Also, there was at least one mention of two other European campuses being built-one in London. Might help stem the tide of British super crime, and make for fun interschool rivalries outside of the Trials and such.

The only challenge is stocking it. Looking at the current class roster, if the United Kingdom had their own school, they'd have a whopping five students: Mira, Anne, Kirstie, Violet, and BK. Possibly six, if you count Lexus. He's half Scottish, so... maybe five-and-a-half?

QUWAH (Power Level 2)

Real Name: Mouloud Poundstone
Height / Weight: 5’8” / 144 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Black / Brown
Place of Birth: Oran, Algeria (June 9, 1994)
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #8

Physical Description: Mouloud has russet skin with shoulder-length black hair. He tends to favor loose clothing devoid of colour—typically white.

Relationships: James Poundstone (father), Nabila Poundstone (mother), Assia Sahraoui (maternal aunt, deceased), Hassan Sahraoui (cousin), Antar Sahraoui (cousin)

Biography: Born a Sunni Muslim, Mouloud grew up believing that there would come a day when he was welcomed into paradise and attained a closeness with Allah. As he grew older, however, the avid reader learned about the sufi—a group of Muslim who strive to draw even more closer to their God and fully embrace all that Allah is in this life.

Believing that he was born with a tawhid—an inborn sense of oneness—Mouloud strove to return to a pure state embodied by Abraham and Muhammad; Mouloud saught to resurrect his fitrah through complete and total pacifism.

NVAE: queare verum—Motivated entirely by a love of God, Mouloud refused to use his uncanny strength to defend himself when his cousin, Antar Sahraoui, selected him to be a candidate for the shadier dealings of the Islamic Relief Foundation…

Antar and his brother Hassan both had roles in the group which was nothing more than a front for a terrorist organization operated by Jihad, the Neo-Sapien who orchestrated the 9/11 attacks.

When his mother contacted the New Vindicators Academy for help, Quintessence arrived along with four students: Current, Greystone, Impasse, and Sublime. Their investigation led them to the Islamic Relief Foundation, a front for Al-Akhwan. Inside, they discovered a lab researching the ability to bestow normal humans with simulacrums of a Neo-Sapien’s ability. Together, the young heroes destroyed the facility, and rescued Mouloud.

Fearing retribution from Al-Akhwan, Mouloud and his mother were taken to the Vienna school, where Mouloud enrolled as a student and his mother found employment.

GLAMOUR (Power Level 1)

Real Name: Mary Ljungdahl
Height / Weight: Varies (Typically 5'8" / 120 lbs.)
Hair / Eyes: Varies (Typically Blonde / Blue)
Place of Birth: Skellefteå, Sweden (April 9, 1991)
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #8

Physical Description: It is presently unknown what Glamour normally looks like, given her abilities. It is theorized that in her natural form, there is an aspect of her appearance she is ashamed of. She normally appears as a very attractive young woman--the image of perfection.

Relationships: Ingvar Ljungdahl (father), Jannick Salchow (mother), Beda Ljungdahl (paternal grandmother), Swietopolk Ljungdahl (paternal uncle), Unnamed Aunt (maternal step-aunt), Martin Curie (ex), Elle Curie (friend), Dag Schenkenberg (boyfriend), Herta Radikovich (friend)

Biography: Little is known about Mary’s life before she was recruited to the New Vindicators Academy of Europe, beyond that her parents separated when she was 14-years-old.

NVAE: quaere verum—During a weekend visitation with his daughter, Ingvar Ljungdhal, a career criminal, learned about his daughter’s Neo-Sapien power to alter her appearance. Immediately he fled with the girl, planning to exploit her talent for monetary gain. When her mother reported her missing, the New Vindicators Academy of Europe sent a team to investigate.

Named as an interim prefect, Ursa was tasked with finding the girl. With Kiln as a chaperone, Ursa took Gae’bolg, Pachyderm, Prodigy, Sprite to Sweden. After talking with Mary’s mother, the local police, and Mary’s paternal uncle, they eventually found Mary and her father at her grandmother’s house.

