Thanks. I can at least read stuff and bang out short replies (like this one) via my tablet, but this is a poor solution for anything of length. I should know more by Monday.

It's official, my laptop is not repairable. As a result I am now looking for a replacement. Hopefully I will have one before the end of Jan.

I'm trying to keep a good attitude about it. It was an older machine that I didn't pay a lot for, and let's face it, electronics come and go. Mostly I am focused on trying to recover my data from the HD since that is where the lions share of my RPG PDFs were held (probably a good 10-15 GB worth of native and scanned RPG materials) as well as much of my personal data.

Lesson of the day folks: Back up your data at least once a month, you never know when you might need to do a recovery!

I'm a big advocate of online backups like Dropbox or similar things. Stuff that automatically syncs up whenever I'm connected to the internet.

Can't tell you how many times that's saved my bacon, or just proven really useful.

And, as a side note, it's a good idea to have someone you trust with a list of your passwords just in case something unexpected happens. Not only does it mean your family will be able to get to your email to get bank information and the like, but it also gives you someone who can log onto your computer and get rid of specific hidden folders for things you don't want to come out.

Google Drive certainly did save some of my stuff, as has my practice of having a copy on USB flashdrive for use at work during lunch breaks. Unfortunately a great deal of stuff simply wasn't properly backed up due to space limits and a screw up on my part (It seems that I forgot to re-copy everything after using my largest USB drive at work during a IT mandated computer swap).

The hard disc from my old laptop is apparently readable, now we just need to determine if it escaped with all its data payload intact.

My data was intact and has been retrieved from my old HD! Now all I need is to replace my laptop with something else and life can return to normal for me.

It's good to hear that you were able to retrieve your old data. It would have been a shame to lose all of those rpg PDFs. Now I know why I prefer the paper format sometimes.

Print versus digital is something I have fought with myself for some time. While I prefer print for reading and for use a game table I find digital is attractive because it is cost effective, its resource cost in terms of paper and shipping is lower, and with many products they are purchased to be read but only rarely used at the game table. Ultimately for me I can reconcile a digital purchase more easily for those reasons.
