Name for an aquatic hero?

Postby Unbeliever » Mon Apr 11, 2011 6:32 am

Superhero names are always a challenge for me. Usually I just steal something, but w/ aquatic heroes it's tough.

The basic premise is the exiled prince of Atlantis who has relocated to the surface w/ a small group of his people and has agreed to be part of an Avengers-style team in exchange for asylum. He's a paragon-type w/ an emphasis on super-speed and has water manipulation powers, kind of like a water-based Green Lantern or Aqualad from the new Young Justice. In short, a lot like Ultimate Namor, in powers but not personality.

I'm not averse to him just going by his name, like Namor does (or Thor, for that matter), though I wanted to try out some more "superhero-y" types of names, too.

Thanks.

Off the top of my head:

Tidal Wave, referencing hitting hard and moving quickly.

Seaway, referencing a passage between 2 worlds: land and sea.

Bounding Main, a song referencing leaping ocean waters.

Prince Fathom, referencing title and depth.

Seajammer, like a windjammer only ocean powered.

In the South Park episode, there is a aquatic hero called Sea-Man.

Undertow

Hammerhead

Much of this would depend on his powers, and as much as it shames me to admit it, I am not that familiar with the examples you cite....

How about Tangaroa (Maori sea god: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tangaroa )?

Nice break from all the "Poseidons" and "Aqua(your name here)" out there, IMO.

I've used Redtide for an aquatic villain during the cold war-era, and the second Redtide was his son and designated heir of his authoritarian communist regime of the atlantean city-state he rules. :)

You can always just use a Greek or Latin variation on common words:

Oceanus
Okeanos
Maricole
Ultramarine
Necton/Nekton
Thalassocrat
GM - Age of Heroes Chapter 2
Sarvak - The Injustice Gang

The Orca! Give him/her a spiffy black and white costume, and you're set.

I have a rule of thumb for my game & thats been "try not to name a character after there powers."

You can always try naming him after his mission, or his goal, his role, or even his design athestic. Look at a character like Zorro for instance: his name is spanish (i think its spanish) for "The Fox," yet his abilities come from sword play & bolas throwing... Neither are traits a fox is known for.

Naming your character after there powers can be pretty restrictive.