Reuniting her with her mother, the young heroes offered Mary the opportunity to leave with them and enroll at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe.

Mary accepted, and for a brief period became involved romantically with Martin Curie. Though their relationship was brief, she remained close with his sister, Elle, another new arrival at the school.

NVAE: sanguine bellum—In the wake of Laputa’s defeat, Mary began dating Dag Schenkenberg. Their relationship experienced a slight hiccup when he became the victim of Venefica’s powers. After the revelation that he was not in control of himself, he and Mary resumed their relationship.

Following the arrival of the underage members of Laputa on campus, Mary took to defending them from the other students, even going so far as to become a friend and confidant to Herta.

The only thing that stuns me about Mouloud is his lack of Toughness. I understand as a pacifist he might not have a high tolerance for pain (not subjecting himself to it that often) and that super-strength does not necessarily equate to extra-healthy, but you'd think with the extra density of muscle fibers super-strength requires he might have a couple ranks of protection or the tough feat just to approximate how solid his body is. Given his complete lack of combat aptitude, he could have a +4 to his Toughness save and not break caps.

That's just my thought anyway.

EDIT: And here I was convinced that Mary was secretly Tallemaja, but unless that build is a Trojan Horse, there's just not much likelihood of that being the case.

I'm also surprised Poundstone's super strength doesn't translate into any unarmed damage. That makes his pacifism less of a big deal, really-nobody would care about Achilles staying in his tent if he couldn't fight.

And about Mary, given how her abilities have been depicted, shouldn't she have Attractive as an Enhanced Feat (probably multiple ranks really)

Sorry if this sounds like a bunch of whining, I'm always happy to see new builds.

I've always viewed Super-Strength as being outside of the area of reason. Take any strong female character: Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Ms. Marvel, Rogue... They manage to be able to toss tanks around like they're nothing without sacrificing that "soft" look: their powers don't render them these grotesque, muscular women.

Sort of like how those characters fly without a real scientific explanation, they're strong without all of the physical things being that strong does to your body: no walls of super-hard muscle and veins popping through the skin.

Arthur Eld wrote:I'm also surprised Poundstone's super strength doesn't translate into any unarmed damage. That makes his pacifism less of a big deal, really-nobody would care about Achilles staying in his tent if he couldn't fight.

Eh, I see it more of a guy completely unwilling to live up to his potential. In practice, the suggested feats for Super-Strength are nasty. Bracing, Counter Punch, Groundstrike... These are brutal powers in practice. Mouloud is a guy who could justifiably take the lot of them, but he doesn't. Realistically, the school would be working with him, showing him new ways to utilize his strength. He's not going to bother though. He refrains from learning how to use his strength to hurt people. Sure, you could argue that effects like Groundstrike are pacifist in that they trip, not do damage. To Mouloud, it doesn't matter. It's engaging in violence, and he won't have any part of it.

That does sound like something I'd do...

She should. Good idea!

#299: Nick Bottom

Postby Michuru81 » Sat Jan 18, 2014 12:54 pm

NICK BOTTOM (Power Level 10)

Real Name: Nick Bottom
Aliases: The Weaver, John Cooper, Henry Condell, ect.
Height / Weight: 5’10” / 154 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Brown / Green
Place of Birth: Shottery, Warwickshire, England (April 1, 1555)
First Appearance: Illuminati #4

Physical Appearance: Nick Bottom appears to be a man in his mid-30’s with long, brown hair and just the right amount of stubble. As far as his wardrobe is concerned, Bottom has not quite escaped the grunge look that permeated the 1990’s: he wears flannel shirts over T-shirts that advertise bands no longer recording, ratty jeans, and mid-calf boots.

Relationships: Isaac Newton / The Astronomer (former teammate)

Biography: In the summer of 1590, Nick Bottom had the night of his life… Caught up in a war between extra-dimensional immortals, Bottom was magically compelled to spent a night in the loving arms of Titania, Queen of the Fey (albeit transfigured into an anthropomorphic donkey). When morning came, he woke to find no evidence of their tryst. Believing it all to be a dream, the weaver told one of his playwright friends everything he could remember.

