Joe Anderson was your typical thirty-four-year-old High School drop out. He struggled to make ends meet in a series of dead end jobs that were doomed to end as soon as the busy season ended or the economy took a downturn. To his credit Joe kept on marching forward, doing his best, but always with the want ads in his coat pocket.
Then a friend of a friend hooked him up with a job as a supervisor in a factory. Joe was ecstatic. Not only was it easily the highest paying job he’d ever held, but it had a great deal more security than any of his previous jobs too. Joe was on cloud nine until he happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
On his way to work one morning traffic was stopped where the hero Lyger III was battle a huge mutated monster. Joe was among the crowd of rubbernecks who exited their cars to watch a genuine super battle up close and personally.
The battle proved extremely brutal. The monster had Lyger beat in speed, strength, and endurance. The hero was hanging in the fight through intelligence. At one point Lyger unloaded his shuriken launcher at the monster, harming it severely. What no one else saw was that one of the shuriken that had merely clipped the monster continued on into the crowd of onlookers. That stray shuriken hit Joe who quickly retreated from the scene. Rather than go to the hospital and report what happened he bandaged his wound himself and went to work. By nine am the wound burned, by ten Joe had a fever, by noon he passed out.
Joe woke up four days later in the emergency room to two unsettling discoveries. The first was that he was fired the day he passed out. Apparently Joe’s friend of a friend got him the job by boasting about how Joe never got sick, the factory’s owner thought he’d been lied to and fired the non-unionized Joe. The other unsettling discovery was his medical bill, far more than he could ever afford without his job.
In the days that followed Joe recovered slowly, slowly enough where he couldn’t get a new job. He was evicted from his apartment and began sleeping under a bridge with other homeless people in an attempt to find a warm place to stay.
He was throwing newspaper into a fire one evening when he accidentally put his hand too close. He burned himself. He lashed out without thinking and kicked the steel drum the fire was in. He’d kicked the piece of metal nearly fifty yards. Realizing that he’d somehow gotten super powers from the mutant’s blood he looked at the Newspaper he was burning, a picture of Lyger III fighting the mutant monster on the front. He grinned wide, he was going to get revenge for his ruined life.
From that moment on Joe Anderson has gone by the name of Pinnacle. He used his heightened strength, agility, and endurance to take what he wanted. More than anything though he’s used his powers to try and defeat Lyger. The hero has managed to defeat him repeatedly however. The armored hero discovered that Joe’s immune system had radically changed and that he’d lost most of his natural human defense against disease and poison. Both Joe and Lyger have discovered, accidentally, that exposure of any kind to the chemical compound that created the mutant monster whose blood gave Joe is powers causes Joe’s mental facilities to slowly break down. Lyger fears that if Pinnacle is exposed to too much of the chemical he’ll turn into a new mutant monstrosity, possibly a more dangerous one.
