers Brother"- a Shi'ar-bred child of Christopher & Katharine Summers (the parents of Cyclops & Havok), bred to adult age (because it's comics and that happens a lot). Early comments implied that Adam-X- The X-Treme was that Summers Brother (he was Shi'ar-looking, and had some link to a "Milbury", which was Summers-Enthusiast Mr. Sinister's alter-ego's name), but since it was the 1990s anymore, they dropped that one pretty quickly. He was introduced to the X-Universe in an idea I REALLY hated- that Professor X had sent ANOTHER group of mutants after Krakoa when the original X-Men were captured, but they were killed and thus Charles sent in ANOTHER group (the fabled Giant-Size X-Men). THEN Chuck mind-wiped everyone involved so they didn't remember his "Lost" X-group. This story had the effect of making Professor X into an even BIGGER dick than fans thought he was, and straight-up made him a hateable character.

-Vulcan, then an amnesiac, eventually recovered and regained his memories. He responded to Chuck's dickishness by unleashing hell, killing Banshee, and making all the X-Men his enemies. He was beaten, but flew to the Shi'ar Empire, killed Emperor D'Ken (after first healing him to reveal himself and gain his trust, and some power within the Empire), became Majestor of the Empire, killed a ton of the Imperial Guard, then led the Empire through a horrible Civil War with Lilandra's defenders (she was soon killed), THEN "The War of Kings" against the Kree Empire and it's rulers, The Inhumans. At the end of the story, he & Black Bolt were "killed", though Blackagar returned shortly thereafter in "The Fantastic Four".

-Vulcan was a character I had a hard time liking. First off, his origin is confusing and ludicrously-complex EVEN FOR A SUMMERS FAMILY MEMBER. This alone is nearly impossible. He also acts as a "Caligula" archetype, that is, a ruler with unlimited power, and a pathological sociopathy that really comes across as forced. Now, I can understand the popularity of the trope- the real emperor Caligula was said to be JUST as bad in real life (The show "I, Claudius" portrayed him in a truly horrific manner, like the time he impregnated his own sister, and then butchered her alive and ate his own unborn child), and great stories can be told about this character type (like the aforementioned BBC show, which even has PATRICK STEWART WITH HAIR in it!). But the problem is, Vulcan just runs around saying horrible things, acting like a putz, and being evil for the sake of evil. He's not so much disturbed as a giant prick. It just makes him annoying and faux-funny when he's supposed to be disgusting and scary. So boo to Vulcan.

-Vulcan his hideously powerful, being stronger than any Earth-based hero, and being a match for near-Cosmic Beings. PL 14 Area Attacks, and PL 14 in most other ways, he hits like a Cosmic Hero (+18 Damage), has TONS of varied powers (Healing, Force Fields, Power Drains strong enough to drop Adam Warlock in seconds, and any type of Energy creation), and he's even pretty much immune to Mental Attacks. The dude is CRAZY tough.