Unbeknownst to Bottom, he had been transformed by the experience. From that day forward, the man ceased to age. Further, he found he retained a fraction of the unnatural allure that had allowed a donkey to bed a queen.

Through the ages, Nick Bottom has achieved renown under several pseudonyms.

ILLUMINATI: The Circle Chase—Sometime in the 1970’s, the Illuminati’s numbers had dwindled. With the bulk of their artifacts entrusted to the Aurelius, the remaining members divided the shards of the Sephirot up, in an effort to protect humanity from the threat the rune posed.

When one of their own designed to assemble the Sephirot, Bottom selected a Joseph Higgins to safeguard his part of the relic, thus freeing him of his burden and affiliation with the organization.

NVAE: quaere verum—Though Isaac Newton stepped down as the headmaster of the New Vindicators Academy of Europe, he did not leave it without his protection. He charged several of his allies with watching over the school and certain individuals he knew would be instrumental to fighting Laputa.

Amongst these agents Newton deployed was Nick Bottom, the Weaver. Nick slipped into the school and planted himself as the institute’s new performing arts teacher—all without the knowledge of the institute’s headmistress. Nick had been told by the former headmaster that there were two students Newton trusted implicitly. Believing this to mean the two prefects the man had chosen, Nick moved to work to steer Lex Murphy and Martin Curie along in the battle against Laputa.

It was thanks to his help that Martin was able to prove Captain Ronald Nelson’s involvement with the group, but his crypt ways won him no favor in Lex’s eyes. The two clashed—violently—and Bottom was forced to reveal his purpose to the American.

NVAE: sanguine bellum—In the wake of Laputa’s downfall, Bottom remained with the school—now with the administration’s blessing. The man now teaches music, theatre, and related classes.

#300: Libra

Postby Michuru81 » Sat Jan 18, 2014 7:33 pm

LIBRA (Power Level 12)

Real Name: Unknown
Aliases: Bob Atalata
Height / Weight: 5’10” / 162 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Brown / Green
Place of Birth: Hyperborea, Mu
First Appearance: New Vindicators #66

Biography: Before the fall of Mu, Libra was one of the Areopagus—the twelve magi who advised the Aeolians. When the continent was facing destruction at the hands of a possessed Odin, Libra advised Aeolus and Eos to flee to the Astral Plane. Effectively condemning them to a lifetime imprisoned there, Libra led his fellow mages in the creation of a suit of armor that would bestow the wearer with magical abilities. Each piece of the armor also contained the soul of one of the mages, with Libra putting his essence into a pair of rings. If someone Libra does not deem worthy wears those rings, he is able to take over their body, granting him a small form of immortality.

NEW VINDICATORS: beatae memoriae—Libra first appeared in Japan where he bestowed three pieces of the Areopagus armor to Deimos: Capricorn, Gemini and Scorpio. He accompanied Deimos to New York and while Deimos took on the Vindicators, Libra challenged Jetstream. Ultimately, Jetstream lost the will to go on and allowed Libra to kill her.

NEW VINDICATORS: dulcis amor—Libra next appeared before Mithril. He explained that he was drawn towards those whose hearts were unbalanced and told the heroes of Jetstream’s death. Offering Mithril the same ending, all present were surprised when Melody accepted his challenge on Mithril’s behalf.

Rumble discovered a way to enter Libra’s barrier with the Aurelia’s help and the two attempted to save Melody. Ultimately, Libra killed both Melody and Rumble and when the barrier broke he declined any further challenges as he had been injured. When pressed for a battle, Libra displayed a startling prowess for arcana that intimidated the Vindicators and allowed him to leave once more…

NEW VINDICATORS: felo de se—Libra was content to stand by and watch as Deimos took on his twin brother but when Phobos realized he was about to be finished he drew one of Libra’s swords to deny Deimos the kill. Ultimately, Libra came out on top and Phobos’ blood was now on his hands.

NEW VINDICATORS: contratia contrariis curantur—Drawn towards those whose hearts are confused and unbalanced, Libra next appeared before Quinton Jorgenson. Viewing his challenge as a release from his punishment, Quinton moved to accept, only to have Boson draw the sword instead. As she began to engage Libra in battle, her body was deconstructed and replaced with Quintessence.

Quintessence continued the battle in Boson’s place and as Libra moved to deliver the killing blow, his dark side emerged. Quintessence transformed into Paragon and the deceased Nephilim continued the battle with the Areopagus. Still, it wasn’t enough to bring the heroes victory and Libra claimed another victim, ending Paragon’s life (again) and Quintessence’s in the process.

NEW VINDICATORS: sanguis ac ferroque—Shortly after the Basileus arrived on Earth, Coldfire made his move and attacked the would-be king. Libra moved to join his emperor in battle and Deimos stood in his way. Asking him how two-against-one was balanced, Deimos took one of Libra’s swords and moved to take revenge for Libra’s stealing the joy of killing Phobos. Ultimately, Deimos slew Libra and took up his artifacts.

    LIBRA: The Rings

DEVICE 28 (Libra; hard to lose; Power Feats: Indestructible)

Libra: Create Object 20 (Power Feats: Innate, Progression 6 [500’], Selective, Triggered [when the challenge is accepted]; Extras: Duration [Continuous, +1], Impervious [+1], No Saving Throw [+2]; Flaws: Limited [trapping with objects, -1], Uncontrolled [death breaks the barrier, -1]), Mimic 10 (all powers; Extras: Range [Perception, +2]; Flaws: Limited [challenger, -1])

Michuru81 wrote:Pretty simple: when the wearer issues a challenge, and that challenge is accepted, a barrier forms around the pair. Basically, it's a big Create Object only using the trapping rules, and doing so without allowing a saving throw to escape.

Once the wall goes up, it's practically indestructible--breaking only when one of the two people inside dies. So long as the challenge is on going, Libra allows the wearer to copy their opponent's powers.

Next is the form Libra assumed through most of the story: Bob Atalata (both names are palindromes, thus they are perfectly balanced, because I'm a dork)...

Michuru81 wrote:The first thing to mention is Libra's using Bob's physical abilities, such as they are. The heroes should have just waited until his back was turned and stabbed him--coulda saved a whole lotta lives... In an actual fight, Libra should be roughly as tough as his opponent is. Against Bulwark? He'd get some Impervious Protection to shield him from attack. Against Boson, he'd have a Force Field. Against Sclera, he'd probably be a bit screwed... Still, he's not meant to be entirely self-reliant: he should make the most out of what his opponent can do.

In this form Libra loses his Immunity to Fortitude effects, as he's a person and not a ghost possessing a pair of rings. Self-explanatory.

Libra only pulled out his magic in the fight against Deimos, where he said he was capable of doing anything the other Areopagus can do. Rather than complicate his stats more than they already are, most of these are best used as power stunts.

Awesome Libra build!

I'd love to see the rest of the Areopagus statted up, even if just as their respective artifacts. I always liked that concept.

Yeah, Libra and the Areopagus were pretty cool. A bit above the paygrade of the NVAE kids, so I'm kinda glad that particular story got told elsewhere.

IRONSIDE (Power Level 10)

Real Name: Rex Riggs
Aliases: Henri Leroux
Height / Weight: 6’ / 200 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Black / Brown
Place of Birth: Manhattan, New York (August 15, 1962)
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #12

Physical Description: Rex appears to be a man in his mid-40s but is in excellent shape despite being middle aged. He has very tan skin due to all the years spent in the elements on various mercenary jobs, with short hair on the side and a somewhat shaggy top with an almost permanent 5 o’clock shadow. Rex seems to favor wearing BDU pants and shirts with boots while working and in his down time he’ll simply wear a plain t-shirt with his ‘work clothes’. He doesn’t talk often but when he does, his gravely voice cuts through the air with authority.

Biography: Rex Riggs grew up like most kids in New York, running the streets but wasn’t a true problem child. Most of his arrest record comes from guilt by association, the bad friends he ran around with getting him into trouble. Despite this Rex managed to stay out of jail, getting a job working construction, it was on the job that his powers manifested. Rex fell from the third story of a building he was working but when he hit the ground all that happened was a small crater in the ground and his clothes were ripped from where his coworkers had tried to hold onto him. Rex was fired from his job as the contractor didn’t want to deal with some of the Neo-Sapien hate groups that inhabit New York and Rex was unable to find a job for several months before finally becoming a janitor at a heat treating factory, though they only hired him because he could work near the furnaces without having to worry about being injured.

But even that wouldn't last as he was attacked one night by a small group of workers who wanted to get rid of the ‘freak’. Even though the angry men couldn't hurt him, Rex still was frightened and ran away; awkwardly fighting off those who followed after him until he ran in between the two of the furnaces to deter his most determined pursuers from following.

NEW VINDICATORS: sic semper tyrannis - Hiding in his small apartment, Rex heard when the armored man, that was named Mister Mayhem by the newspapers, offered a place for all Neo-Sapiens to come live. It sounded like a dream to him and he feared it was a trap but he still went to the designated place, Ellis Island, and quickly found himself in Moksha. There he finally felt able to relax, not worried about anyone trying to come after him just because of his being a Neo-Sapien, and he was given a job - to be part of the defense force to protect his new home land based on his powers.

But then the Vindicators IV arrived at the behest of the American government Rex, like many other members of the newly formed defense force, wasn’t allowed to be part of the initial group to oppose them due to his lack of combat experience. But he, and the others, were kept busy trying to maintain calm when it was revealed that the military had launched missiles at Moksha. Thankfully Bastion and the others were able to deal with that threat but before either the Vindicators or the Defense Force could resume their fight, Walkabout settled the matter by taking the people of Moksha and transporting them all over the world.

NVAE: sing - Rex next appeared in South Africa as one of the commanders of the Ugandan Unity Brigade under the guidance of General Basenji, were he was better known as Ironside, along with a few other of the former residents of Moksha (Bluster, James Udall, Skew, Sossus Vlei and Larry Harrison) who were fighting freedom fighters (Jerry Meyers, Joseph Cahan, Matt Kowalski, Mustafa Rauf, Philip Sonnemaker) determined to make Basenji and his men pay for the atrocities they’d committed in Ugangda. Seeing Otso Karell’s (aka the New Vindicator known as Ursa) plea on national television for information about his missing father the UUB commanders came up with a plan to use the boy as bait to draw out his father and his allies to finally finish them off.

After tricking Otso into coming to Uganda the commanders were able to pull off their plan: dumping Joseph Cahan, Matt Kowalski and Otso in Rwanda, they captured the remaining freedom fighters and a few days later publically executed them to show other resistants what would happen to them.

COMPLICATIONS: Disability (Due to his Unbreakable Skin, Rex's sense of touch is basically non-existant. He can only feel something if he grips it as hard as he can and in many cases this could be a problem), Prejudice (Neo-Sapien), Quirk (Because of years living with skin that's virtually impossible to break open, Rex doesn't fear many things that most others would in a fight), Reputation (one of the commanders in the UUB under General Basenji)

Attributes 34 + Skills 25 (88 ranks) + Feats 39 + Powers 14 + Combat 16 + Saves 20 = 150 pts.

Notes & Comments wrote:After talking to Michuru and getting his permission to post this buidl (seeing as how it is his thread here and all) here is the character I created for part of Ursa's last adventure in all his gruff glory – Ironside.

He’s meant to be a melee nightmare between his +10 rank Impervious Toughness & his combat skills, but at range it’s a different story as he’s as easy to hit as most other people are but then his Impervious helps him out a lot there too. Otherwise he’s a normal human as far as his stats go; he needs sleep, to eat, more importantly breathe, and such so he’s not unstoppable in a fight but he’ll definitely be a handful for folks who like to handle problems up close.

Yeah, Riggs is a badass. What with the recent developments for Manu Bennet's character on Arrow the picture is even more fitting.

I'll have to post Jimmy up on my own thread in a little while-probably with a 3E conversion as well, just cause.

I like Ironside. Indeedy I do. Now I may have to petition Michy to let me put Sossus Vlei up here as well (not having a build thread of my own).
